All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ******************************************************************************** Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge and Member of Parker County Grays Passes Away William Pitt Martin, 63, died at the Hillcrest Sanitarium Monday after an operation following a several days' illness. An operation was performed Saturday by Fort Worth surgeons. Burial will take place in Searcy, Arkansas, his former home, the body being forwarded to that place Monday. Funeral services will be conducted in Searcy. He leaves besides his wife, one daughter - Miss Frank Martin, who was visiting in Searcy at the time of his death, and three sons - John O. Martin of Dallas, Edward K. Martin of Charleston, SC and Will Martin of Tupelo, Miss. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. T.P. Murphy of Dallas, and brother - E.K. Martin of Dallas. Mrs. Martin and his daughter, will continue to make their home in Weatherford. Colonel Martin as he was known by all Weatherford people, had lived in Weatherford but two years, coming here from Fordyce, Ark. For many years he lived in Searcy, Arkansas. He was born in Murray county, Tennessee, where he lived until 1862, when he became a private in Forrest's Cavalry. he remained with Forest until the close of the war. Following the close of the Civil War he engaged in different pursuits, finally going on the road. As a travelinig salesman he was active for 26 years, when he took up the hotel business. As a member of the Presbyterian church, he lived the life of a consistent Christian man and was always known as an upright and conscientious man. He was also a member of the Parker County Confederate Grays of Weatherford and took an active interest in everything that was of interest to the former soldiers. Deceased was Exalted ruler of the local Elks lodge and that organizaiton will march in a body to the train which will bear the body to its final resting place in Searcy.
