Smith Jerome "Jerry'' R. Smith, 66, of Amarillo, died Saturday, May 17, 1997. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 6969 E. Interstate 40, with Merrell Gilbert, chaplain for the Amarillo Police Department, officiating. Mr. Smith was born in Rochester, N.Y., and moved to Amarillo in 1982 from Rochester. He married Barbara Roten in 1959 at Rochester. He was preceded in death by a daughter, RuthAnne Smith, in 1991; and a son, Duane Robert Smith, in 1985. Survivors include his wife; a son, Kevin Jerome Smith of Amarillo; a daughter, Wendy Diane Smith of Amarillo; a brother, Melvin Smith of Rochester; and three grandchildren. Larry Brooks Larry Brooks, 56, of Amarillo, died Thursday, May 15, 1997. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today in Llano Cemetery with George Botello, pastor of the Living Word Church in Tucumcari, N.M., officiating. Arrangements are by N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Brooks was born in Bakersfield, Calif. He moved to Amarillo when he was a boy and had lived here most of his life. Survivors include a daughter, Terri Borden of Tucumcari; four brothers, Bob Brooks of Amarillo, Thural Brooks of Dumas, James C. Brooks of Euless and J.S. Brooks of Oregon; and two sisters, Danhe Bailey of Amarillo and Claudine Thomas of Euless. Tommie Dee Bryan Garoutte Tommie Dee Bryan Garoutte, 74, of Amarillo, died Monday, May 19, 1997. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in First Christian Church at Stratford with Dr. Syd Carnes of the church officiating. Arrangements are by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40. Mrs. Garoutte was born in Conway and was a longtime resident of Stratford. She married Virgil Garoutte in 1942. He died in 1968. She also was preceded in death by a son, Gary Garoutte, in 1996. She was a member of First Christian Church of Stratford, the Daughters of the Nile AVIHK Temple 70 and the Order of the Eastern Star Bonita Chapter 184. Survivors include two brothers, Garnett Bryan of Amarillo and Butch Bryan of Tulia; two sisters, Jean Busick of Amarillo and Katy Darnell of Panhandle; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Elsewhere Ferol Beatrice Barrett KILGORE - Ferol Beatrice Barrett, 96, died Saturday, May 17, 1997. Arrangements are by Lakeview Funeral Home. Mrs. Barrett was born in Webb City, Mo. She had been a homemaker most of her life and was a member of Chandler Street Church of Christ and Alpine Church of Christ. Her husband, Harry E. Barrett, died in 1971. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara York of Kilgore and Delma Brazell of Bozeman, Mont.; 14 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and eight great-greatgrandchildren. New Mexico Modean Walden ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Modean Walden, 81, died Saturday, May 17, 1997. Mrs. Walden was born in Hillsboro, Texas. She moved to Albuquerque in 1947 from Clovis. She was a member of Blake Baptist Church. She married Emery Elva Walden in 1944 at Portales. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Donna Walden of the home; a son, Bobby Walden of Los Lunas; a sister, Betty Beaver of Clovis; two brothers, Calvin Reid of Clovis and Bill Reid of Kansas City, Kan.; and a grandson. Frank Ernest Woods CLOVIS, N.M. - Frank Ernest Woods, 65, a former longtime Clovis resident of Moreno Valley, Calif., died Dec. 5, 1996 at Orange, Calif. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Steed-Todd Funeral Home Chapel at Clovis. Burial was Dec. 10, 1996, in the Loma Vista Cemetery at Brea, Calif. Mr. Woods was born in Ruth. He lived in Clovis most of his life before moving to Moreno Valley in 1994. He graduated from Clovis High School in 1949. Carter Lee Veazey CLOVIS, N.M. - Carter Lee Veazey, 80, died Saturday, May 17, 1997. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Greg Armstrong officiating. Burial will be in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens by Steed-Todd Funeral Home. Mr. Veazey was born in Van Alstyne, Texas. He graduated in 1937 from Amarillo High School at Amarillo. He married Althea Kunkel in 1938 at Amarillo. They lived in California from 1941 until returning to Amarillo in 1946. They moved to Guymon, Okla., in 1951 and to Clovis in 1952. He worked for Ford Motor Co., for 30 years before retiring in 1982. He was president of the Babe Ruth Baseball League. He also was a Cub Scout Master and president of Methodist Men. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church since 1952 and had been a member of the Methodist church for 49 years. Survivors include his wife; a son, David Veazey of Charleston, W.Va.; a daughter, Phyllis of Stinnett, Texas; a brother, Alvis Veazey of Amarillo; four grandchildren; and a great-grandson. The family suggests memorials be to Trinity United Methodist Church, 1320 W. 21st, Clovis. Annie M. Marquez TUCUMCARI, N.M. - Annie M. Marquez, 88, died Friday, May 16, 1997. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Monday in Dunn Funeral Home Memorial Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. today in St. Anne's Catholic Church by the Rev. John C. Daniel. Burial will be in Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery. Miss Marquez was born in Bernal and had lived in Tucumcari for 60 years. For many years, she was employed as a housekeeper. She was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church. Survivors include a brother, Andy Marquez of Tucumcari; and a sister, Deluvina Trujillo of Tucumcari. The body will be available for viewing at the funeral home until service time. Oklahoma Emma Viola Conger GUYMON, Okla. - Emma Viola Conger, 87, a longtime Texas County resident, died Sunday, May 18, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Henson-Novak Funeral Directors Chapel with the Rev. Richard T. Powell officiating. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery. Mrs. Conger was born in Okeene and raised in the Enid area. She married Floyd Conger in 1929 at Drummond. After their marriage, they moved to the Eva community where they farmed for many years. In 1977 they moved to Guymon. She was a member of the James Church of God and had attended the Church of the Nazarene in Guymon since 1977. Mr. Conger died in 1987. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Lavake of Guymon and Arletta Shores of Eva; two sons, Charles Conger of Independence, Mo., and Dennis Conger of Andover, Kan.; three sisters, Nell Gardner of Phoenix, Mary Alice Weisner of Vallejo, Calif., and Bertha Reyner of Redding, Calif.; two brothers, Lester Myers of Arkansas and Bill Myers of Guymon; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and until service time Wednesday. The family will be at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Area Petronilo Ortiz LOCKNEY - Petronilo Ortiz, 84, died Sunday, May 18, 1997. Services were at 2 p.m. Monday in Primera Iglesia Bautista Church with the Rev. Pedro Villareal officiating. Burial was in Lockney Cemetery by MooreRose-White Funeral Home. Mr. Ortiz was born in Sain Alto, Zacatecas, Mexico. He moved to Floyd County from El Paso in 1963. He was a retired farmer. He married Amalia Ortiz in 1947 at Mexico. Survivors include his wife; a son, Joe Ortiz of Floydada; a brother, Guillermo Ortiz of Mexico; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Hospice of the Plains, 7109 Olton Road, Plainview, Texas 79072. Truman Attaway PAMPA - Truman Attaway, 85, died Sunday, May 18, 1997. Services will be at 4 p.m. today in Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Rick Parnell, associate pastor of Central Baptist Church, and the Rev. Darrell Monday, pastor of Central Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Mr. Attaway was born in Pauls Valley, Okla., and moved to Pampa in 1929. He worked for Southern Petroleum Oil Co. for 33 years. He also was a cable tool driller for 15 years and later worked for Wayne Brooks Electric for five years. He was a member of the Top O' Texas Rodeo Association and Top O' Texas Masonic Lodge 1381 AF&AM. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Khiva Temple of the Shrine in Amarillo and the Lubbock Scottish Rite Consistory. He was a Demolay Dad and an honorary Gray County deputy. He was a member of Central Baptist Church. He married Lucille Hulsey in 1934 at Pampa. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Leona Willis of Pampa and Murline Stephens of Oklahoma City; a brother, Leck Attaway of Bella Vista, Ark.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Vera Wilbon PAMPA - Vera Wilbon, 77, died Sunday, May 18, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in St. Mark's CME Church with the Rev. I.L. Patrick, pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church, the Rev. Vurn Martin, pastor of New Hope Baptist Church, and Frankie Lemons, minister of Oklahoma Street Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery by CarmichaelWhatley Funeral Directors. Ms. Wilbon was born in Mangum, Okla. She had been a resident of Pampa for the past 39 years, moving from Amarillo. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Jo Ann King of Pampa; five sons, Herbert Wilbon, Donny Wilbon, Freddie Wilbon and Ronny Wilbon, all of Pampa, and Billy Wilbon of Houston; a sister, Willie Fred Platt of Phoenix; a brother, Herbert Smith of Phoenix; 18 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Oma Augusta Hakencamp BORGER - Oma Augusta Hakencamp, 94, of Shawnee, Okla., a former Borger resident, died Sunday, May 18, 1997. Services will be at 3 p.m. today in Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Leonard Forsythe, pastor of Bible Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Good Shepherd at Westlawn Memorial Park. Mrs. Hakencamp was born in Wann, Okla. She lived in Borger for 46 years before moving to Shawnee in 1986. She owned and operated Hakencamp Greenhouse for 20 years. She was a member of First Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Hakencamp, in 1960; and a son, Howard Douglas Hakencamp, in 1996. Survivors include a daughter, Arkle Anderson of Shawnee; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three greatgreat-grandchildren. Orva Leone Babbitt McLEAN - Orva Leone Babbitt, 98, died Saturday, May 17, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Thacker Haynes, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery by Lamb Funeral Home. Mrs. Babbitt was born in Bryson, Jack County. She moved to McLean from New Mexico in 1922. She married Loren H. Babbitt in 1917 at Lawton, Okla. He preceded her in death. She was a Presbyterian. Survivors include three daughters, Lorene Shults of Albuquerque, N.M., Edna Leona Snyder of McLean and Kay Simons of Atworth, Ga.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-greatgrandchildren. Arthur L. Turpin PLAINVIEW - Arthur L. Turpin, 72, died Sunday, May 18, 1997. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Park Cemetery at Dalhart with the Rev. Mitch Wilson, pastor of First Baptist Church of Shallowater, officiating. Arrangements are by Lemons Funeral Home. Mr. Turpin was born in Dustin, Okla., and grew up and attended school at Dalhart. He farmed and ranched in Dalhart. He moved to Plainview in 1958 and worked at Green Machinery and Pioneer Seed Co. He moved to Dumas in 1972 and to Hart in 1974. He returned to Dalhart in 1978 and farmed there until retiring in 1990. He returned to Plainview in 1991. He attended the Baptist church and was a lifetime member of Plainview Rodeo Association. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mona Marie Turpin, and a son, Jody Carl Turpin. Survivors include four sons, Allyn McQuarie of San Diego, Danny Turpin of Tijeras, N.M., David Turpin of Plainview and Johnny Turpin of Shallowater; two sisters, Unie Matthews of Amarillo and Ludy Rogers of Lubbock; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Eleanor Winkler PAMPA - Eleanor Winkler, 75, died Monday, May 19, 1997. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors Colonial Chapel with Bill Williams and Clarence Mounce of a non-denominational church officiating. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery at Hereford. Mrs. Winkler was born in Hereford. She married Elmer Winkler in 1938 at Clovis, N.M. He died in 1965. She moved to Pampa in 1987 from Hereford. She was involved in many activities throughout her life including working as a home health assistant and quilting. She was a volunteer for Hospice of the Panhandle and Coronado Nursing Home. Mrs. Winkler was a member of a nondenominational church. Survivors include two sons, Max Winkler of Amarillo and Keith Winkler of Pampa; a daughter, Linda Hoff of Round Rock; two sisters, Dorothy Wright of Amarillo and Marsha Woolley of Placentia, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and nine greatgrandchildren.
