Burns – Bill of Sale – One Slave - $950.00 Virgil, about 26 years of age, black Vol C – p 114 : Signed 12-04-1851 Lineas Cock, dec’d to Martin Talley – Bill of Sale – One Slave Nelson, about 37 years of age – Purchase Price: $850.00 Vol C – p 465: Signed 12-03-1852 Richard Golden, Mace Golden and Thomas Gulley to A.M. Hill and T.M. Hill, executors of the estate of Theophilus Hill, dec’d – Mortgage – One slave Golden, Golden and Gulley received $790.25 from the Hill estate and, as collateral for the loan, gave the Hill estate David, approximately 9 years of age. The papers state that the debt of $790.25 is to be repaid by David. Vol C - p 516 : Recorded 01-04-1853 S. Holland to J.E. Adams, (Administrator) and Jane Shackleford (deceased) - Mortgage - One Slave Promissory Note for $1,000 to be paid in full in twelve months with one slave given as collateral on the note: Manah (Hanah?), female, age 18, light complexion. Vol C – p 578 : Filed 05-11-1853 Louisa Anderson to Laura Jane Anderson – Gift Deed – Division of the estate of Benjamin W. Anderson, deceased – Seven slaves Mariah, Green, William, Scott, Gayle, Vanie and Emily (No further details given) On the 1850 Census of Panola Co TX Benjamin & Louisa Anderson lived in Household # 391-391 ( in the area near Mt. Zion Methodist Church.) On that census it showed that he owned 13 slaves. Vol C – p 581 : Signed 01-03-1853 Filed 05-21-1853 William F.S. Blackman and I.E.M. Blackman to Mariah J. Blackman – Bill of Sale – 20 slaves William, Elvira, Recter, Henry, Amy, Betsy, Sam, Creese, Julia, Martha, James, Nancy, Jimmy, Mariah, Mary, Kessa, Tennessee, Indiana, Jack and Viny (No further details given.) Total purchase price: $10,000 for the twenty slaves (NOTE: No one by the Blackman surname listed on the 1850 or the 1860 Census of Panola Co TX.) Viny appears on the 1870 Census in Household # 1248-1248 with her husband Balus Staten and their children John 11, Rebecca 9, Wilson 4, Laura 2. Viny is shown as being 40 years old and having been born in AR Elvira appears on the 1870 Census in Household # 1249-1249, with her husband Allen Cozine and their children, Samuel 18, Frances, 16, Brook 12, Peter 8, Rambo, 7, Virginia 4 and Louella 1. It shows Elvira as being age40, Allen as being 55 and both being born in AR. Kessa appears on the 1870 Census in Household # 1250-1250 under the name of Kezia Johnson, 25 years old, born in AR. In the house with her is her son David, age 1. Mariah may possibly be the individual shown on the 1870 Census in Household # 1251-1251 as Maria Roquemore, age 18, born in LA. Maria and her husband George Roquemore had no children living in the household with them at that time. Rector may possibly be a bad translation for Rufus. Rufus and Nancy Gay are shown on the 1870 Census in Household # 1256-1256. Rufus is shown as being 18 years old and Nancy 22 years old with both being born in LA. No children were living in the household with them at that time. Sam and Creacy appear on the 1870 Census in Household # 1258-1258 as husband and wife, along with their children John 12, Orka 9 and Arine 6. Sam and Creacy are both shown as having been born in AR. Sam is shown as being 46 years old and Creacy as being 50. Martha appears on the 1870 Census in Household # 1259-1259, with her husband Claborne Richard and their son Warren, age 3. Claborne is shown as being 30 years old and Martha as being 20 years old, with both being born in AR. All of the above families were living in the Deberry area, near Mt. Zion Methodist Church. Vol D – p 429: Signed 07-17-1854 William Tiller to his wife Elizabeth Tiller – Gift Deed – One Slave William Tiller gave his wife Rose, age approximately 17 years, black complexion, stating that he had purchased Rose using funds from the sale of his wife’s separate property, that being property that she had owned before they married. Holland Bill of Sale To D.D. Holland The State of Texas, Panola County. Know all men by these presents that I, Spearman Holland, of said County for and in consideration of fourteen thousand and four hundred dollars to me paid by Devereaux D. Holland of said County have this day and do by these presents bargain, sell, alienate and convey the said D.D. Holland the following Negro slaves. To wit: Jerry of light complexion about 40 years old, Cloa his wife light complexion about 50 years old, Mariah about 20 years yellow complexion, Bob 17 years old light complexion, Edith 14 light complexion, Sam 12 years old complexion light, Charles a child of said Cloa 4 years complexion light; Also Jordan a man aged forty years and his wife aged 28 years and their two children Tom aged about 12 and Squire five years old, Jack 28 years old black complexion, Emily his wife black complexion 25 years of age and her children Ford 6 years old and a child 2 years of age of dark complexion both. Mariah about 24 years old complexion yellow and her children Mary about 3 years old and a child about one year of age both of light complexion; Also a boy Bonds 15 years old light complexion and his sister America 7 years of age of light complexion (rather albino), Matilda 25 years old black complexion and her children Aaron a boy 10 years old black, Mary Jane 5 years light complexion and two other children one 3 years old the other one year of age both rather light, Negro man Charles 25 years age black, Marshall 18 light, Con___d 18 years old complexion black. To have and hold said Negro slaves to him the said Devereaux D. Holland his heirs and assigns forever free from the claim or claims of all persons claiming or to claim the same or either of them forever. (NOTE: Henrietta Crenshaw is shown on the 1870 Census living alone in Household # 1208-1208, while Dorcas and Isaac Crenshaw were living in Household # 1204-1204. On this census, Henrietta said she was born in MO. Vol F – p 110: Signed 07-31-1855, Filed 05-23-1857 Sarah J. McCormack to her husband David McCormack – Deed – Seven Slaves For a total of $5.00 Sarah sold the following individuals to her husband: Jerry, about 25 years, yellow complexion, 5”8-5”10 in height; Zibe, age about 20 years, yellow complexion, 5’8”-5’10” in height; Henry, age about 18 years, yellow complexion, 5”8”-5’10” in height; Jinny, age about 28 years, yellow complexion, at or near 5’0” in height; Linus, age about 7 years, yellow complexion, 4’6” in height; Mary, age about 4 years, dark complexion, 2’0”-3’0” in height; Lucy, age about 2 years, dark complexion, 2’0” in height. NOTE: Neither David or Sarah J. McCormack are listed on the 1850 Census of Panola Co TX. On the 1860 Census David is listed as living alone in Household # 592-592. He is shown as being a 37 year old farmer, born in AL. His property at that time was valued at $19,500. He lived in the Longbranch area, near the Leslie family. David died some time prior to Jun 1864 as it was in that term of court that his estate was entered for probate. Sarah was apparently still alive at that time as her name appears on the probate docket. Wilson – Bill of Sale – “Out of love and affection” – 1 Slave Ann, about 8 years of age 1870 Census of Panola County TX: Ann and her husband John Neal are living not far from the household of D.M. and Louisa Wilson. According to the census Ann was born in AR and John in TX. Vol G - p 401 : Recorded 03-17-1860 Spearman Holland, Jr. to Mary A. Holland - Bill of Sale - One Slave Vol G - p 624 : Recorded 09-25-1860 Spearman Holland, Jr. to John Devereaux Holland, Lela Holland, Nancy Lin Holland, and Spearman Holland, Sr. (Trustee) - Deed of Trust - Ten Slaves Citing "Natural Love and affection for my children John Devereaux Holland, Lela Holland and Nancy Lin Holland" Spearman, Jr. released the following slaves (and their increase) to Spearman, Sr. to be used for the care and benefit of the children: Crockett, 23 years of age and copper colored, his wife Jane who was 20 years of age and dark; also Jane's four children, "a Negro boy" aged 8 and yellow complexion, Lizzy age 6 and "two small girls"; Also Buster (Rester?) aged 18, Jacob aged 21, Caroline aged 18 and her child and Puss aged 18. Purchase price: $2,400 for the pair. 1870 Census of Panola County TX: Hannah and her husband Ranold Turner was living near Richard Golden. The census shows Hannah as having been born in SC and her husband in VA. They have a 2 yr old daughter Mary. Davis and wife to M.F. Beasley – Deed – “Out of love for my granddaughter, Mary Fletcher Beasley – 1 Slave Dick, about 11 years of age, black complexion 1870 Census of Panola Co TX: Dick was living not far away from Mary Fletcher Beasley and her husband Wyatt Beasley. He had taken the surname of Salter and is shown as having been born in AL. He was living in the household of Andrew Salter who was also shown as having been born in AL. Davis – Deed – “To our beloved son” – 1 Slave Andrew, about 28 years of age, black complexion 1870 Census of Panola County TX: Andrew was head of his own household near to the white Davis families. Andrew was shown as 37 years old and was born in AL. His wife Ellen was also born in AL and their children are shown as all having been born in TX: Lucy (age 17), Ann (15), Chaney (12), Harriett (8), Thomas (6), John (3) and Eliza (7 mo). Inventory listed 17 Negro slaves, but no names given. Elizabeth J. Knott petitioned to be administrator of her estate and explained that the delay in the probate proceedings had been caused by a business trip to Mississippi. Probate File # 26 Estate of Dennis Ivy Ivy's wife shown as being Lucinda. Inventory filed Aug 15, 1848, one Negro boy Tom, about 10 years old - Value $400 Probate File # 76 Estate of Charles W. Moorman He died Feb 14, 1850. Exhibit recorded March 28, 1851 shows no slaves, although the 1850 Census lists Moorman as owning one slave. Inventory filed March 31, 1850, one Negro man Moses, age about 55; one Negro woman Dolly, age about 45; one Negro man Iley (Ivy?), age about 30; One Negro man Tillman, age about 28; one Negro man Moses, age about 20; one Negro man Anthony, age about 18; one Negro man Rhod, age about 16; one Negro man Tom, age about 14; one Negro man Bill, age about 12; one Negro man Pleasant, age about 10. Probate File # 219 Estate of H.H. Golden He died March 4, 1855 – Left two children, both infants, for two different mothers. The mother of the oldest is dead, the mother of the second is living. Richard Golden is the paternal grandfather of both children. The children are entitled to an interest in “some Negros, land and other property” The child of Sarah Dillard Golden, is in the keeping of R. Golden, the youngest is living with its mother. “The Christian names of the two minors, the petitioner does not remember, but they are both minors and the legal heirs of Henry. The Christian names of the minors will both be supplied at the proper time.” Petition by Richard Golden to be appointed guardian of both children. Dec 1855 Term of Court Richard Golden as principal and Thomas G. Davenport and W.A. Jernigan as securities on a $5,000 bond. Richard Golden appointed guardian of the minor children of Henry H. Golden, to-wit: Zora DelNorte Golden and Leona Catherine Golden. Probate File #536 Estate of Mace Golden Mace Golden died on or about September 2, 1866 – Items in the inventory of outstanding accounts of the estate: Gladney and Company for Burial Expenses $51.36 and Charles Cox for coffin $30.00.
