L. Johnson, pastor of the Baptist Church of Daingerfield the past two years, died of heart failure Tuesday morning at 2:35, terminating 28 years of service in the ministry. His death was a distinct shock to his pastorate, many friends and relatives as he only became seriously ill Monday night at 7 o'clock. Rev. Johnston was born in Sabine Parrish, La., February 2, 1877. He and Miss Mattie Maud Harrison were married in 1896. He was ordained to preach in 1908 at Clyde, following which he attended Hardin-Simmons University five years. Rev. Johnston came to Daingerfield from Durant, Okla. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock at the Baptist Church here. Minister taking part in rites were Rev. Roberts of Pittsburg, who had charge, Rev. A. A. Rider, pastor of the Daingerfield Methodist Church, Rev. Porter, pastor of the Baptist Church at Hughes Springs, Rev. J. W. Reeder, pastor of the Cason Baptist Church, Rev. J. F. Bates, pastor of the Baptist Church at Marshall, Rev. R. W. Maples of Pittsburg, Rev. R. C. Miller, Durant, Okla., Rev. Jesse L. Davis, Winfield, and Rev. J. N. Vandiver, pastor of the Baptist Church at Mt. Pleasant. They were honorary pallbearers. The body was transferred to ROyce City where short services were held and burial was made. Pallbearers were Leonard Pratt, J. Y. Thigpen, J. W. Pate, T. N. Jones, W. D. Russell and E. G. Terrell. Surviving Rev. Johnston are his wife and three sons, C. O. Johnston, Daingerfield, T. V. Johnston, Dallas, and M. L. Johnston, Miles; two granddaughters, Virginia Johnston, who lives with her grandmother, and Georgie Lee Johnston of Miles; three brothers, Rev. Claude Johnston, Sherman; T. V. Johnston, Royce City, and J. P. Johnston, Farmersville, who were all present at the funeral. Among out-of-town attendants were Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Trotman, Clyde; Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Harrison, Dallas; Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Vaughan, Durant, Okla.; Mr. and Mrs. Pierson, Durant; Mr. and Mrs. Cleat Self, Durant; Mr. and Mrs. D. G. Coley, Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. D. V. Stephens, Royce City; Leslie Tarter, Greenville. Mrs. Johnston and granddaughter will return to Daingerfield after services at Royce City.
