Stoy HEREFORD - Arthur M. "Art" Stoy, 77, died Sunday, March 30, 1997. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Keith Boutwell, chaplain at Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice, and Dr. Tom Fuller of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in West Park Cemetery by Gilliland-Watson Funeral Home. Mr. Stoy was born in Terrell. He moved to Deaf Smith County in 1956 from Moriarty, N.M. He graduated from Texas Technological College with a bachelor of science degree. He did his postgraduate work in agronomy. He was a member of the first crop-judging team of Tech and won international recognition. He was a seedsman for Garrison Seed and a member of First United Methodist Church, where he had taught the Homebuilders Sunday School class for 40 years. Mr. Stoy was a past president and honorary lifetime member of the Texas Seed Trade Association. He was an honorary lifetime member of the New Mexico Seed Trade Association. He was a past president and coach of the Hereford Little League and Pony League Associations. He was an assistant scout master and a member of the Amarillo Council of Boy Scouts. He was a past president of the Hereford Golden K and a supporter of George Warner Day Care Center and Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Mr. Stoy served on the Agricultural Committee of the Hereford Chamber of Commerce. He made the selection for the first pure strain of German Foxtail Millet, Strain R, helping lobby for and getting passed House Bill 1002. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He married Mary Martin in 1945 at Eutawville, S.C. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Tommy Stoy of Stratford and John Stoy of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; two daughters, Mary Johnson of Amarillo and Patricia Spencer of Wayzata, Minn.; four sisters, Jessie Roberts of Benjamin, Lucille Minas and Lorraine Parks, both of Wichita Falls, and Polly Floyd of Houston; and seven grandchildren. Denamay Leona Bolin PAMPA - Denamay Leona Bolin, 57, died Sunday, March 30, 1997. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in Fairview Cemetery with the Rev. M.B. Smith, retired Baptist minister, officiating. Arrangements are by CarmichaelWhatley Funeral Directors. Mrs. Bolin was born in Noble County, Okla. She moved to Pampa in 1956 from Perry, Okla. She had been an Avon saleslady for many years. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. She married James T. Bolin in 1956 at Perry. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Vicki Bolin Patrick, in 1996. Survivors include her husband; a son, John Bolin of Pampa; a sister, Leota Talley of Shawnee, Okla.; two brothers, Dennis Grayson of Arkansas and Kendall Grayson of Pueblo, Colo.; and four grandchildren. Juanita M. Gowin SHAMROCK - Juanita M. Gowin, 66, died Sunday, March 30, 1997. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Shamrock Cemetery with the Rev. Joe G. Jernigan, pastor of Calvary Christian Fellowship Church, officiating. Burial will be in Shamrock Cemetery by Wright Funeral Directors. Mrs. Gowin was born in Twitty and had lived in Shamrock most of her life. She had been a contract mail carrier since 1962. She was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church at Shamrock. She married Charles Willis Gowin in 1953 at Clovis, N.M. He died in 1992. Survivors include two sons, Paul Gowin of Canadian and Arval Gowin of Red Oak; a daughter, Sandra Proffitt of Shamrock; a sister, Allie Mae Toolen of Gillette, Wyo.; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity. William Claude Morris Jr. PAMPA - William Claude "Dub" Morris Jr., 83, died Saturday, March 29, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Price-Jackson Funeral Home Chapel at Quanah with the Rev. Cecil Ferguson officiating. Burial will be in Quanah Memorial Park at Quanah by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mr. Morris was born in Quanah and lived there most of his life. He moved to Pampa in 1984. He was a trackman for Santa Fe Railway for 30 years before retiring in 1972. He was a Baptist church member. Raymond L. Armstrong PAMPA - Raymond L. Armstrong, 76, died Sunday, March 30, 1997. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Mr. Armstrong was born in Hilltop near Calvin, Okla. He married Virginia Lee Ogle in 1945 at Borger. He moved to Skellytown in 1945 and lived there until moving to Pampa in 1982. He retired from Cabot Corp. in 1982 after 38 years as a ship foreman. He had owned and operated Armstrong Coffee Service Inc. since 1968. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Roy Armstrong of Sugar Land and Virgil Armstrong of Sulphur, La.; a brother, Lewis Armstrong of Marysville, Calif.; a sister, Gladys Helton of Tulsa, Okla.; and two grandchildren. Mrs. Goodnough was born in Gorman. She married Riley Goodnough in 1924 at Gorman. He died in 1994. She also was preceded in death by a son, N.T. Goodnough, in 1981. She had been a resident of the Lazbuddie community since 1937, moving from Eastland County. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ of Lazbuddie. Survivors include two brothers, Edward Choate of Coleman and Gene Choate of Levelland; a grandson; and two greatgrandsons. Jewell Parker PADUCAH - Jewell Parker, 87, died Sunday, March 30, 1997. Miss Parker was born in Cottle County and had been a lifelong resident of the area. She was employed by M.E. Moses Variety Store in Paducah for more than 35 years. Joe Day SUNRAY - Joe Day, 71, died Monday, March 31, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Sunray Baptist Church with the Rev. Philip Hilton, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Lane Memorial Cemetery by Morrison Funeral Directors. Mr. Day was born in Madill, Okla., and had been a Moore County resident since 1957. He was an automotive mechanic and a veteran of the Army and Navy. He was a member of Sunray Baptist Church, a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a past post commander of the Dumas Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1475. He married Mary Wilson in 1945 at Sulphur, Okla. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Kay Day, in 1953. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Joe L. Day of Amarillo and Richard Day of Sunray; two daughters, Stella Louise Tronnes of Crookston, Minn., and Sharon Britton of Sunray; a brother, James E. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Davenport, pastor, and the Rev. Jesse Hodge, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery by Wallace Funeral Home. Mr. Mote was born and raised in Wise County and attended school there. He moved to Swisher County in 1939. He married Evelyn Jones in 1941 at Tulia. He served in the Army from 1942 to 1943. After being discharged, he lived in Pampa for several years and worked in the oil fields. He also worked for Plains Creamery. He returned to Tulia in 1948 and worked for Hill Trucking Co. of Hart, Triangle Butane and Barbour Brothers. He later farmed before retiring in 1980. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Tulia and the Oddfellows of Pampa. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Marilyn Foster of Tulia and Mary Jane Cromer of Borger; a son, Weldon Mote of Tulia; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. "Cope" Copeland, 83, died Sunday, March 30, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Lust, pastor, and the Rev. Todd Dyess, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Perryton, officiating. Burial will be in Ochiltree Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home. Mr. Copeland was born in Ochiltree. He graduated from Perryton High School. He lived in Farnsworth from 1936 to 1942 and in Morse from 1942 to 1954. He had lived in Spearman since 1954. He married Joe Brown in 1936 at Perryton. He managed Equity Elevator in Morse from 1942 until 1954 and Equity Elevator in Spearman from 1954 to 1979, when he retired. He was a member, former administrative board chairman and Sunday school teacher at First United Methodist Church. Mr. Copeland was a Boy Scout leader for many years and had received the Silver Beaver Award. He also was active in 4-H for many years. He helped organize the Farm Bureau in Hansford County and was a charter member of the Hansford County Farm Bureau. He was a past president of the Spearman Chamber of Commerce and was their Citizen of the Year in 1957. He was a Spearman city councilman for 13 years and former member of the Spearman Rotary Club. He also served on the Panhandle Regional Planning Commission and was a member of the Hansford Lodge No. 1040 AF&AM. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Joe Lynn Leland of Broomfield, Colo.; a son, Kim Copeland of Austin; a sister, Addie Mae Juarez of Bentonville, Ark.; a brother, Leonard Copeland of Garden Grove, Calif.; and two grandchildren. Hughes St. Mrs. Allen was born in Hearne. She graduated from Dunbar High School at Lubbock. She received a bachelor's degree from Huston-Tillotson College at Austin and a master's degree at Texas Southern University at Houston. She retired from Horace Mann Junior High School after teaching for 35 years. She was a member of Jenkins Chapel Baptist Church, the Miles Jenkins Circle and Delta Sigma Theta sorority. Survivors include a daughter, Esther J. Ford of Amarillo; a sister, Esther K. Cowens of Amarillo; a grandson; and a great-grandson. He graduated from Clayton High School in 1939. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II. He worked for Colorado Interstate Gas for more than 43 years and served as district superintendent. He was a member and a past president of the Lions Club at Fritch and a member of Southern Baptist Church at Fritch. He was a charter member of Fast Break Fans Club at West Texas A&M University. He married Lela Thornton in 1949 at Raton, N.M. He was preceded in death by a son, David Lee Howell, in 1993. She graduated from West Texas State Demonstration School. She married Paul White in 1927 at Canyon. She was a member of Amarillo Bible Church for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter, Marilynn Hilliard. Survivors include three daughters, Phyllis Dillon and Paulla White, both of Amarillo, and Barbara Lewis of Lubbock; four grandchildren, including Jo Lynn Hilliard Hatton of Corpus Christi; three great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. Gee was born in Camargo, Okla., and moved to Dumas at the age of 7. He grew up in Dumas and worked for the city for 10 1/2 years. He then moved to Pampa and worked for Con Kemco Weed Control for eight years. He had lived in Amarillo since 1992. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He worked as a shop foreman. He married Stella Thompson in 1981 at Pampa. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Anita Casous of Amarillo, Barbra Smith of Plains, Kan., and Lita Knapp of Abilene; two stepsons, Rickie Swendall of Fort Worth and Jerry Carper of Florence, Ore.; a sister, Billie Moore of Amarillo; a stepsister, Carlon Cooper of Dalhart; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Elbert Cox Elbert Cox, 80, of Amarillo, died Monday, March 31, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors, Martin Road Chapel, 1505 Martin Road, with the Rev. Eugene Cox, Baptist minister from Logansport, La., officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. Cox was born in Little Rock, Ark., and had lived in Amarillo for 56 years. He served in the Service Troop, 124th Cavalry as a pack driver, machine gunner and teamster in the Army during World War II. He married Pauline Castle in 1959 at Clovis, N.M. He worked for ASARCO for 31 years before retiring in 1975. He traveled to McAllen during the winters and enjoyed fishing and camping with his family. He was a member of First Christian Church of Little Rock. Survivors include his wife; two sons, John C. Martin and Jerry D. Martin, both of Amarillo; a sister, Nell Cox of Logansport; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. New Mexico Clifford Borden PORTALES, N.M. - Clifford Borden, 79, died Saturday, March 29, 1997, at Lubbock, Texas. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ross Dunn officiating. Burial will be in Portales Cemetery by Wheeler Mortuary. Mr. Borden was born in Floyd and graduated from Floyd High School in 1937. After high school, he worked in his brothers' store at Floyd. He farmed for a short time before entering the Army Air Corps. During World War II, he served in England for 36 months with the 305th Bombardment Group as a ground crew chief. After his return from the Air Corps in 1946, he and his brothers ran a farm and also purchased a grocery store which they named Borden Brothers Grocery. In 1956, they started the Borden Brothers Peanut Co. They also had a cattle feeding operation. Mr. Borden managed the cattle operation and his brother, R.L., managed the peanut portion of the business. In 1971, they separated the businesses. Mr. Borden farmed west of Portales until 1990, when he sold both the farm and the cattle feeding operation. He was a welder and designed and built equipment, fences, etc. He attended First United Methodist Church of Portales. He was a member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars 3299 and of the Clovis Elks Lodge. He married Mary Alice Walton in 1946 at Hope. She died in 1982. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Anne Benson of El Paso, Texas; two brothers, R.L. Borden and Tom Borden, both of Portales; and three grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to the United Methodist Church building fund. Elsewhere Dr. Jerry J. Watson SAN ANTONIO - Dr. Jerry J. Watson, 57, died Thursday, March 20, 1997. Memorial services were in San Antonio. Dr. Watson was born in Pampa. He attended Lefors schools and received his bachelor of art's degree from West Texas State University at Canyon. He received his master's and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan. He taught English at the University of Iowa for 20 years. Survivors include a brother, Joe Watson of Lefors; and a sister, Mary Wariner of Lefors. Terry McWhorter LUBBOCK - Terry McWhorter, 52, died Monday, March 31, 1997. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Christian Church with Dr. Michael Passmore, pastor, and Wayne Hollinshead officiating. Arrangements are by Sanders Funeral Home. Mr. McWhorter was born in Perryton and graduated from Perryton High School. He graduated from Texas Tech University in 1967 with a degree in accounting. He was tri-captain of the 1966 Texas Tech football team. He also was president of the Double T Association. He worked for Bolinger, Segars, Gilbert & Moss, CPAs, from 1966 until 1991. He served on various boards including the March of Dimes, Texas Boys Ranch, Lettermans Club of Texas Tech University, the Lubbock chapter of the CPAs and the Lubbock Jaycees. He married Marcia Hightower in 1982 at Lubbock. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Luke McWhorter and Ben McWhorter, both of the home; his parents, Paul and Lorene McWhorter of Amarillo; two brothers, Dick McWhorter of Dallas and Danny McWhorter of Amarillo; and a sister, Kathy Poole of Vigo Park. Mary Frances Howes HUTCHINSON, Kan. - Mary Frances Howes, 82, a former Amarillo resident, died Sunday, March 30, 1997. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Johnson & Sons Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Dr. Edwin C. Linberg officiating. Burial will be in Fairlawn Burial Park. Mrs. Howes was born in Fort Worth. She was a 1933 graduate of Amarillo High School in Amarillo. She had been a resident of Hutchinson since 1972, moving from Amarillo. She was a homemaker and a member of First Christian Church of Hutchinson. She married Robert H. Howes in 1934 at Amarillo. He died in 1978. She also was preceded in death by a son, Billy Bob Howes. Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn Fisher of Hutchinson; a brother, Bob Merriman of Amarillo; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
