M., SR. - There passed away one of Morris county's most prominent citizens, J. M. Connor, Sr., on April 9, 1909. While arranging a water siphon at one of his fish ponds his feet slipped, and he fell on his back, affecting his spinal column, and since that time he remained unconscious, except at very lucid intervals when it is thought he recognized a relative or a friend. Mr. Connor, familiarly known as Uncle Monroe, was born in the State of Tennessee, May 10, 1833. In 1849 he came to Texas with his parents, and has lived in Morris County practically all his life. As a Confederate he served with distinction under Walkers command, and if he loved one friend above another it was one who faced the perils of war at his side in defense of the country he loved and has served so well. He married Miss Emmaline McDowell, who preceded him to the tomb eleven years ago. From this union were 12 children, 7 boys and 5 girls, eight of whom survive him. Buried at Dangerfield, Texas, in the Connor Cemetery. Following are relatives tho lived at a distance - Capt. O. C. Connor and wife of Paris, R. E. Connor of Campbell, Dr. W. E. Connor, W. F. Hull and wife and two children of Cumby, Bill Garrett of Cooksville, Mrs. Chas. Curry, Dr. L. I. Meadro and wife and daughter, Jim Glass, all of Omaha, and J. B. Irwin and wife of Greenville.
