He had been a production foreman for Coastal Oil and Gas Co. for 30 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a square dance club and the National Rifle Association. He married Bettye June Mitchell in 1951 at Clayton, N.M. Survivors include his wife; a son, James Miller of Fabens; a daughter, Kathey Powell of Amarillo; a sister, Rosa Van Tassel of Idalia, Colo.; a brother, Frank Miller of Greenbrier, Ark.; and four grandchildren. He was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church and the Paralyzed Veterans Association. He attended Palo Duro High School. Survivors include a daughter, Leslie M. Sims of Gainesville, Fla.; his mother, Elsie L. Fenton of Amarillo; a brother, David L. Chadwick, 83, of Oklahoma City, died Wednesday, March 5, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in East Amarillo Church of Christ with Cecil Burch officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery at Amarillo by N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd., in Amarillo. Mrs. Chadwick was born in Childress County. She was a baker for the Herring Hotel in the early 1950s. She organized singing groups for nursing homes for 10 years. She had been a member of East Amarillo Church of Christ for more than 30 years. She married Leroy W. Chadwick in 1953 at Clovis, N.M. He preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by a son. Survivors include a son, Bill Vinson of Oklahoma City; a brother, Marvin Davis of Oklahoma City; two sisters, Martha Vincent of Fritch and Pauline Love of Orange County, Calif.; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. Ninth Ave. Mrs. Howard was born in Childress and had been a longtime resident of Amarillo. She owned Betty's Beauty Salon and was a member of First Presbyterian Church. The body will be available for viewing at the funeral home. James Brown James "J.T." Brown, 84, of 2200 W. 7th Ave., No. 277, died Thursday, March 6, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, Bell Avenue Chapel, 5400 Bell St., with the Rev. Dean Wynn, chaplain at The Canyons Retirement Center, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. Brown was born in Cook County and had lived in Amarillo for eight years. He married Vera Brown in 1936 at Brownsville. He was a member of Tenth Street United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. He also was a member of the Texas State Water Association and the City Quarter Century Club. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeri Sue Brown. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Linda Mae Chenoweth of Montgomery and Cynthia Ann Hess of Amarillo; a brother, Wilburn Brown of Amarillo; a sister, Loy Mildred Brown of Vernon; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Fred Riley Potter Sr. Fred Riley Potter Sr., 79, a longtime resident of Amarillo, died Thursday, March 6, 1997. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Paramount Terrace Christian Church with the Rev. Roy Wheeler officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mr. Potter was born in Liberal, Kan., and moved to Amarillo in 1927. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1934 and then attended Southwestern State Teacher's College in Weatherford, Okla. In 1936, he moved back to Amarillo. He worked at Blackstone Drug and then at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center before joining the U.S. Postal Service. He married Mary Drusilla "Dru" Mutter in 1938 at Canyon. In 1942, Mr. Potter joined the Army Air Corps. He became a B-17 pilot with the 614th Squadron of the 401st Bomb Group flying in the Flying Fortress in a plane the crew dubbed "Gambler's Choice." He was one of two surviving members of the original Gambler's Choice flight crew. Following World War II, he returned to Amarillo in 1945 and resumed his position with the U.S. Postal Service. He served for a total of 40 years before retiring in 1975 as Superintendent of Mails and Director of Mail Processing. Since the mid-1960s, he and his wife have maintained residences in Amarillo and on Lake Conchas at Conchas Dam, N.M. Mr. Potter was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Conchas Baptist Mission at Conchas Dam. He was an Eagle Scout and an honorary initiate of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity at West Texas A&M University. He also was a member of High Y, the San Jacinto Masonic Lodge No. 1330, the El Paso Scottish Rite, the Khiva Shrine Temple, the Oddfellows, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1475, the American Legion and the Conchas Lions Club. He was preceded in death by a son, Fred R. Potter Jr. Survivors include his wife; a son, John Richard "Rick" Potter of Falls Church, Va.; a sister, Evelyn Potter Kruse of Amarillo; a half-brother, William "Billy" Evans of Amarillo; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Mrs. Rieck was born in Canton, Okla. She moved to Liberal in 1946 from Blaine County, Okla. She was a waitress at Sally Ann Cafe for 10 years and at the Golden Derrick Restaurant, both in Liberal. She also helped in her daughters' cafes. She married Leonard P. Rieck in 1941 at Fairview, Okla. She was preceded in death by a daughter. Survivors include her husband; three sons, Leonard D. Rieck of El Monte, Calif., Marvin L. Rieck of Hampton, Va., and Rodney L. Rieck of Amarillo; three daughters, Leona Miller of Turpin, Okla., Joan Milburn of Wichita and Linda Lunceford of Tyrone, Okla.; two brothers, Howard Warren of Liberal and Alfred Warren of Garden City; a sister, Hazel Coberly of Oklahoma City; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Dyson NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Bobby L. Dyson, 62, a former Amarillo resident, died Thursday, March 6, 1997. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today in Woodlawn Funeral Home's Chapel of Roses with the Rev. Will Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Mr. Dyson was born in Dalhart, Texas. He began playing music professionally in Amarillo. After a stint in Las Vegas playing with the Wade Ray Five, he moved to Nashville in the mid-1950s. He toured with many musicians including Jimmy Wakely, Jim Reeves and Roger Miller. His credits reportedly include Miller's "King of the Road," Charlie Rich's "Behind Closed Doors," and Dolly Parton's original 1974 version of "I Will Always Love You." Mr. Dyson was credited as the first man to play electric bass on the Grand Ole Opry. When Ralph Emery began his morning TV show in the 1960s, Dyson played bass in a three-man ensemble that eventually expanded to four pieces. Later he became a member of the Hee Haw band. Mr. Dyson was a member of the American Federation of Musicians for more than 20 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce, in 1996. Survivors include three daughters, Cherrill Long of Nashville, Becky Dyson-Emery of Amarillo and Jeri Farrell of Grand Rapids, Mich.; a brother, Tommy Dyson of Hurst, Texas; a sister, Patty Hammett of Dalhart; and three grandchildren. Visitation will be from noon to 2:30 p.m. today. Toney Ellnore Kemp PALO PINTO - Toney Ellnore Kemp, 87, died Wednesday, March 5, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Baum-Carlock-Bumgardner Chapel with the Rev. O.A. McBrayer officiating. Burial will be in Palo Pinto Cemetery. Mrs. Kemp was born in Lake Creek. She married Jack Kemp in 1929 at Plainview. He died in 1962. She had lived in the Palo Pinto area all of her life. She was a health-care provider. Survivors include a daughter, Jo Ann Stoner of Amarillo; a sister, Agnes Rabel of Dodson Prairie; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Area Lorene A. Vaughn Duncan TULIA - Lorene A. Vaughn Duncan, 81, of Stratford, a former Tulia resident, died Thursday, March 6, 1997. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Rose Hill Cemetery with Dennis Conway of the Tulia Church of Christ officiating. Arrangements are by Wallace Funeral Home. Mrs. Duncan was born in Taylor County. She was raised in Abilene and graduated from Abilene High School. She lived in Tulia and Abilene before moving to Stratford. She lived in California until 1981 and in LaGrange for 12 years. In 1993, she moved to Abilene and in 1995 to Stratford. She married John C. Vaughn in 1933 at Tahoka. He died in 1960. She married Ralph Everett Duncan in 1980 at Salinas, Calif. He died in 1993. Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Holligan of Melbourne, Fla.; two sons, Edd Vaughn of Houston and Frank Vaughn of Stratford; a sister, Lucille Lesley of Abilene; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Hershel Carthel LOCKNEY - Hershel Carthel, 86 died Thursday, March 6, 1997. Services will be at 3 p.m. today in West College and Third Street Church of Christ with Frank Duckworth and Clark Johnson, evangelists, officiating. Burial will be in Lockney Cemetery by MooreRose-White Funeral Home. Mr. Carthel was born in Lockney. He graduated from Lockney High School and attended West Texas College at Canyon. He married Octavia Collins in 1933 at Lockney. He had lived in Lockney for most of his life, except for spending three years at Tulia and 12 years at Plainview. He served for several years on the Lockney school board and the board of directors of the Lockney Co-op. He was a member of the Rotary Club and served as president of the Parent-Teachers Association. He also was president of the Floyd County Fair Board and was honored as the Citizen of the Year by the Lockney Chamber of Commerce in 1962. Mr. Carthel was a member and elder of West College and Third Street Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife; two children, Ted Carthel of Denton and Barbara Mathis of Lockney; a sister, Olga Miller of Kingsland; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Box 82, Lockney, Texas 79241. Charles D. Hatcher PAMPA - Charles D. "Charlie" Hatcher, 68, of Victoria, a former Pampa resident, died Thursday, March 6, 1997. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Fairview Cemetery with the Rev. John Glover, associate pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mr. Hatcher was born in Pampa. He was a resident of Pampa for 58 years before moving to Vernal, Utah, and then to Victoria. He was a 1946 graduate of Pampa High School. He married Mary Joyce Mobley Nolan in 1957 at Pampa. She died in 1993. He married Sue Lynn McFall Lee in 1995 at Victoria. Mr. Hatcher was an associate funeral director with Carmichael-Whatley in Pampa for 16 years before retiring in 1986. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of First Christian Church of Pampa. Survivors include his wife; a son, Charles D. "Chuck" Hatcher Jr. of Vernal; a daughter, Tami Hatcher of Rangely, Colo.; a stepdaughter, Candace Nolan Jennings of Rangely; three stepsons, Marvin Lee of Austin, John K. Lee of Bay City and Curtis Lee of Victoria; and six grandchildren. The body will be available for viewing from 9 a.m. today until service time. Margaret Riley PERRYTON - Margaret Riley, 84, died Friday, March 7, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First Christian Church with the Rev. Roy King, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home. Mrs. Riley was born in Durham, Okla. She had lived in the Perryton area since 1934, moving from Durham. She married Debs Riley in 1933 at Durham. She was an executive secretary for the American Red Cross for 20 years. She retired in 1981. Mrs. Riley helped organize the Perryton Planned Parenthood and the Child Development Center. She also helped with the Salvation Army and was a volunteer consultant with the National Red Cross. She was the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1975. She was a member of the First Christian Church, where she was a deaconess and elder and had held many offices. She also was a member of the Handbell Choir. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Gene Riley of Perryton and Bert Riley of Whitefish, Mont.; two daughters, Lyndol Taylor of Andrews and Marion Guy of Bartlesville, Okla.; a sister, Floy Williams of Edmond, Okla.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Mr. Duckworth was born in Kemp, Okla., and had been a Borger resident since 1945. He retired as a maintenance planner for Phillips Petroleum Co. after 40 years of service. He was a member of the Church of Christ. He married Mildred Overton in 1946 at Borger. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Nancy Joyce Jordan of Houston and Glynda Allene Brown of Borger; and five grandchildren. Edward Oakley PLAINVIEW - Edward "Buddy" Oakley, 48, was found Thursday, March 6, 1997. Services will be at 4 p.m. Monday in Lemons Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Mr. Oakley was born in Phoenix. He was raised in Junction City and Kansas City, Kan. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1976 with a bachelor of science degree. He joined the Army in 1977. After being discharged, he returned to Junction City and was a sales representative with KAW Furniture. He later was a sales representative for Broadway Furniture in Wichita, Kan. He moved to Plainview in 1984 and did volunteer work for Open Hand. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include a sister, Lyn Kirchhoff of Plainview. Lloyd W. Anglin WHEELER - Lloyd W. Anglin, 91, died Friday, March 7, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Toby Henson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Wheeler Cemetery by Wright Funeral Home. Mr. Anglin was born in Gassville, Ark. He moved from Vinson, Okla., to Wheeler County with his family in 1917. He married Ina Mae Walser in 1925 at Wheeler. He was a self-employed house mover. He was a Wheeler County Commissioner from 1945 to 1952. He also was a member of First Baptist Church and a 50-year member of Wheeler Masonic Lodge No. 1099. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lois Rochelle of Pampa and Billie Jean Deeds of Laureldale, Pa.; a brother, Don Anglin of San Angelo; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Arrangements are by Wasson Funeral Home in Siloam Springs, Ark. Mr. Brown was born in Anadarko. He had been a resident of Colcord since 1986, moving from Texas. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II and had retired from the Cabot Corp. He was a member of the Colcord City Council and the chamber of commerce. He was head of the Colcord Park Committee and had helped with the Colcord Library Museum. He also was a member of the Church of Christ. He married Juanita Mae Roberts in 1949. Survivors include his wife; a son, Marlin D. Brown of Amarillo; a daughter, Marla Gail Treadwell of Fayetteville, Ark.; a brother, Millard Brown of Amarillo; two sisters, Eleanor Sue Martin of Las Animas, Colo., and Billie Dale of Colcord; and four grandchildren. Mildred Marie Curtis GUYMON, Okla. - Mildred Marie Curtis, 84, died Friday, March 7, 1997. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Presbyterian church with the Rev. James A. Jacobson officiating. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery by Henson-Novak Funeral Directors. Mrs. Curtis was born in Greencastle, Ind. After spending her early years in Putnam County, Ind., she moved to the Oklahoma Panhandle in 1934 and attended college at Panhandle A&M in Goodwell. She married Robert M. "Connie" Curtis in 1936 at Putnam County. They made their home in Guymon and were active in church and civic activities. Mrs. Curtis was an active member of the Presbyterian church. She was a member of the choir, the Presbyterian Women's group and the Presbytery-Anns group. She was the society editor for the Guymon Daily News for many years and also was a rural route mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. She was a past worthy matron of the Guymon Order of the Eastern Star No. 419. She also was a longtime member of the Rose Garden Club and had been a member of the hospital auxiliary and the Macombo Dance Club. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Joy Dee Fulton of Farmington, N.M., and Robinelle Adams of Clemmons, N.C.; a son, John Curtis of Guymon; 12 sisters and brothers, Polly Coleman of Rantoul, Ill., Rex Hammond, Mary New and Nancy Fogle, all of Greencastle, Betty Warfield Neil of Deal, Md., Joe Hammond of West Monroe, La., Bill Hammond of Carmel, Ind., Helen Overton of Tucson, Ariz., Edward Hammond of Danville, Ind., Virginia Willsey of Indianapolis, Peggy Girton of Reelsville, Ind., and Cathy Landy of Oak Brook, Ill.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John Mikow of the church officiating. Burial will be in Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery by Dunn Funeral Home. Mrs. Morris was born in Tucumcari. She graduated from Tucumcari High School in 1944 and earned her bachelor of science degree in elementary education from the University of New Mexico in 1948. She was a primary school teacher for several years at Third Street, Central and Coronado schools in Tucumcari. After residing in Virginia and Maryland while her husband, Thomas G. Morris, served as a U.S. Representative from New Mexico, she and her family returned to the farm in Tucumcari in the late 1960s. Mrs. Morris served on the Tucumcari Museum Board for many years and was a lifelong member and deacon of First Presbyterian Church. She also was a member of the Tucumcari Historical Research Institute, the Wagonwheel Cowbelles, the Tucumcari Chapter D of PEO, the Tucumcari Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the Nile Yucca Temple No. 74 of Albuquerque. Survivors include her husband; a son, Tommy of Tucumcari; a daughter, Elizabeth of Tucumcari; and a granddaughter. The family requests memorials in lieu of flowers be to a favorite charity.
