He was born in Corpus Christi, TX, Dec. 1, 1936 to Mamie Dee and Irving B. Ault (deceased) and was one of their six children. Bob attended Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, earned an undergraduate degree in Art from the University of Texas and an MFA degree from Wichita State University where he did an internship at the Institute of Logopedics and discovered the therapeutic use of the art process. He married Marilynn L. Miller in 1960 and they moved temporarily to Topeka where they lived the remainder of his life. Bob initiated the Art Therapy Masters program at Emporia State University, KS. Bob was on staff at the Menninger Foundation in Topeka for 32 years before leaving to run his Aults Academy of Art. Bob worked at the Academy providing individual therapy as well as classes in fine art, and continued painting until his final illness. He was the second President of the American Art Therapy Association, 1971-1973 and was awarded the organizations Honorary Life Membership. He taught and presented workshops nationally and internationally and was a mentor to many artists and art therapists. Bob authored the book Drawing on the Contours of the Mind and a chapter was devoted to him in the book Architects of Art Therapy. He is survived by his wife Marilynn Ault, his son Dana Ault-Riche, and Danas wife Diana Ault-Riche of San Francisco, CA, his daughter Keri Ault and Keri's husband Jeff Jackson of Portland, Or and 4 grandchildren; Gabrielle Ault-Riche, JeanMarc, Ault-Riche, Landon Jackson and Fisher Jackson, his 99 year old mother Mamie Dee Ault of Corpus Christi, TX, his brothers Jim Ault and Jims wife Margaret of Little Rock, AR, and Bill Ault and Bills wife Ann of San Antonio, TX. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service is scheduled for Feb. 24 at 3:00 p.m., at the Bradbury Thompson Alumni Center, Washburn University.
