Horse-Drawn Mail Passes from Scene at Gainesville For the first time since the Gainesville postoffice established free city delivery, there will be no horse-drawn routes Monday. Postmaster GILBERT F. HOLMAN posted an order from the Postmaster Department dispensing with the two horse-drawn carts in favor of one motorized route. One of the carts is driven by T. J. KELLY, carrier on city Route 3, and the other by GEORGE BUGG on Route 4. Bugg will have the new motorized roué and Kelly will have a foot route. KELLY entered the postal service in 1918 as a clerk at Coleman, then transferred to Gainesville the same year. For a year he carried a route by foot, but 15 years ago, given the route of the late JAEMS A. CUNNINGHAM, inheriting his cart. During the 15 year period Kelly used but one horse DAN now 20 years old and the animal has never missed a day except when icy streets made is precarious for him. Substitute carriers had driven Dan when Kelly was off duty. BUGG, who started in service as a substitute 10 years ago, has driven the other cart for six years. W. W. FARR, secretary of Civil Service Commission in Gainesville and clerk in the postoffice, express the belief that the local horsedrawn carts were the last in city mail service in the U. S.
