Gloria B. Mayfield, LadyTexian@tcainternet.com  TX Tombstone Project Manager Submitted by Carl W. Matthews ************************************************************************ Spring Hill Cemetery ,Dawson, Navarro County, Texas 2 miles northeast of Dawson off State Highway 31. Contact: Carl W. Matthews, P.O. Box 454, Roswell, GA 30077 The Spring Hill Cemetery is on land that was the homeplace of Dr. Washington Hill and his wife Katherine (Matthews) Slaughter Hill. Dr. Hill was one of President Sam Houston’s cabinet members, a wealthy landowner, trader, physician, statesman. Hill County was named in his honor. Dr. and Mrs. Hill are both buried in the Spring Hill Cemetery with many descendants. In 1936 the State of Texas erected a State Centennial monument at their graves. Whilst the cemetery had its start as the private burying place for Hill family members Dr. Hill stipulated in his 1860 Will that 2 acres of land surrounding his family grave yard was to be a “perpetual burying place” and thus the present Spring Hill Cemetery was established. In the early days a public road went by the North side of the cemetery, but at some point this road was closed leaving the cemetery land-locked in a pasture, about 1/4 mile from the nearest access road. Very few burials have taken place their in recent years. In 1970 the Spring Hill Cemetery Association was organized, donations collected, and a chain link fence installed to keep out the grazing cattle that over the years destroyed many of the grave markers. The address for the Spring Hill Cemetery Association is P.O. Box 90, Dawson, TX 76639. Ammonette, Emilie Born: Nov 17, 1837 Died: Sep 4, 1882. Wife of William Ammonette. (African American) Younger, Caroline Born: 1834 Died: Jun 17, 1919. Died at age 85. Wife of Robert A. Younger who died in the Civil War and daugher of Minerva Catherine Matthews Slaughter. The people who took the Spring Hill Cemetery census in the 1940’s read the information on the Younger children’s markers as Daughter Son of Isom and Catherine. That information had completely disappeared by 1997. Could it be that it was Caroline instead of Catherine who was the wife of Isom? One daughter that was born in 1869 was named Caroline also, and was buried near the grave of her father. Alfred Martin, a walking encyclopedia of black history of western Navarro County, remembered that a Matthews lady gave permission for blacks to be buried at the cemetery. Isom and Catherine were in all likelihood slaves in the Younger family and adopted their surname as their own. Younger, Elizabeth Born: Dec 25, 1884 Died: Sep 25, 1910. Wife of Jessie Younger. They have two children buried in the Spring Hill Cemetery and had another daughter Medora who married Alonzo McSpadden. Younger, Mary Born: 1862 Died: 1864. Mary Younger was the first slave of record to have been buried at Spring Hill Cemetery.
