DR. JOHN C. LINDSEY, DEC’SD, PROBATE RECORDS, PANOLA CO., TX Submitted by Geraldine Lewellen Graves Route 1, Box 201-E Gary, Texas 75643 The interesting Probate Records and the administration of the Estate of Dr. John C. Lindsey were uncovered by Jerri Graves, who shares them with the members of ETGS. Jerri sent photocopies of the original courthouse records. According to research by Jerri Graves, Dr. Lindsey is shown on the 1860 Panola County Federal Census in Household 572 with his family. The record shows he was born in Alabama about 1822, age 38, occupation, physician, with a value of $4300. Shown with him are his wife, Jane, 33, born Arkansas, and children, Abijah, 17; Joseph, 13; Elizabeth, 11; Hannah, 9; Caleb, 6; and Mary, 2. All of the children are born in Texas with the exception of Abijah, who is listed as born in Arkansas, as was Caleb. Close neighbors of Dr. Lindsey and his family were the families of Denson Belk, Abijah Petton, James K. Witherspoon, George Nail, and the Harrison Davis family. The inventory of Dr. Lindsey was tremendous and included his medical supplies in the Estate. Medical service calls are listed, and a goodly number of Panola County citizens of that time, just before the Civil War, are given. The in- ventory was given in two sections: first, the list of property and effects, including medicines; and then, a list of the accounts payable for medical service rendered. Listed medical accounts include patients for a two-year span - 1859-1860. According to the court records, Dr. John C. Lindsey ,departed this life in said county about the 13th day of December, 1860, intestate, leaving in said county, personal and real estate to a large amount . . . " Dr. Lindsey lived in a era when doctors rode horseback in all kinds of weather to attend his patients. He accepted goods for services and often received meat, produce, and labor in lieu of money. More than likely he never turned anyone down, whether or not they had money. If they needed something done for them, Dr. Lindsey treated them as best he could. Listed are medical accounts for 1859-1860: J. W. Britton $ 30.00 Busby (Applegate?) $24.40 Capt.
