Mark ye well her bulwarks. Consider her palaces.” Saturday the 17th day of July was our day of meeting when all the brethren were expected to be present. At 3 o’clock I entered the grounds on which the house stands. The scripture above quoted entered my mind. The place was silent as death. The gaping doors stood open for the worst of locks and stays. The ceiling broken over head. Windows standing askew with the loss of many panes. The yard over grown with sand burs which have not been disturbed for many days. The house off its pillars at north and having been moved by a late storm. Privys badly wrenched by the winds of the past years. These things indicated neglect and disease very plainly. Thus Rogers has been to her people for several years with the exception of her school for five months in the year. The interest taken in her schools compare well with the condition of her schoolhouse and grounds. The last two terms of school closed as failures in the minds of her people. Then for two years she has had no preaching, no Sunday school and no literary school. A waste of money! Why? Echo answering why. But let us note the change of a day. Soon the brethren began to come in. We organized by Bro. Hooks being called to the chair. Bro. Rhodes and Alexander became his able assistants in the work of the meeting. I must speak a word of gentle praise for these two. They have both been indefatigable workers in the interest of our meeting, especially Bro. Rhodes who was charitable enough to transfer his children to another school thereby giving other children a better shore of attention by the teacher. Bro. Bukalew came early a good man and made the first offering at the alter, followed by Bro. Henry Pond another good man and true. Both have the cause much at heart. Then we were glad to see Bros. Reeves and Mints enter who both manifested a great interest in the work. Bro. Mints said he was strictly for it. I believe Bro. Mints’ heart is in the right place. Bro. Gross now put in appearance truly was glad to meet him, a very thorough man in the cause. Then came Bro. Adams who seemed to be much enthused. It promises much when our young men manifest so much zeal. Bro. Collins came in and was with us taking an active part in the work of the meeting. Afternoon Bro. Gregory entered and as usual with the Bro. he was much in the spirit and did his part well. Bro. Handley was received with respect as the oldest one present. What a blessing it is to have the aged with us for counsel and advice. Next we greeted Bro. Gray another young man of promise and a very hard worker in meeting. He did well. Bro. Green though late entered with burden of the work on his heart and proved himself a Brother indeed. Bro. Scott sent word he would be with us and to hold till he came which we did. We were glad to meet Bro. Scott. On the young men depend the progress and security of the nation. On a question of finance there was a ballot taken, resulting in a count of 13 to 2. It is thought this vote would have been unanimous but Bros. Hooks and Handley not seeing very well scratched the wrong part of their ticket. Of the 13 votes eleven are backed by no land in the community. Though they have no land their purse strings are never the less tied in support of this worthy cause. We readily see where they are right. We think from the interest manifested in our meeting that the Brethren will now redeem the past and put the house in good repair.
