Porter, 81 years. Another familiar figure will be seen no more upon our streets. Uncle "Ben" Porter, as he was familiarly called came to Weatherford in the early 1870s from Tennessee, himself and family united First Presbyterian church in 1876. For several years Mr. Porter was one of Weatherford's prominent business men but retired when he found his health would not permit an active business life. For many years he has been in feeble health but always cheerful, with a kind word and a Christian admonition for all. He was a Ruling Elder in the Presbyterian church for many years, and his life was an open book. He was true to his conviction and lived a consecrated life. When suffering came he bore it with that fortitude characteristic of the true child of God. He has often talked of the future and expressed his readiness to go when his Master summoned. The body was met at the T&P train Saturday and taken in charge by Phoenix Lodge No. 275. A.F. & A.M. and escorted to the cemetery. Rev. Henry Austin, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, held a short service, at the grave, after which the Masonic fraternity paid the last tribute to their departed brother, with their burial service. Pallbearers: Judge R.L. Stennis, J.G. Sharp, J.E.H. Railey, W.R. Turner, William Boone, J.M. Sparks. The Weekly Herald Weatherford, Texas Thursday evening - May 18, 1911
