Pleasant Cemetery to commemorate the pioneer families who settled in this area in the 1850's. The Cemetery is located about seven miles northeast of the town of Montgomery on Mt. Pleasant Lake Road which leads on to Farm Road 1097. The road serving this community at this time was the early stagecoach and wagon train route between Huntsville and Montgomery. After 1854 the telegraph lines were strung along the trees beside the road and gave it the name "The Telegraph Road". The land for this cemetery was acquired from O. W. AND Francelia Ferguson, once citizens of this area but at the time of the deed they were living in St. Louis, Missouri. The sum of $30.00 was paid by B. F. Ward, F. M. Rabon, W. M. Addison and A. L. Austin who were the trustees for the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. The deed is dated December 1894. The people buried here are all from the Anglo- American families who came from Alabama, Georgian, Tennessee and Mississippi, most of whom are listed in the 1850 census of Texas and composed a rather large rural farm community, Montgomery being the nearest trade center. The first recorded burials in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery are Clara B. Fridge who died in 1870 and her husband William D. Fridge who died in 1872, gravestone markers have recently been placed on these two graves. There were possible and very probably numerous other burials before and after 1870 of which no record exist. During the 1918 "flu epidemic" seven bodies were brought from Camp Letcher, a logging camp for the Delta Land and Timber Company, located approximately three miles east of the the Mt. Pleasant community. These seven bodies were interred in the southwest corner of the cemetery and no markers were ever placed on any of the graves. These graves are still unidentified. This beautiful cemetery contains the resting place of many distinguished men and women who were leaders in the service of our Lord and their fellow man. There are several veterans of the Civil War as well as veterans of the World Wars. Agnes Elizabeth Taylor, wife of William Stanhope Taylor who was a Texas patriot and veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto rest here. After 1918, friends and relatives of those buried there continued to meet annually and clean the cemetery. About 1928, this group headed by Nellie B. Weisinger and G. B. Long met and organized the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Association, electing a president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer. Since that time it has had annual meetings and made many improvements. Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, which once stood adjacent to the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery was organized about 1862 and was also used as a schoolhouse for the children in the Mt. Pleasant community for awhile. Some pastors of this church who performed baptism's, marriages and officiated at burials were, J. F. Dobbs 1885; C. D. Whitman 1886; C. W. Mathews 1889; Allen Lowery 1898; T. C. Swafford 1912; G. M. Daniel 1917; Bro. High 1819; Matt Welch; Calvin Welch; Elijah Gray; Robert Day; Nelson; and T. H. Feagin. What was left of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church building was torn down after 1940, it is not known what happened to the pews and pump organ that was so much a part of the this church. A Bible was retrieved from the church dated 1865, by Mary Ella Shoverling on one of her visits to the cemetery many years ago. The Bible is now on the podium of Mt. Pleasant Community Chapel, which stands on the site of the old Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. ----------------------------------------------------------- --------------------- This article was reprinted from Montgomery County History- Texas book. copyright © 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 by Jane Keppler.
