Squyres was a native of the State of Louisiana, 87, and reared to early manhood in that state. While yet a young man he cast his fortune with the new State of Texas and during all the long years of his active life has been more than a potent factor in the upbuilding and development of this state and county. He came to Weatherford in the year 1856 when Parker county was on the extreme frontier and became one of the first settlers of this community. For the first few years of his life he engaged in the mercantile business and until the breaking out of the Civil War, enlisted in the Confederate army he made a gallant soldier leaving behind him an enviable record as a soldier and patriot. Since the war John W. Squyres has held many offices of public trust and confidence in this state, the most conspicous of which was that of sheriff and justice of the peace. For more than 25 yaers he almost continuously held the office of justice of the peace of the precinct in which he lived in this country and by his ruggend honesty and uniform fairness so endeared the people to him so that it became a pleasure to support him for this office.
