Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Polk Street United Methodist Church with Dr. Jim Garrett, pastor, and Dr. Bobby McMillan, pastor of St. John United Methodist Church of Lubbock, officiating. Eulogy will be by Dr. Walter Dickinson. Private family burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Dr. Grooms was born in Fort Worth. He graduated from Southern Methodist University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and served as president of the Wesley Foundation. He graduated from the Washington University School of Medicine and served his internship, residency and fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He moved to Amarillo in 1972 to open his medical practice with doctors Dine, Nicklaus and Nichols. Dr. Grooms was a clinical professor of internal medicine at Texas Tech University Medical School of Amarillo. He was a member of the Potter Randall County Medical Society and the American Academy of Internists. At the time of his death, he was a partner in practice with Internal Medicine, LLP. He was a member of Polk Street United Methodist Church and the Aldersgate Sunday school class. He had served on the Administrative Board and the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee. He was active in Boy Scout Troop 86 as an adult leader. He was an Army veteran serving during the Vietnam War with the 93rd Evacuation Hospital. He married Suzanne Simmons in 1973 at Knoxville, Tenn. Survivors include his wife; two sons, David Grooms and Michael Grooms, both of Amarillo; his father, Dr. Jordan Grooms of Amarillo; and a sister, Telie Grooms Nichols of Amarillo. The family suggests memorials be to Polk Street United Methodist Church, 1401 S. Polk St., Amarillo, Texas 79101; or Ceta Canyon Methodist Camp and Retreat Center, Health Center Renovation, HCR 1, Box 31, Happy, Texas 79047. Elsewhere Jack Bearden MATADOR - Jack Bearden, 83, died Sunday, June 1, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ron Kelley, pastor, and the Rev. Rickey Lawrence, pastor of the Full Gospel Church of Roaring Springs, officiating. Burial will be at East Mound Cemetery. Arrangements are by Seigler Funeral Home of Matador. Mr. Bearden was born in Paducah. He had been a resident of Matador and Motley County for more than 50 years. He was a retired rancher and farmer. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons, James Bearden and Ross Bearden, both of Matador; a daughter, Jackie Green of Tahoka; two sisters, Ade Smith and Ophia Tomison, both of Paducah; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Area Irene Higgins BORGER - Irene Higgins, 83, died Saturday, May 31, 1997. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of the Fountains with the Rev. Leonard Forsythe, pastor of Bible Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be at Westlawn Cemetery. Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Directors of Borger. Mrs. Higgins was born in Jefferson County, Ark. She had been a resident of Borger for 60 years. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Franklin Higgins, in 1964. Survivors include a son, Mike Higgins of Grapevine; two daughters, Elaine Cleek and Patty Higgins, both of Borger; two sisters, Maudie Yoder of Borger, and Violet Adams of Deming, N.M.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Peggie Jo Phillips Johnson CLAUDE - Peggie Jo Phillips Johnson, 59, died Friday, May 30, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 6969 E. Interstate 40, in Amarillo. The body will be cremated. Mrs. Johnson was born in Amarillo. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church. She married Charles L. Johnson in 1957 at Amarillo. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Treasa Ruth Johnson. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Carla L. Forest of Houston; two brothers, M.C. Phillips of Amarillo, and R.W. "Pete'' Phillips of Muleshoe; and three grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to the Claude Ambulance Service. Crystal Linnea Linthicum DUMAS - Crystal Linnea Linthicum, 3-month-old daughter of Shawn Wolfe of Amarillo, and Jack Linthicum of Jacksonville, Fla., died Friday, May 30, 1997. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in the Dumas Cemetery with the Rev. Jay McGaughy of Temple Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors of Dumas. Crystal was born in Amarillo. Survivors include her parents; her grandparents, Steve and Carla Floyd of Amarillo, Robert L. Wolfe of Silver City, N.M., and Betty Wallis of Kansas City, Mo.; her great grandparents, Bill and Evajo York of Dumas, Perl and Phyllis Floyd of Sommerset, Ky., and Zona King of Independence, Ky. Jimmie Lou Martin Humphreys AMHERST - Jimmie Lou Martin Humphreys, 64, died Saturday, May 31, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Baptist Church at Sudan with the Rev. Cliff Hargrove, pastor, and the Rev. Aaron Reed, pastor of First Baptist Church of Amherst, officiating. Burial will be at Sudan Cemetery in Sudan. Arrangements are by Ellis Funeral Home of Sudan. Mrs. Humphreys was born in O'Dell. She had lived in Amherst since 1982, moving from Sudan. She was a graduate of Sudan High School. She was a waitress and a homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Amherst and a member of the "74'' Domino Club of Sudan. She was also a member of the fraternal order of the Eagles in Clovis, N.M. She married Norman Humphreys in 1982 at Sudan. Survivors include her husband; a son, Martin Lee Davison of Sudan; two daughters, Sheryl Dyanne Morris of Muleshoe, and Pamela Ruth Merryman of Sudan; two stepdaughters, Kim Earheart of Friona, and Christy Humphreys of Austin; her mother, Ona Ruth Martin of Sudan; a sister, Sammie Ruth Connor of Sudan; and 10 grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Minton / Chatwell Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Scott Cundiff, pastor of Trinity Nazarene Church, officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens in Pampa. Mr. Moss owned and operated Johnnie's Barber Shop in Borger for 32 years. He married Lora Goodson in 1924 at Memphis. She died in 1979. Survivors include two daughters, Edith Spears of Lake Tanglewood, and Wanda Collins of Dumas; four granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to First Church of the Nazarene, 501 Kaye, Borger, Texas. Weldon Sexton WELLINGTON - Weldon Sexton, 73, died Sunday, June 1, 1997. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Dodson Church of Christ with Bob Garton, minister, officiating. Burial will be at Dodson Cemetery. Arrangements are by Adams Funeral Home of Wellington. Mr. Sexton was born in Collinsworth County near the Fresno community. He attended school at Hal Smith and Westview. He was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Church of Christ and a former member of the Dodson Lions Club. He served on the Dodson School Board for several years. He married Lora Mae Pittman in 1944 at Hollis, Okla. Survivors include his wife; a son, Dennis Sexton of Wellington; four daughters, Carolyn Randall of Hollis, Okla., Linda Sherrill of Altus, Okla., Sandra Bogle of Tulsa, Okla., and Judy Wischkaemper of Wellington; two brothers, Granvel Sexton of Oklahoma City, and W.C. Sexton of Altus, Okla.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to Golden Spread Hospice or to Dodson Church of Christ.
