Its officers were Captain David T. Stafford, present commander, and First Lieutenant Dan D. Tompkins. The troop's original strength was 65 enlisted men, with an additional 43 on the waiting list. Captain Stafford enlisted in Troop C, First Texas Cavalry, in 1916 and served in that organization, Battery A, 132nd Field Artillery, and in the Air Service during the World War, receiving his commission in the last named in 1918. Enlisting in Troop C, 112th Cavalry, in 1923 as a first sergeant, he was soon commissioned First Lieutenant. In January, 1928, he was made Captain and continued in command until he moved to Corpus Christi in 1937. Lieutenant Tompkins received military training at Texas A. and M. and Oklahoma University. He was a First Lieutenant in the Cavalry Reserve until he resigned to accept his present commission. Second Lieutenant Glover S. Johns, Jr., was commissioned October 10, 1939. He is a graduate of Virginia Military Institute, former instructor at Peacock Military Academy and a former reserve officer. Composed of young business and professional men of Corpus Christi, the men of the troop average between 27 and 28 years of age. Statistics show that about 50 per cent have had previous military training, and that over 80 per cent are college graduates. Many of them have served in the Regular Army or National Guard, or had college R. O. T. C. training. Some of them formerly held reserve commissions. The troop has a 21-acre tract, a mile and a half beyond the city limits, under a long-term lease, and intends to make it one of the show places of Nueces County. COMMISSIONED OFFICERS David T.
