I received your most welcome letter was glad to hear you were well we are not well sister. I thank you for your kind invitation to be presnt at Brother Birthday dinner sorry that I will not be able to come as I have had long spell of gripe just able to be up now we all was sick the rest all got on very well and all right it seems that I can't get well. I was taken down the for [four] of January. I received your letter while I was so sick so you will not think hard of me for not writing There has been a great deal of sickness in this county with gripp. Dans family was all sick too at the time I was. Well, I have not herd from our sisters in three months. Mrs. Jackson ? family are well her children are all in school but the two least ones. Well sister I think we have had a very severe winter the wort in a long time we hae planted some garden hope we will have some warm weather now. I had a letter from Mary. She said they were all well. She is some better now than last year. I made a visit to Bellville in July last found a great many of our knfolks all was well except Ben's little boy he had fever he is well now. That old country looks very old I can't see how those people live there on those sand hills. I had a nice time. Mary went with me She is in school at Moody she is as tall as I am now 13 years old. Sister shy can't you all come to see us this summer. If you will we can go all over the county to see all of our kin. I still have old John got? and a good Buggy so come. I can't come untill warm weather. How is Sam's family How is Fannie getting along? How many children has she now I heard that she lost her oldest boy. How is Nellie how many children has she? I would like to see you all very much but can't tell when I can get off. Ira has two little boys now he has not named the last one the oldest is about 22 months the little one is about 5 months old now. Tell the children Aunt Mary wants to see them very bad. Tell Brother he might come any time. I know it is hard for a woman to get off with little children. Well I will close. hope you are all well write soon to your loving sister, Mary Jones NOTE: Mary L. "Little Mary" - Dan's daughter, Mary's granddaughter was born Dec 26, 1885 so this letter was probably written 1899? Dan, Mary's husband died in 1890, as well as their son, Wiley. Ira's boys: Daniel Wiley, son of I.T. & H.B. Jones May 16, 1897 John Fred, son of I.T. & H.B. Jones Oct 1, 1898 FM & Lydia had sons Earl[1885] and Carl[1889] ================================= Moody Tex August 30 [1889] Dear Brother and sister, I received your kind letter also the picture of little Earl. I am ever so thankful it is just like him so nice and sweet I wish I could see the little one. Brother, I am glad you thought enough of me to write me of Mother's death which was sad to all of us, but I hope all the children will all feel resigned to the will of the lord he does all things for our good if we could see it. How is Pa and who will care for him. I know any of them would if he would let them. Well, Mary Young has come back home her health is no better. Wiley is sick. Dr. Young and family have moved to Moody. Dan is there two [too]. Wiley is selling drugs at Moody. We have a fine meeting going on here. It is very dry here no rain since June. Old corn selling for ten cents that is very little for corn. Cotton picken going on very rapid cotton selling for ten cents The dog is Wiley he does not care for him keep him I would have been to see you all but Mr. Jones shoulder hurts him so bad he can't be up much of the time we will come when Mr. (rest missing) ============================= May 31, 1910 (postmark) Moody May 29 [1910] Dear Sister Lydia & family I will answer your nice letter was glad to hear from you and to know that you all are well. We are well. Dan's family are well. Sister Minan family are well. Charles Day was married about a month ago. He married a Galveston girl he has been living in Galveston for a long time They was here yesterday she is a nice sweet little woman. I had a letter from Hattie yesterday They are well will be up to see us in a few weeks to spend the summer I sure will be glad to see them again. I can't visit any until they go home. I think the kinfolk are all well. Sister Bettie has gone to see Johnnie then she will go to see Sollie in Baltimore. She spent several months out with Brother Sam this spring. They are well all but Lulia Sister Annie family are well. Wish you could come to see us I will try to come to see you all when the weather gets cool if I can How is your chicken getting along. Sister Mina has about five hudnred a fine garden will have plenty of vegetable of all kinds Tell the children old John is still living he is 26 year old and fat. Dr. Jordan's family are all well so is Mary Young's I have not heard from Ellen since you wrote me about her. Did you have any hail last week when it was raining so much it did great damage in some places. How is Brother health now Whene did you hear from sister Ellen How is Ruth getting along now and all the rest of the kinfolk. The farmers are busy cotton geam? now grain crop look fine since the rain. Hattie' father lost his house and everything think it was struck by ligthning they was in the sorm house and di not save anything at all it being night it was lucky that they were in cellar. How many sheep have you all? Hoping to hear from you soon. Will close with love to all write soon. lovingly Sister Mary NOTES: Charles Day born Nov 19, 1888. Iradell youngest son married Hattie Porterfield. By 1910 they had 5 children Bettie - married George Acree. Daughter Johnnie married H.F. Graham, from Torque England, not sure if she was in England in 1910. Sol was a chemistry professor in John Hopkins University. Brother Sam moved to Pasadena California after retiring. ===================== Moody May 26 [1914] [to niece Imogene Grimes] My Dear Neice will write you a few lines was glad to get your card and to hear that Brother is better it was so nice of you to think of auntie in that way it does me good to hear that he is improving hope he will soon be able to come to see me can he use his leg at all can he talk any better hope I will be able to come to see him my oldest son said when the weather got good we would run up in his car and spend a few days with you all we would enjoy it now my dear girl I am so glad you have got so far on an education will send you a little present not much but in remembrance of your graduation day. How is all the rest of the family. How is Fred he is such a fine young man give him mylove and my sweet boy Ellis what is he doing now. Tell hm Auntie thinks of him every day he is so good Give my love to Mama & Papa tell them I hope they will come to see me soon if they can't you and the boys can come let me hear from you all soon with love Aunt Mary Jones. NOTE: F.M. had a stroke in April just before Imogene's graduation from Frost High School 1914. Jan 8 ? [1926-1929?] Lydia, my dear Sister, will try to write you a few lines to let you know that we are doing well, hope that same for your children all. There is a big snow on the ground this morning. Guess it with you too. How is your chickens doing this weather Do you have someone in the home with you sister. I have a side saddle that your little granddaughter can have if they need it to ride to school if they need it when any of you comd down you take it....no use to me now. Have you heard of Dr. Young's accident. It was an awful thing. It brought sorrow to many hearts all over the country. So many loved them both is very sad Well, sister, how are all your children, mine are well sas far as I know. Sister, I want to thank you for the nice handkerchief you sent me. Itis nice and lovely.
