Kathryn Farris Kathryn Farris, 68, of Amarillo, former longtime Spearman resident, died Thursday, July 17, 1997. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mrs. Farris was born in Mangum, Okla. She lived in Spearman for 35 years before moving to Amarillo a year ago. She married R.T. Farris in 1945. He died in 1992. Mrs. Farris was a homemaker and a member of the Women's Bowling Association. He married Sherrie Little in 1975 at Las Vegas. He has been in the insurance business in Amarillo since 1948 and has owned and operated J. Dawson Little Insurance Company since 1981. He was a charter member of the Washington Avenue Christian Church. Myrtle Ann Savage Potter Myrtle Ann Savage Potter, 86, of Amarillo, died Friday, July 18, 1997. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Potter Memorial Cemetery, Lepanto, Ark., with the Rev. Samuel Lee Pace officiating. She married Wilkes Armstrong Potter, M.D. He died in 1970. She was an active member of the Amarillo Symphony Guild, Amarillo Art League and Beta Sigma Phi. She was a past president of the Potter-Randall Medical Alliance, which honored her in February as a 50-year member. She was also past regent and active member of the Esther McCrory chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She and her husband were charter members of the Amarillo Club and Tascosa County Club. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Potter of Amarillo and Joan Elizabeth Weise of Dallas; a sister, Ruth M. Miller of Tempe, Ariz.; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Annie Frances Perry Annie Frances Perry, 90, of Amarillo, died Thursday, July 17, 1997. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in N.S. Griggs & Sons Pioneer Chapel, 2615 Paramount Blvd., with Justin Hatley officiating. Cremation is by the funeral home. Mrs. Perry was born in Bridgeport. She had lived in Amarillo for most of her life. She was a member of the Southwest Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. She was preceded in death by her husband, S.B. Perry, in 1970. Survivors include two close friends, Doris Conlon and Elizabeth Nelson, both of Amarillo. The body will not be available for viewing. Brady L. McCoy Brady L. McCoy, 81, of Amarillo, died Friday, July 18, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Murray Gossett, associate pastor, officiating. He graduated from West Texas State College in 1935 at Canyon with a degree in government. For the next five years, he served as principal at Truscott and River Road schools. In 1943, he joined the Navy and served five years active duty. He was in the Navy Reserves for 26 years, retiring with the rank of lieutenant commander. He married Ellen Gidney in 1944 at Shelby, N.C. They moved to Amarillo in 1946. He worked as a life insurance agent and a real estate broker. He was an elder at First Presbyterian Church. He was a master appraiser and member of Amarillo South Kiwanis Club and the President's Cabinet of American General Life. He was also a past president of the Exchange Club, past commander of Naval Reserves, past commander of the American Legion and active in the Boys State program. He was a Shriner and a NRA junior rifle instructor. Survivors include his wife; a son, William Kid McCoy of Charlottesville, Va.; a daughter, Patsy McCoy of Austin; and a granddaughter. Mary Lavada Peterson PLAINVIEW - Mary Lavada Campbell Peterson, 92, a former Plainview resident, died Wednesday, July 16, 1997, in Fort Worth. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Peterson was born and raised in Bowie and attended school there. She married John Boyd Peterson in 1921 at Haskell. They lived in Winters and Coleman. They moved to Long Beach, Calif., in 1943 and to Plainview in 1945. Mr. Peterson died in 1981. Mrs. Peterson was employed by Furr's Grocery Store in Plainview until retiring in 1977. She moved to Amarillo in 1982 and to Granbury in 1990. She returned to Amarillo in 1992 and moved back to Granbury in 1993. She was a member of College Heights Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Lou Ella West of Granbury and Wanda Johnson of Amarillo; a son, Boyd Peterson of Amarillo; a brother, R.Q. Campbell of Amarillo; nine grandchildren; 19 greatgrandchildren; and 10 great-greatgrandchildren. Miro Paul Pakan McLEAN - Miro Paul Pakan, 91, died Friday, July 18, 1997. Burial will be in Pakan Cemetery by Lamb Funeral Home. Mr. Pakan was born in Shamrock and moved to McLean in 1944 from Shamrock. He operated Miro Pakan Trucking Co. for 45 years. He married Irene Budinsky in 1938 at Whiting, Ind. Mr. Pakan was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife; a son, John Pakan of Palmer, Alaska; three daughters, Dorothy Brinson of San Angelo, Ruth Jones of Parker, Colo., and Margie Eschenborg of Waco; a brother, Edward Pakan of Shamrock; two sisters, Christine Hrnciar of Shamrock and Anna Dolak of Seward, Neb.; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Glenn Bruce MEMPHIS - Glenn Bruce, 78, died Friday, July 18, 1997, in Lubbock. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church with O.K. Bowen, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery. Arrangements are by Spicer Funeral Home of Memphis. Mr. Bruce was born in Sherman. He made his home in the Memphis area for approximately 75 years, moving from Sherman as a child. He was self-employed as owner of Bruce Bros. Service Station in Memphis for many years. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a deacon of First Baptist Church. He was a member of the Memphis Volunteer Fire Department, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and a former member of the Memphis Lions Club and the Memphis Chamber of Commerce. He married Frances Leona Kinard Bruce. She died in 1993. Survivors include a son, Sam Bruce of Lubbock; a daughter, Glennda Bruce of San Antonio; three brothers, Boyce Bruce of Memphis, Noel Bruce of Temple and Ray Bruce of Amarillo; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church. She married Pedro Velasquez. He died in 1955. She was also preceded in death by a son, Reymundo Velasquez, in 1958. Survivors include six sons, Joaquin Velasquez of Sacramento, Calif., Eufemio Velasquez, Leo Velasquez and Michael Velasquez, all of Amarillo, Jesus Velasquez of Topeka, Kan., and Ray Velasquez of Pampa; four daughters, Florence Kimbley, Henrietta Yates and Susan Toten, all of Pampa, and Reynalda Salazar of Sapello, N.M.; 34 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; and 12 greatgreat-grandchildren. She had worked for the Pampa Independent School District as a secretary for many years before retiring. She married Dennis Stilwell in 1925 at Prairie Grove, Ark. He died in 1969. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Clara Hill Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 65, where she was past worthy matron, and the Doherty Auxiliary. She is survived by a niece, Susan Bailes of Oklahoma. He married Jessie Branson in 1937 at Pawhuska, Okla. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Karen Goodwin of Wheaton, Md., and Carol Nichols of Denver; a son, Bob Muns of Pampa; a sister: Eva Selken of Oklahoma City; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Bennie Lee O'Brien MULESHOE - Bennie Lee O'Brien, 80, died Friday, July 18, 1997, in Amarillo. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Oklahoma Lane United Methodist Church in Parmer County with the Rev. Nelly Landrum officiating. Arrangements are by Ellis Funeral Home of Muleshoe. Mr. O'Brien was born in Cheyenne, Okla. He and his family moved to Muleshoe in 1993, moving from Whitney. He was a retired carpenter. He was also an Army veteran, serving in World War II from 1942 to 1944. He was a member of the Oklahoma Lane United Methodist Church in Parmer County. He was also a member of the RLDS Church in Oklahoma. He married Jean Hurley in 1957 at Las Vegas. Survivors include his wife; a son, Terry Lee O'Brien of Weatherford; a daughter, Benna Ball of Whitney; and a sister, Olivea Sandburg of Las Vegas. Audrey Markham DALHART - Audrey Markham, 71, died Friday, July 18, 1997. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday in First Christian Church with Melvin Fowler officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Hass Funeral Home Inc. Mrs. Markham was born and raised in Calvin, Va. She moved to Baltimore, where she met and married John Downing. He preceded her in death. In 1945, the couple moved to Tucumcari, N.M., then later to Denver and then to Dalhart in 1952. She married Lloyd Markham in 1983. They made their home in Dalhart. He died in 1994. She worked for various restaurants in town before taking a position in sales with HWB Grocery, where she retired. Survivors include three daughters, Johnnie Ruth Bean of California, JoAnn Nigriny of Fort Meyers, Fla., and Shela Loggins of Dalhart; two sisters, Beatrice Bush of Beaver Creek, Ohio, and Francis Bohlander of Zellowood, Fla; two brothers, Sam Edens of Titusville, Fla., and Jerry Edens of Xenia, Ohio. Jan Ruth Waters Houser SAN ANGELO - Jan Ruth Waters Houser, 61, died Wednesday, July 16, 1997, in Idlewild, N.M. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 25, in Emmanuel Episcopal Church with the Rev. Mike Smith officiating. Entombment will be in the columbarium in the church garden. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Mrs. Houser was born in Canadian. She attended Canadian High School and graduated from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene with a bachelor's degree in music. She studied piano and harp at the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Mich., a branch of the University of Michigan. She taught piano and harp lessons for many years in Amarillo, Roswell, N.M., and Corpus Christi. She played the harp in the Amarillo Symphony and the Roswell Symphony. She also played for a short time with the Corpus Christi Symphony before moving to San Angelo three years ago. Mrs. Houser was the organist for the Idlewild Community Church for many years during the summer. She also served on the Idlewild board of directors. She was an active member of Church of the Good Shepherd and Emmanuel Episcopal Church in San Angelo. She participated in the choir and St. Catherine's Guild. Survivors include her husband, Philip S. Alvin Kelton Cates ULYSSES, Kan. - Alvin Kelton Cates, 53, died Saturday, July 19, 1997. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in United Methodist Church in Ulysses, with the Rev. Ron Thrasher and the Rev. Pat Thrasher officiating. Additional services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First Baptist Church at Dimmitt, Texas, with the Rev. Howard Rhoades officiating. Burial will be at Westlawn Cemetery in Dimmitt. Arrangements are by Phillips Mortuary Inc., of Ulysses. Mr. Cates was born in Hereford, Texas. He was an employee at Meza Inc., and was the superintendent of the Satanta Meza Plant. He was a veteran of Vietnam. He had moved to Ulysses, Kan., from Binger, Okla. He married Janice Lynn Baldridge in 1966 at Dimmitt. He was a member of Faith Fellowship Church. Survivors include his wife; a son, Ty of the home; two daughters, April Loftis of Ulysses, and Robin George of Hinton, Okla.; and a sister, Darlene Walters of Dimmitt. Anstine Clayton, N.M. - James L. Anstine, 73, died Saturday, July 19, 1997. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Clayton Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Billy Rammage, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Hass Funeral Directors of Clayton. Mr. Anstine was born in Cherokee, Okla. He had lived in the Wheeless, Okla., area from 1937 until he entered the Army in 1946. After his discharge in 1947, he returned to live in the Wheeless area until 1949, when he came to live in Clayton and worked on a ranch. He then moved to Albuquerque in 1952, where he worked for Duke City Molding Company for 37 years. He retired in 1988 and returned to Clayton in 1990. He married Iris Rainwater in 1953 at Albuquerque. Survivors include his wife; and two sisters, Aldean Adcox of Ukiah, Calif., and Joan Hella of Albuquerque. Dorothy Fay Slaughter CLOVIS, N.M. - Dorothy Fay Slaughter, 64, died Saturday, July 19, 1997. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Mission Garden of Memories. She married William Cherry Bishop in 1931 at Hollis, Okla. Survivors include four sons, Alvin R. Bishop of Mesquite, Texas, W.A. "Dub'' Bishop of Clovis, Benny C. Bishop of Amarillo, and Jimmy D. Bishop of Pampa; two daughters, Helen Inman of El Paso, Texas, and Judith L. Johnson of Fort Worth, Texas; a sister, Fay Revell of Memphis; 10 grandchildren; and 19 greatgrandchildren. Aurelia Acosta PORTALES, N.M. - Aurelia Acosta, 80, died Thursday, July 17, 1997. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today in St. Helen Catholic Church. Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Helen Catholic Church with Father Anthony Martinez officiating. Burial will be at Portales Cemetery. Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales, Inc. Mrs. Acosta was born in Ruidosa, Texas. She had lived her entire life in Ruidosa until 1972, when she moved to Portales. For several years she worked at Borden Peanut Mill and in the local fields. In later years, she kept house for a number of local ladies. She was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church. She married Edwardo Jimenez. She had been widowed for more than 30 years. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Maximina Mata. Survivors include seven sons, Santana Jimenez, Manuel Jimenez, Facundo Jimenez, Ramon Jimenez, Lupe Jimenez, Jesus Acosta and Samuel Acosta, all of Portales; two daughters, Virginia Castillo of Hobbs, and Dora Ramos of Portales; 47 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
