Andy SLADE, SR. born 1797 per tombstone, born ca 1815 in NC per census records, died Feb. 27, 1883, buried in Mt Zion CME Church Cemetery, off FM 123, east of Carthage, Panola Co TX. He married Emerline, spelling on his tombstone, or Emiline, spelling in census records that show her as being born ca 1824 in NC. No record of her place of burial. Although the 1870 Census of Panola County does not have a single entry under the surname of Slade, it is possible that this family was missed by the census taker. However, it does not seem that they had been in Panola County much earlier than that date. Known Children: a. Andy Slade, Jr., born March 9, 1844, died Apr 30, 1908, buried in Mt Zion CME Church Cemetery, according to census records he married Selina (?), although no record of this marriage found in Panola County. b. Caroline Slade, nothing known of her other than in Panola County she married William Burl on Jan 16, 1868 (Vol C, p 434). However, William and Caroline do not appear on either the 1870 or the 1900 censuses for Panola County. c. Richard “Dick” Slade, per census records was born ca 1849 d. Mary Ann Slade, born Oct 2, 1853 in LA, died Feb 28, 1921. She first married William Holloway on Jan 29, 1872 in Panola Co TX (Vol C, p 292). She second married George Bean on Feb 4, 1873 in Panola Co TX (Vol C, page 267). She is buried beside George Bean in Mt Zion CME Church Cemetery, Panola Co TX. George was born Mar 8, 1852 and died Mar 9, 1929. e. Sarah Slade was born ca 1856 in LA according to census records. She does not appear in the Panola County marriage records, nor is she on the 1900 Census, so it is possible that she died some time prior to that date, or possibly she remained behind in LA when the family moved to TX. However, given the number of surviving children Emerline said she had on the 1900 Census, Sarah probably had died before that time. f. Dawson “Doss” Slade was born ca Feb 1854 in LA according to the 1900 Census. On Jun 15, 1896 in Panola Co TX he married Mrs. Mollie Thompson. According to the 1900 Census she was born ca Aug 1866 in LA and that both her father and mother had also been born in LA. That census shows that Doss and Mollie had been married for three years, that she had given birth to 15 children, with only six surviving. g. Morris Slade was born ca 1860, per census records. He is not shown on the 1900 Census, so it is possible that he died prior to that time. h. Scott Slade was born ca Dec. 1862 in LA according to the 1900 Census. Panola Co TX marriage records show Scott as marrying Minda Beck on Sep 27, 1883 (Vol D, page 733) and Manda Beck on Feb 7, 1884 (Vol D, page 713). It is unknown if these were two different ladies, or if there was a duplicate record entry. The 1900 Census shows his wife’s name as Minda, that she was born ca Aug 1866 in TX, her father was born in GA and her mother was born in TX. That census shows that Scott and Minda had been married for 16 years at that time and that Minda had given birth to 11 children, with six surviving. Scott later married Pearl Crawford on Nov 24, 1912 (Vol I, page 530). i. Lincoln C. Slade was born Apr 16, 1866, (in TX according to the 1900 Census) and died Jun 16, 1918, buried at Mt Zion CME Church Cemetery. He married Ella Burns on May 21, 1884 in Panola Co TX (Vol D, page 706) Although his wife’s name is “Ella” on the marriage record, both the 1900 Census and her tombstone show her name to be “Ellen” According to the 1900 Census, Ellen was born ca Jan 1867 in TX, that her father was born in TN and her mother was born in LA. At the time of that census, she reported that she had been married for 15 years, that nine children had been born to her and all nine were surviving. In fact, on the 1900 Census, all nine children were living in the household with Lincoln and Ellen. j. Unknown Male Slade – He died some time prior to the 1900 Census as he was not enumerated on it and his mother stated that three of her children were deceased. SECOND GENERATION: II – 1 Andy Slade, Jr. who according to census records was born ca March 1843 in LA. According to census records he was married to Selina, born ca 1848 in LA. Their marriage was not recorded in Panola Co TX. KNOWN CHILDREN: a. Ellen Slade, according to census records was born ca 1869 in TX. On Jan 12, 1886 in Panola Co TX she1st married Ed Willis (Vol D, page 668), then later on Jan 12, 1897 she 2nd married she married I.F. Woodard (Vol F, page 281) According to census records she married Isaac Woodard ca 1897, he being born in Aug 1858 in LA. In Mt Zion CME Church Cemetery there is a marked grave for “Mrs. Ella Woodard” with no birth date given, but a death date of Nov 12, 1957 on the metal marker provided by Black’s Funeral Home of Carthage. On the 1900 Census her name is shown as “Ella”. It reported that she and Isack Woodard had been married for three years and that no children had been born of the marriage. II – 2 Richard “Dick” Slade, Sr. was born ca 1849 and died before 1900 according to census records. He married Louisa (?) who was born ca 1848 in LA. Their marriage was not recorded in Panola Co TX. He died some time before the 1900 Census was taken, as on that census, Louisa is shown as being a widow. She lived in a house between her mother-in-law Emeline Slade and her brother- in-law Lincoln Slade. KNOWN CHILDREN: (Taken from census records) a. Wilborn S. Slade, who was born ca 1863 in TX. On Jan 26, 1896 in Panola County, he married Eliza Davis (Vol F, p 179) b. Roxana Slade, who was born ca 1869 in TX. In Panola County she 1st married Hamp Harris on Jan 4, 1904 ( Vol H, p 7) and 2nd married Monroe Brown on Jan 1, 1908 (Vol H, p 493). c. Richard Slade, Jr. who was born ca 1873 in TX. He either moved away from Panola County, or died before the 1900 Census as he does not appear on it. Neither does he appear in the marriage records of Panola County. d. Malissa Slade, who was born ca 1878 in TX. She married William Smith on Mar 28, 1901 in Panola County (Vol G, p 148). e. Joel Slade, who was born ca Aug 1886 in TX. In Panola County he married Zilla Brown on Dec 30, 1904 (Vol H, p 140) f. Louie Slade, who was born ca Sep 1887 in TX. On the census this individual is shown as being a female. It is most probable that this name should have been Lucy. Lucy Slade was the second wife of Richard Tilman Walton ( the son of Frank Walton) and there is no other Lucy to be found in the Slade families. Lucy Slade married R.T. Walton on Oct 27, 1911 (Vol I, p 446). R.T. Walton was born Feb 20, 1857 in TX, died Pat 27, 1939 and is buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery. Lucy’s date of death and place of burial are unknown. II – 3 Mary Ann Slade who first married William Holloway on Jan 29, 1872, then second married George Bean on Feb 4, 1873. KNOWN CHILDREN: (Per census records) a. Morris Bean, according to his tombstone was born Apr 15, 1874, died Mar 21, 1929. He is buried with other members of his family in Mt Zion CME Church Cemetery, Panola Co TX. Per the 1900 Census he married Sarah (?) who was born ca 1889 in LA. At the time of that census, Morris and Sarah had been married for one year and had no children born of the marriage as of that date. They lived next door to Morris’ parents George and Mary Ann Bean. Their marriage was not recorded in Panola Co TX. There is no marker at Mt. Zion Cemetery for Sarah (?) Bean. If Morris died before her, there is no subsequent marriage in the Panola County records for her. It might be assumed that she is also buried at Mt. Zion. b. Elizabeth Bean who, according to her tombstone, was born Feb 7, 1876, died M—25, 1896 and is buried in Mt Zion CME Church Cemetery, Panola Co TX. Also according to her tombstone, she was the wife of Forney Jacobs. (Per the 1900 Census Forney was born ca March 1874 in LA, and both his mother and father were born in LA.) However, the only marriage recorded in Panola Co TX for Forney Jacobs was when he married Silvie Jones on Jan 10, 1898. The 1900 Census shows Forney and Silvie (born ca Mar 1873 in TX, both parents born in VA) as having one child born of their marriage, Wesley, who was one month old when the census was tallied. There are no other children in the household, so it might be assumed that Elizabeth and Forney had no children, or at least no surviving children. c. Walter Bean, was born ca 1877 in TX. Although Walter does not appear on the 1900 Census of Panola County, his marriage to Eddie Burns was recorded there as having taken place on May 14, 1908 (Vol H, p 523). d. Amus (Amos) Bean was born ca 1879 in TX. Although Amos does not appear on the 1900 Census of Panola County, his marriage to Hattie Cooper was recorded there as having taken place on May 14, 1908 (Vol G, p 161). e. Addie Lou Bean, according to her tombstone was born Sep 18, 1883 and died May 24, 1947. She is buried in Mt Zion CME Church Cemetery. Panola Co marriage records show that she married Jesse Adams on Jan 3, 1901 (Vol G, page 94). However, her maiden name is on her tombstone. f. Arbella Bean who was born ca Feb 1885 in TX This individual is quite possibly the same as the Ella Bean Byrd that had a marked grave in Mt. Zion Cemetery. According to Ella’s tombstone she was born Nov. 11, 1884 and died in 1948. Arabella is the only individual that would fit the information for Ella Bean. There is no marriage record in Panola County for Ella marrying a Mr. Byrd. g. Mahala Bean who was born March 8, 1892, died August 15, 1968 and is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery on CR 426. According to Panola Co TX marriage records she married Jasper Thomas on Jan 18, 1912 (Vol I, p 382). h. George Bean, Jr., according to his tombstone was born April 1, 1889 and died May 21, 1919. He is buried in Mt. Zion CME Church Cemetery, Panola Co TX. No marriage record is found for him in Panola County. NOTE: On the index of Panola County marriages from 1845 – 1912, there in one Bean name that cannot be accounted for. Sinah Bean married John T. Davenport on Nov 3, 1873 (Vol D, p 15). As this was the same year that George Bean married Mary Ann Slade, it might be assumed that Sinah was a sister to George. Neither George nor Sinah Bean appear on the 1870 Census. However, there was one Bean family enumerated. Benjamin Bean, age 57 born in NC, Martha Bean, age 37 born in TN, Nancy Bean, age 12 born in TX and Mumford Bean, age 9 born in TX. Benjamin was probably not the father of George, as George told the census taker in 1900 that his father was born in AL and his mother in SC. If Benjamin was not the father of George and Sinah, it is quite probable that he was some kin to them and they may have come to TX to join his household. II – 4 Dawson “Doss” Slade, according to census records was born ca 1858 in LA. Panola Co TX marriage records show that on Jun 15, 1896 he married Mrs. Mollie Knott Thompson (Vol F, page 213). The census records show her as having been born ca March 1864 in LA. Per Panola County marriage records, Robertson Thompson married Mollie Knott on Aug 3, 1884 (Vol D, p 704). KNOWN CHILDREN: (Per census records) a. Mary E. Slade, who was born ca Oct 1896 in TX b. Samuel Slade, who was born ca June 1898 in TX c. Simmel Slade who was born ca Feb 1900 in TX Mollie’s children of her first marriage were a. Sylvester Thompson, b ca Dec 1886 b. Polly Thompson, b ca Feb 1891 II – 5 Scott Slade, according to census records he was born ca 1862 in LA. The marriage records of Panola Co TX show three entries for Scott (1) Minda Beck on Sep 27, 1883 (Vol D, page 733), (2) Manda Beck on Feb 7, 1884 (Vol D, page 713) and Pearl Crawford on Nov. 24, 1912 (Vol I, page 530). It is unknown if the first two entries are duplications of a record, or if it was two separate records. KNOWN CHILDREN: (Per census records) a. Roxie Slade, who was born ca Dec 1884 in TX. Per Panola Co TX marriage records, she 1st married Hamp Harris on Jan 4, 1904 (Vol H, page 7) and then 2nd married Monroe Brown on Jan 1, 1908 (Vol H, page 493). Per census records, Monroe was the son of Shedrac Brown. b. Mark Slade, who was born ca Dec 1886 in TX. This is possibly the same person who is shown as Mack Slade in the Panola Co TX marriage records who married Ida Smith on Dec 24, 1906 (Vol H, page 381). c. Rubania (or Rubana Slade) who was born ca Aug 1889 in TX. On Jan 20, 1912 in Panola Co TX she married Sandy Walton (Vol I, page 395) d. Scott Slade, Jr. who was born ca April 1892 in TX e. This is possibly the Elias Slade who is shown in the Panola County marriage records as having married Zedena Walton on Dec. 15, 1910 (Vol I, p 266) e. Isaac Slade who was born ca Feb 1892 in TX f. Ethel Slade, who was born ca April 1893 in TX g. Red Slade, who was born Ma 1894 in TX h. Andy Slade who was boron ca March 1895 in TX i. No marriage record for her in Panola County. On the 1900 Census she is shown to be living in the household with her grandmother, Emerline Slade. She is noted as being married, had been married for one year and no children had been born of the marriage at that time. NOTE: Per Arrilla Brown Willie – The father of Richard Tilman Walton was Frank Walton. No census record found for Frank Walton. On the 1900 Census of Panola County, Isam Walton, Sr. was living next door to Richard Tilman Walton (Isam’s son) and his wife Arrilla Trial. Isam is showing as having been born ca March 1835 in AL, with born his parents born in GA. His wife Sarah was born ca Nov 1876 in TX, her father was born in GA and her mother in TX. The census shows that Isam (age 65) and Sarah (age 23) had been married for three years and that Sarah had given birth to one child and that child was living. The only child shown in the household is John Etta Palmer born ca Feb 1894 and she is designated as being the stepdaughter of Isam Walton. At this time it is unknown if the father of John Etta Palmer is a relative of Richard Palmer, the father of Ernest Palmer who is buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery as was R.T. and Arrilla Trial Walton Per Panola County marriage records, Isham Walton 1st married Emma Thomas on Feb 7, 1897 (Vol F, p 289) and 2nd married Sarah Palmer on May 30, 1898 (Vol F, p 415).
