His room mates are JR Jones, JA Jones, TM Minor and Leo Falkner. It is very cold and there was a weddiong the night before. One of the soldiers married a shop keeper. He notes, "you can guess what kind of woman she is". There was a dance and his post was called out to keep the peace. He is carrying his gun at the event. He notes he has never been to an affair like this... women and soldiers mixing. He also notes that they were promised to be fed but adds, "promises and pie crusts were made to be broken". He writes that he has two ideas for bettering his situation. The men are mentioning his name for promotion to second lieutenant. If that doesn't work out he wants his brother-in-law, Moses Cunningham, to resign as Post Master and recommend Walker to take his place. He mentions that Moses is over 50 and therefore ineligible for soldiering and that Moses can have the work... Walker just wants the title and exemption. He mentions that General Magruder had arrived and they had a grand review. He then claims a New Years gift from Matilda.... 100 pounds of pork and as much lard as she can send.
