Nacogdoches Co., TX - Pine Grove Cemetery **************************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/tx/txfiles.htm ***************************************************** PINE GROVE CEMETERY (Caucasian), Nacogdoches County, Texas, is one of two cemeteries in the county with this name. Since the other Pine Grove Cemetery has been identified as "African-American", I've identified this cemetery as "Caucasian" to differentiate the two. The sameness of the names is coincidental; this cemetery is located north of Nacogdoches off SR204; the other is located off SR7 south of the city. A future transcription will cover the other Pine Grove Cemetery. DIRECTIONS: Take US259 north from Nacogdoches and turn left on SR204 (road to Cushing); go about 3.5 miles and turn left on CR836. Go 2.5 miles and turn right on CR857. When this road turns right, continue on straight to the cemetery. There is a sign at this turn. This cemetery suffered extensive damage from Hurricane IKE, and local residents were in the cemetery clearing out the remaining downed trees the day I was there. (FEMA helped by hauling out 28 trailer loads of debris during cleanup efforts in 2008) Across the creek from the cemetery is the site of the Pine Grove Methodist Episcopal Church. A granite memorial at the site has the following inscription: "Site of Pine Grove Methodist Episcopal Church South Built in 1894 Destroyed by fire 1921. Pastors: William R. Carnes, Marion Donegan, George Henderson, James N. Lewelling, Henry T. Pitman" There are perhaps as many as 4 dozen "unknowns", many marked with natural stones. In a back area of the cemetery is a flat marble marker with the inscription "Daughter of Traveling Furniture Peddlers". BATES, W.B.; b. July 25, 1856; d. Aug 27, 1922.
