McCubbin Sr. James F. McCubbin Sr., 77, of Amarillo, died Thursday, April 17, 1997. Memorial services were Saturday in N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors Pioneer Chapel, 2615 Paramount Blvd., with the Rev. Francis Crowe officiating. Cremation was by N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors. Mr. McCubbin was born in Dallas. He was an Army veteran, serving in World War II and the Korean War. He was honorably discharged as a captain. He moved to Amarillo in the mid1950s and worked for Terk Distributing for more than 35 years, serving as vice president and general manager. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ann Welnack of Napperville, Ind.; two sons, James F. McCubbin Jr. and William Lee McCubbin, both of Amarillo; a brother, retired Rear Adm. Jack McCubbin of Steilacoom, Wash.; two sisters, June Wergen of San Antonio and Margaret McCubbin of Oakland, Calif.; and four grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to the local chapters of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Allen R. Hardin Allen R. Hardin, 77, of Amarillo, died Thursday, April 17, 1997. Services were Saturday in Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 6969 E. Interstate 40, with the Rev. Marvin Gregor of First United Methodist Church of Tahoka officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Hardin was born in Clarendon and had been a longtime resident of Amarillo. He was a livestock buyer and worked for Pinkney Packing Co. for 25 years. He was a Marine veteran and had served in World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ava Marie Hardin, in 1996. Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Woodward of Decatur and Wanda Whitaker of Claude; two sisters, Billie Bain of Amarillo and Thelma Hill of Clarendon; three grandchildren; and a greatgrandchild. Leona Shoffner Leona Shoffner, 84, of Amarillo, died Thursday, April 17, 1997. Memorial services will be in Carterville, Mo., by the family. Cremation is by Memory Gardens Crematory. Local arrangements are by BlackburnShaw Funeral Directors, Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street. Ms. Shoffner was born in Letts, Iowa. She lived in Cottage Grove, Ore., and tailored women's clothing for 40 years before retiring in 1976. She was a deputy registrar and a notary public. She was a Baptist. The body will not be available for viewing. Joseph A. Warren Joseph A. "Joe'' Warren, 70, a former Amarillo resident, died Wednesday, April 16, 1997, in Ontario, Calif. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10, in Amarillo Primitive Baptist Church with Elder R.A. Tindall officiating. The body was donated to Loma Linda University School of Science in California. Arrangements are by the family. Mr. Warren was born in Dalhart. He lived in Amarillo for several years and was a cook at different restaurants before moving to California about six years ago. He served in the Navy during World War II. Mr. Hendricks was born in Dallas and had been a resident of Amarillo for 21 years. He was a tree trimmer and a Christian. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Shirlene Morton Fluke and D.L. Morton of Amarillo. Mary Elizabeth Cotter Mary Elizabeth Cotter, 79, of Dimmitt, a former Amarillo resident, died Friday, April 18, 1997. Georgia St. Mrs. Cotter was born in Broken Bow, Okla., and had lived in Amarillo since 1929. She had lived in Dimmitt with her daughter for one year. She worked for the Latour Apartments before retiring. She also had worked for Cretney Drug, Skaggs, Crysler Drug Service and Ben Franklin and was a cashier for the base exchange at Amarillo Air Force Base. She also did subsidiary nursing at Northwest Texas Hospital. She was preceded in death by three husbands, Bernie Glen Hollis in 1945, Raymond L. McCabe in 1974 and Texas Austin Cotter in 1986. Survivors include a daughter, Loretta Carol Warren of Dimmitt; a son, R.L. McCabe of Amarillo; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-greatgrandchild. Ernest Ray Christofferson Ernest Ray "Chris'' Christofferson, 45, of Amarillo, died Monday, April 14, 1997. Memorial services were Saturday at Thicket Church of God in Thicket with the Rev. Barnett officiating. Military honors were rendered by the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Liberty. Arrangements were by Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton. Mr. Christofferson was born in Alvin. He attended school in Houston, Alvin, Lancaster and White Haven, Tenn. He worked for various oil companies in Texas and also was a ranch hand in Texas and Oklahoma. He served in the Navy from 1977 to 1981, when he was honorably discharged. He had been an aviation machinist's mate third class aboard the USS Enterprise and the USS Coral Sea. He was commended as one of the outstanding members of the "Black Eagles'' afloat on the West Pacific / Indian Ocean deployment and ashore at Naval Air Station Miramar. Christofferson had lived in Amarillo about 15 years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 1475 in Amarillo. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Joan A. Morse-Froust and William B. Froust of Votaw; three sisters, Linda Sue Christofferson-Huffman of Pearland, Betsy Christofferson-Casper of New Caney and Lori Brohawn of Cleveland, Texas; and a brother, John Everette Thomas of Thicket. She attended Amarillo public schools and graduated from Amarillo High School in 1948. She attended Lyndenwood College at St. Louis and received a bachelor of arts degree in music from West Texas State University in 1959. Mrs. Capwell taught elementary music classes at Lamar and Oakdale elementary schools for 36 years before retiring in 1996. She was a member of the Texas State Teachers Association. Mrs. Capwell served on the Sanctuary and Heritage choirs at First Baptist and led singing activities in the church singles department. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlyen Capwell, in 1958. Survivors include her mother, Doris "Mama Dean'' Dean of Amarillo; and a sister, Ouida Marie Tillery of Bedford. She married Ira "Buster'' Paulk in 1938 at Dallas. He died in 1979. Mrs. Paulk was a homemaker and a member of Grand Avenue Baptist Church. She also was preceded in death by a son, Phillip Paulk. Survivors include three daughters, Barbara Ann Graham of Arlington, Linda Kay Warner of Lake Whitney and Iris Bishop of Amarillo; two sons, Michael Paulk of Cummings, Ga., and Stephen Paulk of Amarillo; a sister, Gladys Bevill of Maybank; a brother, Dick Elmore of Joshua; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He recently was employed as an engineer with Shakespeare Fiberglas in Newberry. He lived in Amarillo for 15 years and was a member of St. Stephen United Methodist Church in Amarillo. Mr. Evans was born and raised in Amarillo and graduated from Amarillo High School. He was a journeyman carpenter. He married Gerry Patterson in 1952 at Amarillo. He moved to Plainview in 1959 and was the owner and operator of Ranchers and Farmers Supply. In 1975, he began working with Nichols Tillage Tools. He was a charter member of the Golden Spread Appaloosa Horse Club and the Plainview Gun and Bass Club. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Plainview. He moved to Lubbock in 1991. Mr. Banister was born in Clovis and had been a lifetime resident of the area. He was employed by AT&SF Railroad for 18 years. He then began building bits and spurs and shoeing horses. Mrs. Henry was born in Tecumseh, Okla. She grew up in Quitaque and graduated from Quitaque High School. She married Myrett Henry in 1937 at Plainview. They moved to Wellington and then to Jackson, Miss., in 1951. They moved to Plainview in 1954. Her husband died in 1995. She helped start the Henry Tire Co. with her husband. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Harmony Sunday School Class, United Methodist Women, the Altrusa Garden Club, Good Sams Travel Club, the Senior Citizens and Meals on Wheels. She also was a Girl Scout leader and a Band Parent. Mrs. Williams was born in Rosebud. She lived in Littlefield before moving to Olton in 1972. She married John Thomas Williams in 1932 at Rosebud. He died in 1978. Burial will be at 4:30 p.m. at Citizens Cemetery at Clarendon by Minton / Chatwell Funeral Directors. Mr. Smith was born in Hereford and married Mary Hagler in 1961 at Dumas. He was a retired band director at Panhandle, where he taught for 30 years. Mr. Smith had taught band for a total of 36 years. He was a member of Phi Beta Mu and was inducted into the organization's Band Masters Hall of Fame in 1992. He was named Panhandle's Citizen of the Year in 1985. Mr. Smith also had been named Texas Teacher of the Year for 1984 and had been named PTA Teacher of the Year. Mr. Smith was named an Honorary Life Member of the Texas PTA in 1995 and was named a Classroom Terrific Teacher, Outstanding Band Achievements, in 1964. He was assistant band director at West Texas State College before moving to Panhandle. He also taught band at Hale Center, Dalhart and McLean. He was a member of Panhandle Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Mary; a daughter, Debbie Gilchrest of Memphis; a brother, Ralph Smith of Dimmitt; and one grandchild. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Lemons Memorial Chapel with Steve Briski, elder at the Lubbock Parkway Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Cemetery. Mr. Hall grew up in Benjamin and attended Benjamin schools. He married Ruth Mae Stewart in 1927. Mr. Hall worked in a hardware store before moving to Petersburg in 1942 to farm. He moved to Plainview in 1955 and retired from farming in 1978. Mr. Hall was a Jehovah's Witness and served as an elder in the Hillcrest Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Belle Tiffin of Silverton; a son, C.W. Hall Jr. of Amarillo; a sister, Letha Belle Yandell of Claypool, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. John SalazarJiminez, pastor, and Monsignor Harold Waldow, chaplain at Baptist St. Anthony's Health System - St. Anthony Campus in Amarillo officiating. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery at Nazareth by Wallace Funeral Home of Tulia. Mrs. Schulte was born in Bow Valley, Neb., and attended schools there. She married Adolph H. Schulte in 1930 at Bow Valley, and the couple moved to Tulia in 1932. He died in 1956. Mrs. Schulte had worked in the Tulia Public School System as a cafeteria worker for 23 years. She was a member of the Swisher County Senior Citizens and the Church of the Holy Spirit. Mrs. Schulte volunteered at the Swisher County Archives and was a member of the Ladies Altar Society at the Church of the Holy Spirit. She taught religion classes in Tulia and Happy for 17 years. She was named Woman of the Year by the Dioceses of Amarillo Council of Catholic Women in 1984. Mrs. Schulte was preceded in death by a son, Hubert Schulte, in 1956. Survivors include four daughters, Caroline Dietz of Happy, Mildred Callas and Rosella Curry, both of Amarillo and Betty Lou Sharp of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a son, Gerald Schulte of Tulia; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Baker, 88, died Friday, April 18, 1997. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. today at East Mound Cemetery with the Rev. Rickey Lawrence, pastor of Roaring Springs Full Gospel Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Seigler Funeral Home. Mr. Baker was born in Wynnewood, Okla. He married Mary Ruth Bollinger in 1930 at Pauls Valley, Okla. Mr. Baker was a retired farmer and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He had been a Motley County resident since 1949. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Durrell Baker of Lubbock, Kenneth Baker of Sweetwater and Morgan Baker of Lubbock; four daughters, La Von Simpson and Mary Marshall, both of Matador, Faye Mead of Wolfforth and Thelma Baker of Plainview; a brother, J.B. Baker of Choctaw, Okla.; 20 grandchildren; and 34 grandchildren. Frances Jewel Clifton CHILDRESS - Frances Jewel Clifton, 83, died Saturday, April 19, 1997. Services will be at 4 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim McCurley, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Carey Cemetery at Carey by Johnson Funeral Home of Childress. Mrs. Clifton was born in Newlin. She married Leslie H. Clifton in 1930 at Hollis, Okla. She was a housewife and a pianist for various baptist churches. Mrs. Clifton was a lifetime resident of the Childress area and a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband; three sons, Alton R. Clifton and Bill N. Clifton, both of Childress, and Jimmie J. Clifton of Mannford , Okla.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Tanner Glen Mullican PAMPA - Tanner Glen Mullican, 8, son of Jerry and Michelle Mullican, died Friday, April 18, 1997, at Amarillo. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Roger Hubbard, pastor of Bible Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Tanner was born in Pampa and was a lifelong resident. He was a member of Bible Church. Survivors include his parents; two sisters, Kellie Mullican and Brenna Mullican; and his grandparents, Mike and Marilyn Frye of Pampa and Don and Betty Mullican of Carnegie, Okla. The family will be at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. today. They suggest memorials be to the Amarillo Speech, Hearing and Language Center, 1300 Wallace Blvd., Amarillo, Texas 79106. Alpha Bownds CHILDRESS - Alpha Bownds, 75, died Friday, April 18, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Turkey Church of Christ with Stuart Smith, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery by Myers-Long Funeral Directors of Turkey. Mrs. Bownds was born in Turkey and married Clayton L. Bownds in 1992 at Quitaque. She was a homemaker and a longtime resident of Childress and Turkey. Survivors include her husband; a son, Carl Lee Bownds of Lake Jackson; four brothers, I.D. Mullin Jr., J.T. Mullin, Woodrow Mullin and Billy Joe Mullin, all of Turkey; four sisters, Mary Byers of Lakeview, Leona Coffee of Camarillo, Calif., and Bobbie Christian and Audra Mae Martin, both of Edna; two grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to the American Cancer Society or to Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice in Amarillo. Mae Magness FRIONA - Mae Magness, 90, of Tulsa, Okla., a longtime Friona resident, died Friday, April 18, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church of Friona with family members officiating. Burial will be in Friona Cemetery by Moore's Rosewood Chapel of Tulsa. Mrs. Magness was born in Guest. She received an associate's degree from Hardin-Simmons University at Abilene and worked as a teacher most of her life. She married Hubert Turner Magness in 1929 at Rule. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Magness lived in Friona for 65 years before moving to Tulsa in 1995. Survivors include two daughters, Deniese Dillon and Jacquelyn Franklin, both of Tulsa; two sisters, Vera Beil and Opal Rogers, both of Abilene; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Virginia Browder MEMPHIS - Virginia Browder, 91, died Friday, April 18, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery by Spicer Funeral Home. Ms. Browder was a native and lifelong resident of Memphis. She belonged to the 1913 Study Club, Little Theatre and Ladies Chamber of Commerce and was a founding member of the Hall County Heritage Hall in Memphis. Survivors include a sister, Margaret Foxhall of Memphis; and two nephews, Frank Foxhall of Memphis and Robert Roark of Wichita Falls. The family requests memorials be to the Fairview Cemetery Association.
