Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Rector Funeral Home Chapel, 2800 Osage St., with the Rev. Rick D. Mathis, pastor of West Amarillo Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mrs. Clarke was born in Honey Grove and moved to Amarillo in 1952. She attended Amarillo High School. She retired from Pantex in 1990 after 16 years as a production technician. She was preceded in death by a son, Windell Ray Howerton, in 1994; and by a daughter and granddaughter, Sherry Renee Howerton Northern and Nicole Renee Northern, in 1976. Survivors include her mother, Emmer Fay Morrison of Amarillo; a daughter, Jacquelyn Kay Chadick of Amarillo; a son, Roger Dale Howerton of Amarillo; two sisters, Evelyn Lisenby of Miami and Elaine Calderon of Amarillo; four brothers, Leon Morrison, Billy Ray Morrison and Jimmy Morrison, all of Amarillo, and Tom Morrison of Snyder; and four grandchildren. The family will be at 1601 S. Taylor St., and requests memorials be to Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice and Life Enrichment Center. Beulah L. Whittington Beulah L. Whittington, 96, of Amarillo, died Friday, Oct. 3, 1997. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors Pioneer Chapel, 2615 Paramount Blvd., with the Rev. Gene Anderson of First Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Whittington was born in Gober. She married J.E. Whittington in 1934 at Shamrock. He died in 1955. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Marie Cantrell. She had been a member of the Nazarene church since 1922. Survivors include a son, James Clifford Whittington of Mesa, Ariz.; a niece Dorothy Winters of Amarillo; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The family will be at 3502 Paramount Blvd., and requests memorials in lieu of flowers be to First Church of the Nazarene. W.T. Smoot Sr. W.T. "Tandy'' Smoot Sr., 96, of Amarillo, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First Baptist Church Chapel with Dr. Howard Batson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mr. Smoot was born in Cheyenne, Okla., and had lived in Amarillo since 1943. He attended West Texas State Teachers College and taught in Tulia for one year. He had worked eight years in the banking business. He began farming and ranching in 1930 and retired after 56 years. He also worked in the hotel business for 33 years. Mr. Smoot was past president of the Best Western Association and the Highway 287 Motel Association, U.S. Highway 66 Motel Association and Panhandle Motel Association. He also was a member of the Downtown Rotary Club, Khiva Temple and Masonic lodges in Cheyenne and Reydon, Okla., where he was First Worshipful Master. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He married Edna Knight in 1925 at White Deer. Survivors include his wife; a son, W.T. "Bill'' Smoot Jr. of Amarillo; a brother, Francis Smoot of Midland; three sisters, B.G. (Pearl) Forrest of Lubbock, Hattie Noftsker of Carlsbad, N.M., and Florence Aldridge of Midland; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association, 2200 W. Seventh Ave., Amarillo, Texas 79106. New Mexico Jay T. Moore TUCUMCARI, N.M. - Jay T. Moore, 76, died Friday, Oct. 3, 1997. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in San Jon Baptist Church at San Jon. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, south of San Jon, by Dunn Funeral Home. Mr. Moore was born in San Jon and had been a lifetime resident of the San Jon and Tucumcari area. He served in World War II. He was a retired railroader. At the time of his death, he was active in ranching. He was a member of Elks Lodge No. 1172 in Tucumcari. Survivors include his wife, LaVerne Moore of Tucumcari; two sons, Larry Moore and Quinn Moore, both of Tucumcari; a daughter, B. Denise Border of Tucumcari; three brothers, Clyde Moore of Amarillo, Calvin Moore of Silver City and Billy Moore of San Jon; and five grandchildren. Ella Augusta Sewell TUCUMCARI, N.M. - Ella Augusta Sewell, 87, died Friday, Oct. 3, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Dunn Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Tucumcari Memorial Park. Mrs. Sewell was born in Snowball, Ark., and she grew up in Love County, Okla. She married Hulen Parks Sewell in 1931 at Ardmore, Okla. They moved in 1932 to Quay County, where her husband was an auto mechanic in San Jon and operated a wrecker service on old Route 66. She was a homemaker and did substitute teaching in the San Jon schools. She previously was an active member of San Jon Baptist Church, and served for a number of years as Sunday school superintendent and training union leader. She also served as a 4-H Club leader and Cub Scout den mother. In 1964, the Sewells built a new business in Tucumcari, the Sewell Machine Shop, which they owned and operated until 1985, when their eldest son took over. Mr. Sewell died in 1993. Survivors include five children, James Sewell of Tucumcari, Gene Sewell of Texhoma, Okla., Patsy Monk of Melrose, Dariel Sewell of Garland, Texas, and Mary Helen Carter of Portales; 17 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren. Area Durwood Royal SHAMROCK - Durwood Royal, 72, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997. Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Sunday in Shamrock Cemetery with the Rev. Joe G. Jernigan, pastor of Calvary Christian Fellowship, officiating. Arrangements were by Wright Funeral Directors. Mr. Royal had been a rancher most of his life. He moved to Shamrock in 1994 from California. Survivors include two daughters, Carol Cross of Mannford, Okla., and Louise Phillips of Pampa; a sister, Ferna Anglin of Wellington; and seven granddaughters. Lurline Walker TURKEY - Lurline Walker, 98, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Melvin Clinton, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery by Myers-Long Funeral Directors. Mrs. Walker was born in Comanche. She married Willis Walker in 1921 at Comanche and they moved to the Turkey area in 1925. He died in 1981. She was a charter member of First Baptist Church, where she taught the ladies Sunday school class for many years. She also was a charter member of the Nuevo Study Club. Survivors include a daughter, Norma Hefner of Denver; a brother, Sam F. Todd of Hamilton; two sisters, Louise Meacham of Turkey and Grace Todd of Comanche; three granddaughters; and three greatgrandchildren. The family requests memorials be to First Baptist Church. Muriel Evelyn Moore McLEAN - Muriel Evelyn Moore, 81, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Church of Christ with George Watson, lay minister, officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery by Lamb Funeral Home. Mrs. Moore was born at Carey in Childress County. She moved to McLean from Clarendon in 1939. She married James Arthur Moore in 1947 at Wheeler. He preceded her in death. She was a retired seamstress and worked for Marie Foundations for 20 years. She recently took up quiltmaking. She was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include two daughters, Wilma Jean Clifford of Quinlan and Patricia "Patty'' Lee of Portland, Ore.; a son, Richard Moore of White Deer; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Otis Dry SPEARMAN - Otis Dry, 89, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home. Mr. Dry was born in Fairland, Okla., and had lived in Spearman since 1941. He was a farmer. He also had operated a domino and pool hall, and had managed the historic Spearman Hotel. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Chapman. Survivors include a son, Floyd Dry of Spearman; a daughter, Betty Bingamon of Cushing, Okla.; two brothers, Hubert Dry of Seneca, Mo., and R.E. Dry of Miami, Okla.; a sister, Dora Floyd of Wellington, Kan.; seven grandchildren; 23 greatgrandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to Hansford Manor, 707 Roland, Spearman, Texas 79081. Gennie Bruton DIMMITT - Gennie Bruton, 82, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 1997. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Ivey Chapel of Foskey-Lilley-McGill Funeral Home. Officiants will be Mrs. Bruton's grandson, Paul Talley; the Rev. Jim Hardwick, hospice chaplain; and the Rev. Howard Rhodes, pastor of First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Castro Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Mrs. Bruton was born in DeKalb County, Tenn. She had lived in Lazbuddie before moving to Dimmitt in 1958. She married Forrest Lee "Jack'' Bruton in 1945 at Pratt, Kan. He died in 1960. She served as a cafeteria worker for 20 years with the Dimmitt Independent School District. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge. Survivors include two sons, Chuck Bruton of Amarillo and Glenn Bruton of Atlanta; a daughter, Linda Talley of Waco; and three grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to Plains Memorial Hospice Care, 112 West Jones St., Dimmitt, Texas 79027. Richard T. Sanders PAMPA - Richard T. "Tom'' Sanders, 91, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Memory Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Earl Maddux, Baptist minister from Oklahoma City, officiating. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mr. Sanders was born in Denton County and had lived in the Pampa area since 1927. He was a longtime oil field driller and had operated an oil field trucking company for many years. He retired in 1984. He was a member of Pampa Masonic Lodge No. 966 AF&AM and the Lubbock Scottish Rite Consistory. He was a Baptist. Survivors include his wife, Milly Sanders; a daughter, Teresa Ordway of Fort Worth; a sister, Thelma Pate of Wichita Falls; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to a favorite charity. Shig Akagi HEREFORD - Shig Akagi, 71, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 1997. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Ricks Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services 10 a.m. Wednesday in Ordway, Colo., by Giffy Funeral Home in Ordway. Mr. Akagi was born in Crowley, Colo. He had been a farmer in Hereford for 20 years. Survivors include three brothers, Katashi Akagi of Bullhead City, Ariz., Genzo Akagi of Ulysses, Kan., and Kaku Akagi of Caldwell, Idaho; and two sisters, Asano Quarne of Crowley and Sue Nagamoto of Richland, Wash. Henry Tipton Hamblen WAYSIDE - Henry Tipton "Unk Henry'' Hamblen, 80, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Wayside Community Church with the Rev. Charles Davenport, pastor of First Baptist Church in Tulia, and the Rev. Jim Tope officiating. Arrangements are by Holley Funeral Home in Canyon. Mr. Hamblen was born in the Wayside community. He was a farmer and rancher. He was active as a 4-H leader and was involved with the Wheat Growers Association and the Happy Feedlot. He also served 35 years on the board of the Farm Bureau. He was a deacon in the Baptist church at Wayside and was state president of the Coachman RV Club. Survivors include his wife, Bernice Hamblen; two sisters, Ida Mae Rogers and Ocie Parsons of Canyon; and a brother, Oleff Hamblen of Calimesa, Calif. The family requests memorials be to the Wayside Emergency Team. Wenona R. Good PERRYTON - Wenona R. Hance Good, 79, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Edith Ford Cemetery. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Trinity Presbyterian Church with Dr. Don McDonald, pastor, officiating. Arrangement are by Stickley-Hill Funeral Directors of Canadian. Mrs. Good was born in Canadian. She graduated from Canadian High School. She married Arnold A. Good in 1940 at Canadian. He died in 1986. She lived in Canadian until 1951, when she moved to the Notla community in Ochiltree County. She was a licensed beautician and ran the family ranch from 1982 to 1992. Between 1958 and 1975, the Goods actively worked to control erosion on their land. They also implemented programs such as a conservation cropping system, contour farming and wildlife upland habitat management. Mrs. Good was recognized as the 1988 Conservation Farmer from Ochiltree County by the Ochiltree Soil and Water Conservation District. She then was entered in the Texas Conservation Awards Program, and was named Texas Conservation Farmer of the Region. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Canadian and the Notla Home Demonstration Club. She was an active supporter of 4-H and FFA in Ochiltree County. Survivors include a son, Keith Good of Perryton; a daughter, Kay Gregath of Hendersonville, Tenn.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to Ochiltree County 4-H or a favorite charity.
