All rights reserved http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ****************************************************** Saint Jo Tribune Saint Jo, Montague County, Texas Friday, August 4, 1939 Flaming Barn Claims lives of Brothers near Bowie Two small boys were burned to death late Tuesday at their farm house east of Bowie when a corn crib in which they were playing caught fire. The boys, BOBBY BRADFORD, 4, and JAMES RUSSELL BRADFOR, 3, were sons of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. BEDFORD, who live nine miles east of Bowie. Survivors include the parents, eight brothers and sisters. The mother was placed under a doctor’s care. Berry Family Reunion Scenic Lugart Dam Park near Granite, Oklahoma was the site for the second annual Berry reunion held Saturday and Sunday, July 29 and 30. 64 members of the family were present for the reunion compared with 63 last year. The annual get-to-gather was organized two years ago when MRS. S. J. BERRY, mother of the group died at Granite, in order that members of the family might keep in touch with each other. Younger members of the group spent the time swimming, boating, riding and mountain climbing. Still younger members like little NELSON BERRY of Saint Jo kept members of the family busy getting acquainted with him, enjoying the attention. Saint Jo members attending were Mr. and Mrs. D. C. BERRY, W. M. BERRY, MRS. D. C. BERRY Jr., and son NELSON, and MISS BOBBY JEAN MCGRADY. Other relatives came from Chickasha, Okemah, Sayre, Clinton, Brinkman, Duncan, Granite and other points in Oklahoma and Amarillo, Texas. Hildebrand and Pittman Children in Car Accident Monday evening, the children of MRS. JOHN HILDEBRAND and Mr. and Mrs. N. W.PITMAN started out in the Pitman care to hunt rabbits in the Hildebrand pasture near Tyler Bluff on Route 2. Five of the children received injuries, two very seriously when they fell off the outside of the car. VELMA HILDEBRAND and ARLENE PITMAN were injured. WANDA JEAN PITMAN and Velma were taken to the hospital at Gainesville. Mrs. WOODROW JONES and her brother-in-law J. B. JONES received serious injuries in a car collision. Wednesday night. They had started to Ada, Oklahoma to get Mrs. Jones’ husband when the accident occurred near DICK PIERCE’S place on Highway 82. Mrs. Jones was taken to the Gainesville hospital by occupants of a passing car. N No serious injuries were sustained last Friday when the Chevrolet pickup driven by ULIS BURNS, city, collided with another pickup driven by MRS. STARLING EMBRY of Sivell’s Bend on the highway in front of Mr. Burns’ home. In the car with Mrs. Embry were two of her children and a little boy from Oklahoma City, visiting the family. H. H. CARLILE reported that his skating rink would open Saturday night. HORACE WILLIASM of Bowie will be instructor and O. L. PERKINS of Decatur will manage in absence of the owner who will divide his time between his roller rinks in Saint Jo and Henrietta. CORA JANET CLIFT MRS. CORA JANET CLIFT, wife of J.G. CLIFT, died at the home of her daughter MRS. ELMER JOHNS Wednesday night after a short illness. Funeral services were held at the Bulcher church Thursday afternoon by Rev. J. CALVIN DENNIS and SHELBY WEST. Interment was in the Coker cemetery arranged by Scott Bros. Mrs. Clift was born July 22, 1856 in Cape Jersey, Missouri, daughter of CHARLES and ELIZABETH HARRIS. She joined in the Methodist Church in 1873 at the Oakland Church in Hopkins County, Texas. Most of her life was spent in the Bulcher community. She is survived by her husband, J. G. CLIFT, four daughters, MRS. J. H. JONES, MRS. LEE POTEET, MRS. GEORGE PARKHILL and MRS. ELMER JOHNS and one son W. J. CLIFT. Pallbearers were her grandsons. Long Time Resident of Dye Mound Died MRS. MARY SAMPLES died at the home of her daughter MRS. W.B. CASH, five miles west of Saint Jo Saturday morning, July 29 after a long illness. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Dye Mound Church of Christ with Elder JOHN RAYMOND officiating. Pallbearers were N. R. JOHNSON, BILL BOWEN, CLAUDE LOPER, and BARNEY BROGDON, ROY WADE and TROY WADE of Norman, Oklahoma. Interment was in Dye Mound cemetery arranged by Scott Bros. Mrs. Samples was buried beside her husband who passed away May 10, 1939. Mrs. Samples has made her home in the Dye Mound community for over 50 years and has been a member of the Church of Christ all during that time. Survivors are three daughters, MRS. C. A. WADE of Norman, Oklahoma, MRS. SARAH GREENWOOD of Wichita Falls and MRS. CASH, two sons HENRY SAMPLES of Cement, Oklahoma and BUNK SAMPLES of Saint Jo and one brother WILLIE GANN of Marlow, Oklahoma.
