PANOLA COUNTY -Medical Records of Dr. Thomas J. Reagan by Leila B. LaGrone Carthage, Texas Thomas Jefferson Reagan was born in 1828, to James and Nancy Reagan, in Elbert County, Georgia. He was the eleventh child and the youngest. Graduating from Georgia Medical College, at Augusta Georgia, he came to Panola County in the early 1850's. Arriving in the Beckville area_soon afterward, he married Mrs. Rebecca Delona (Stanton) Neely, on June 7, 1857. One of eight children, she was the daughter of William and Nancy Stanton, born in 1829 in Hancock County Georgia. She came to Texas with her young husband, Jim Neely. She and Jim Neely settled near Beckville on land which Neely had purchased, but he died suddenly and left her a young widow. Rebecca and Dr. Reagan had three children: Mary Elizabeth (Reagan) Jordan; Julia Neely (Reagan) Whitfield; and Thomas Frederick, who died in infancy. Rebecca often went with her husband on his calls, and they had a special carriage in which they made annual journies to visit relatives. Dr. Reagan built a small office building outside his home. It was equipped with a fireplace, a desk, a divan or day-bed, and medicines. In this century, with the coming of automobiles, this building was converted into a garage. Dr. and Mrs. Reagan were important citizens for their day. He died in 1887 and she lived until 1916. They were progenators of Beckville families who established business and community leadership. The doctor's journals and business ledgers, as well as many pictures, came to the "LaGrone Family History Center" in the Old Panola County Jail, through the generosity of the Larry Dorman Family. A wealth of information in there that will benefit generations to come. Because of the value for genealogists, the birth and death records need to be printed in available literature. I have spent many hours compiling the l1st. These began in the 1860's and extended until his death in 1887. This was before the law required this information to be reg1stered. Dr. Reagan became a wealthy man; but he accepted about anything of value as payment for his services, including: day labor on his farm, cotton, corn, cows, horses, bacon, hams, etc., splitting rails, building fences, riving boards, haul- ing various supplies, field crops, and about anything else, including land. The first Journal preserved from Dr. Reagan's records, began in 1864 when he was in the Confederate Ordinance Department, stationed in Minden, Louisana. He was in charge of issuing forage for the animals used by the Army: Horses, mules, oxen, etc. His records l1st many Civil War Veterans. Medical records overlap the Ordinance Records. His fees for the individual cases were not the same. No explanation helps one understand why his fee for child birth might be anywhere from $2.00 to $10.00; even in one case, $20.00. Four of these Medical Journals were preserved, the last one very brief; his death came that year. The l1st below comes from Journal I: JOURNAL I, 1864-1877 BIGGS, Joseph E., birth of female ….
