All rights reserved http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ****************************************************** The Saint Jo Tribune Saint Jo, Montague County, Texas Friday, March 31, 1939 RAY COOK RAY COOK of Troup and former Saint Jo citizen was killed Friday, March 24 when he fell 96 feet while repairing a derrick on the ALICE RICH lease 8 miles east of Troup. Funeral services were held in the Baptist Church at Troup Saturday morning with Rev. H. W. WARD, Rev. R. C. FLING, and Rev. SELF, all Baptist ministers near Troup, officiating. The body was brought overland to Saint Jo, accompanied by Rev. Fling and the pallbearers, all member of the same drilling crew with Cook: EARLJOHN, J. J. MONK, A. J. BROWN, BASIL UTSMAN, C. V. GALLOWAY, and SAM R. BRIDGES. The second funeral service was held at the Starkey Baptist Church north of Saint Jo on Sunday afternoon. Interment was in the Starkey cemetery, arranged by Scott Bros. The Masonic service was read by C. D. MEADOR. Survivors include his wife, two children CORRINE and “BUDDY,”, his mother MRS. H. L. COOK of Nocona; four sisters MRS. STELLA WEBB of Nocona, MRS. WILLIE BURNS of Custer, Oklahoma, MRS. MARY MCPATRICK of Duncan, oklahoam, RMS. CASSIE SPEER of Ronken; five brothers, MILLER COOK of Duncan, Oklahoma, WILSON, GENE, FRED and Rev. ROY COOK all of Nocona. A.RAY COOK was born in Oklahoma November 22, 1898, son of the late H. L. COOK and MRS. COOK. The Cook family came to Montague County more than 30 years ago and for many years lived just west of Saint Jo. RAY COOK was married to MISS MATTIE DOZIER of this city in 1920. A few years ago, he was employed in the BENTON-HOLMES oil field north of here and about four years ago, moved to Troup where the fatal accident occurred. 300 Visitors Attend Open House More than 300 people attended the open house for Saint Jo’s new city hall and fire hall Friday. Music was furnished by an orchestra under the direction of MRS. W. M. LEDBETTER, musicians were Mr. and Mrs. C. M. QUINN, Mr. and Mrs. C. F. MORGAN, Mr. and Mrs. L. E. MANGEL, MRS. R. E. GREENE, J. S. LAUDERDALE, IVON MCINTYRE, GEORGE D. PEDIGO, and JOHN NOTHALF. JOHN MCCOLLUM, president of the fire department, presided at the guest register. Assorted cookies and iced fruit punch were served by Mesdames LEE MCCOLLUM, FRED HOLLAND, MACK HODGES, T. N. DUNBAR, D. C. BERRY Jr., GEORGE D. PEDIGO, and F. P. SHERRILL. Among the out of town guests were JOHN MCCARTY, fire marshall, FELIX JOHNSON, fire chief, JAMES PATTERSON, JACK WALKER and MISS LOYCE TUDOR of Gainesville; WORTH GRIGSBY and RAYMOND WHALEY of Illinois Bend; ROWLAND BRATCHER, M. K. THRASHER, Mr. and Mrs. RAY BEAL, BAY CROXTON, fire department; E. W PERKINS and R. T. SWEARINGIN of Nocona.
