All rights reserved http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ***************************************************** Mrs. Moore Dies; Was Head of County Schools Death Closes 30-Year Career As Educator June 23, 1940 Funeral services for Mrs. Roy Moore, superintendent of Morris County Schools, were held Monday afternoon at the Church of Christ. Mrs. Moore died Sunday morning at 6 o'clock at her home, after an illness of about six weeks. Born Martha Zula Stokes on September 22, 1890, at Maud, Mrs. Moore began in early life her career as an educator. She started teaching school at the age of 16, and taught for 25 years throughout Bowie and Morris Counties before becoming county superintendent five years ago. She recieved her education at Gunter Bible College, ETSTC, Commerce, and the University of Texas. Mrs. Moore was the daughter of Joseph J Stokes and Grace McCloskey Stokes. On June 4, 1917, she was married to Roy Moore at Cason. They were the parents of two children, Roy Jr., and Marion. Mrs. Moore united with the Church of Christ in 1905. Conducting funeral services was W. S. Wiley, minister of the Church of Christ at Mt. Pleasant. He was assisted by Rev. J. O. Jolly, local Baptist minister. "The Old Rugged Cross", "As the Life of a Flower", and "In The Garden" were sung during the services. Active pallbearers were nephews of Mrs. Moore, Noble Hart Moore, Donald Moore, James McMichael, Thomas McMichael, Lofton Merrill, Stokes Merrill, Billy Joe McMichael, and Thomas Vivian Cramer. Honorary pallbearers were Ted Spencer, George E French, Mike Gilbert, Malcolm McNatt, Boyet Stevens, and John Mason Mings. Flower girls were Mary Jo Thigpen, Anne Irvin, Maurine Old, LaVonne Dalby, Emma Sue Hooton, Beth Miller, Mary Frances Parrish, and Edsel Pratt. Surviving Mrs. Moore are her husband, and daughter; her mother Mrs. Grace Stokes of Cason; five sisters, Mrs. V. F. Cramer of Daingerfield, Mrs. N. E. Merrill of Texarkana, Mrs. Bill Goode of Washington, D. C., Mrs. Phil Dodson of Washington, D. C., Mrs. J. Y. McMichael of Cason; and one brother L. D.Stokes of Fort Worth. Among those from out of the county who attended the funeral were the following: Mr. & Mrs. James McMichael, Thomas COllin McMichael, and Lofton Merrill of Austin; Mr. & Mrs. L. D. Stokes of Fort Worth; Mrs. and Mrs. N. E. Merrill and son, Stokes, Mrs. Clyde Curry and daughter, Joyce, and Mrs. Whatley of Texarkana; Mrs. Dixie McCloskey, Mrs. Walter Heffner and daughters, Maye, Faye, and Raye, Edgar McCloskey, Lewis McCloskey, Marvin McCloskey and son and daughter, Glen and Virginia, of Redwater. Mrs. J. E. Ashford and Miss Willie Nell Shelton of Maud; Miss Christine Smith of Denton; Byron Reeves of Mt. Pleasant; Charlie Wimble of Shreveport, La; Mr. & Mrs. W. C. Moore and daughter, Sally, and Miss Christine Wilson of Hughes Springs; Mrs. Cecil Ross of Jefferson; Malcolm McNatt of Dallas. John M. Mings of Big Sandy; Mrs. Charlie Powell and daughter, Lessie, of Avinger; Rev. A. A. Rider and Miss Helen Rider of Linden.
