Ltr written to Lydia Hightower Grimes from her friend, Martha Way (I've seen her
referred to as Mattie Way)  Lydia (1860-1943) would have been 14 years old.  

July 15, 1874
Dresden, Navarro County

Dear Liddia,

My dear friend,
I take my pen in hand to drop you a few lines to let you know that I am well and
hope that you are too. My dear, I hope that you will excuse bad writing and also
bad spelling as I have never written a letter before this one.

My dear I hope that you are a sweet girl . I know that you are a pretty one and
a smart one too. My dear Liddia I hope that you will come to see me as soon as
you can. I have tried to take time to write you a few lines. I have to get my
supper ready now so I will have to end it  no not quite done yet.  I recon that
you heard the Missrs  Sanders has got a big boy. She is very sick I have not
seen it yet but I can't tell when I will go to see it.

I do wish that you were here to go to school with me. I would be so glad to see
you now at school learning fast a good scholar. I am going to school at Bethel
Academy and Mr. Burton he is a good teacher. I am learning very fast.

So goodby for this time. Write as soon as you can.
