Mr. Goff was born in Tell and moved to Amarillo in 1953. He was a union boilermaker employed by Boilermaker Union Local No. 531 before retiring in 1992. He served in the Army and was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. He also was a member of Boilermaker Union Local No. 531 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He married Betty Jo Morley in 1978 at Amarillo. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Rodney Luke of Amarillo, Stanton Luke of Alva, Okla., and William K. Brewer of Las Vegas; three daughters, Billie Fay Wood of Decaturville, Tenn., and Sandra Jean Williams and Tammy Marie Wanderschied, both of Highland Ranch, Colo.; two brothers, Cecil Goff of Tell and James R. Goff of Childress; two sisters, Nettie Ruth Gambol of Tell and Joan Shelton of Childress; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be in lieu of flowers to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Marvin J. Byler Marvin J. Byler, 74, of San Antonio, a former resident of Amarillo, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997. Mr. Byler was born in Claude and was a graduate of Claude High School. He was a former resident of Amarillo. He was a mechanic and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. He married Margaret Wright in 1945 at Amarillo. She died in 1971. He also was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Marvin Byler, in 1946. He farmed in Abernathy for many years and was a Greyhound bus driver for more than 15 years. He married Murtice Carroll in 1940 at Plainview. Mr. Nesbitt lived in Amarillo and Abernathy before moving to Fort Worth in 1994. New Mexico Carl Joseph Liggett CLOVIS, N.M. - Carl Joseph Liggett, 72, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Evergreen Cemetery at Effingham, Kan., with Duane Horton officiating. Military honors will be by the Whiteman Air Force Base Honor Guard. Arrangements are by Muffley Funeral Home. Mr. Liggett was born in Muscotah, Kan. He entered the Navy in 1943 and served as a Gunners Mate Second Class. He was discharged in 1947. In 1951, he entered the Air Force and retired as a master sergeant in 1974. He served during World War II and the Korean War and served two tours in Vietnam. He married Luigia "Gina" Anna Faldon in 1965 at Aviano, Italy. They moved to Clovis in 1970. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3280 in Clovis. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Steve Liggett of Arvada, Colo., Loren Liggett of Atchinson, Kan., and Joe Liggett of Clovis; four daughters, Jamie Lewman of Cummings, Kan., Teresa Liggett of Albuquerque, Donna Vernon of Clovis and Joanna Crane of Carlsbad; a brother, Gene Liggett of Atchinson; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Walter Edgar Hunter CLAYTON, N.M. - Walter Edgar "Ed" Hunter, 52, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997. Services will be at 11 a.m. today in Clayton Gospel Church with the Rev. Ron Ethridge, pastor, and the Rev. Wilfred Carrasco, pastor of Clayton House of Prayer, officiating. Burial will be in Clayton Memorial Cemetery by Hass Funeral Directors. Mr. Hunter was born in Clinton, Okla., and raised in Putman, Okla. When he was 9, his family moved to Dalhart, Texas. He served in the Army for more than seven years, serving in Korea and Vietnam. He was discharged in 1971, when he returned to Dalhart. He lived in the Texas and Oklahoma panhandle areas until moving to Clayton in 1986. Mr. Hunter married LuAnn Romero in 1972. Survivors include his wife; a son, Heath Hunter of Perryton, Texas; two daughters, Mandie Hunter and Christina Hunter, both of Clayton; his mother, Lavona "Shorty" Hunter of Dalhart; a sister, Marlyne Walters of Elk City, Okla.; three brothers, J.D. Hunter of Taloga, Okla., Jerry Hunter of Dalhart and Tommy Hunter of Perryton; and two grandchildren. Dot H. Couzens CLAYTON, N.M. - Dot H. Couzens, 93, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997. Mrs. Couzens was born in Miami, Texas, and had been a resident of Union County since 1907. She married Philip Edgar Couzens Jr. in 1931. He died in 1983. Survivors include two nieces and three nephews. Kurt Calvin Hennig CLOVIS, N.M. - Kurt Calvin Hennig, 65, died Friday, Dec. 19, 1997. Oklahoma Lelia Melton Freeman COLEMAN, Okla. - Lelia Melton Freeman, 88, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Henson-Novak Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Odie Nunley, pastor of First Baptist Church in Hardesty, officiating. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery. Mrs. Freeman was born in Wilson County, Tenn. She moved to Texas County in 1918 with her family. They lived in Hitchland. She later lived in Guymon and Texhoma. She was a bookkeeper for more than 30 years, working at the Hitchland Elevator and for the Ideal Grocery store in Guymon. She had lived in Coleman the past several years. She married James B. Melton in 1932 at Guymon. He died in 1965. Survivors include two daughters, Lue Dean Delton and Sue Robinette, both of Coleman; a sister, Elizabeth Brooks of Goodwell; a brother, Hollis Quesenbury of Hardesty; six grandsons; and 11 greatgrandchildren. Lola Hughes TEXHOMA, Okla. - Lola Hughes, 61, of Sunray, Texas, a former Texhoma resident, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church of Texhoma with the Rev. Mike Dumler, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Lane Memorial Cemetery in Sunray by Dawson-Welch Funeral Home of Texhoma. Mrs. Hughes was born in Oakwood and went to school in Margan and Blair. She spent most of her adult life in the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles and southwest Kansas. She was a counselor at Panhandle Treatment Center in Guymon from 1978 to 1992. She was a case manager for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in Amarillo until her retirement in 1996. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Texhoma. She married Joe Yates in 1954 at Hereford, Texas. He died in 1960. In 1982, she married Fred G. Hughes in Sherman County, Texas. She also was preceded in death by a son, Jesse Lee, in 1989. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Jennifer Williams of Hooker; three sons, George Yates of Hobart, Jeff Yates of Ulysses, Kan., and James Unruh of Copeland, Kan.; three stepchildren, Lorrie Hughes of Ouray, Colo., Dorrie Hughes of Liberal, Kan., and Jodie Goracke of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Beverly Gore of Texhoma; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Texhoma Cemetery by Dawson-Welch Funeral Home. Mrs. Hamilton was born in Cordova, Ala., and moved to Texhoma when she was 16. She taught second grade in the Texhoma Grade School for 25 years. She was a member of the Oklahoma Teachers Association, the Texas County Retired Teachers Association and the Church of Christ. She married Bob Hamilton in 1948 at Dalhart, Texas. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Christie Callaway and Carol Coble, both of Texhoma; a son, Bobby Hamilton of Hobbs, N.M.; a sister, Nada Beck of Dumas, Texas; a brother, Gene Swindle of Birmingham, Ala.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Voiles, 41, a former Hooker, Okla., resident, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997. Services were at 10 a.m. Monday in United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Cook officiating. Burial was in Hooker Cemetery by Roberts Brothers Funeral Home. Mr. Voiles was born in Liberal, Kan. He attended Hooker public schools, graduating in 1974. He attended the University of Oklahoma and earned a bachelor of science degree. He then graduated from the Oklahoma University School of Law with an additional summer of graduate studies at Oxford University. He began his professional career with the law firm of Moyers, Martin, Santee, Imel and Tetrick in Tulsa. He then passed the California Bar Exam and joined a law firm in Los Angeles, specializing in medical malpractice defense. In 1995, he became a partner of the law firm of Schmid and Voiles. Mr. Voiles was a member of the American Bar Association and the California Bar Association. He was selected Attorney of the Year by the associates of his law firm. Survivors include his life partner, Kevin Cronin of Los Angeles; his father, J.D. Voiles of Hooker; a brother, John David Voiles of Fort Collins, Colo.; and three sisters, Rebecca Rae Montgomery of Fort Collins, and Barbara Esther Seawright and Zella Bess Martens, both of Hooker. He moved to Bridgeport nine years ago. He married Mildred Novelle Haskell in 1933 at Sayre, Okla. She died in 1993. He was an engine operator for Skelly Oil Co. for many years before retiring in 1982. He was a Marine veteran of World War II. He was a member of the First United Methodist churches of Pampa and Bridgeport. Survivors include a brother, Ralph Shannon of Oklahoma City; and a sister, Bonnie Hutson of Odessa. Gerald Ellison Thompson BRYAN - Gerald Ellison "Tommy" Thompson, 88, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in First United Methodist Church of Kermit. Arrangements are by Cooper Funeral Home of Kermit. Mr. Thompson was born in Thompson's Gin, Limestone County. He had been married to Louise Baird for 62 years. He served in Texas public schools for 43 years, two years at Pecos and 41 years at Kermit, where he served for 26 years as superintendent of schools. He also served as president of the Texas State Teachers Association and as chairman of the Texas Public School Administrative Council. He was a member of the executive committee of the University Interscholastic League. Mr. Thompson was a past officer in the Texas Retired Teachers Association and was a member of the board of directors for the education service center for many years. A veteran of World War II, he was discharged in 1945 at the rank of lieutenant commander of the Naval Reserve. He received his degree in 1932 from Trinity University. He received a master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1942. Mr. Thompson was a lifelong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America and received the Silver Beaver Award. He also belonged to the Lions Club for more than 55 years and had served in numerous leadership roles. He was a 32nd Degree Mason. He had been a member of First United Methodist Church of Kermit for 51 years where he was a lay leader, Sunday School superintendent and chairman of the building committee. Survivors include his wife, Louise; two sons, Barry B. Thompson of College Station and G. Dan Thompson of Dallas; two brothers, L. Paul Thompson of Carlsbad, N.M., and Robert Dan Thompson of Thompson's Gin and Fond Du Lac, Wis.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Simmerman was born in Brokenbow, Neb., and graduated from Amarillo High School in Amarillo in 1932. He had been a resident of Los Angeles for almost 60 years. Mr. Simmerman had been the manager of Malinow-Silverman Funeral Home for 40 years. He was a Mason for 40 years and a member of Welsh Presbyterian Church. He married Bessie Lee Gowdy in 1938 in Amarillo. Survivors include his wife; a son, John D. Simmerman of Denver; a daughter, Kenda Smith of San Diego; two granddaughters; and a great-grandson. Jud Wilhite, pastor of Paramount Terrace Christian Church of Amarillo, officiating. Burial will be in Littlefield Memorial Park by Hammons Funeral Home. Mr. Lumsden was born at Chico. He married Betty McElhaney in 1945 at Bowie. He then moved to the Littlefield area. He farmed and was involved in ownership of a cotton gin from 1949 until his retirement in 1985. Mr. Lumsden served in the 397th Bomb Squadron of the Army Air Corps during World War II and flew 65 missions over Germany and France. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife; a son, Mike Lumsden of Lake Jackson; three daughters, Judy Bolton of Sundown, Carolyn Williams of Amarillo and Sarah Carswell of Kingwood; a brother, John Lumsden of Clyde; a sister, Robbie Crawford of Whitesboro; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She married Rafael Garcia in 1922. They moved to Stratford that same year. They moved to Dalhart in 1953. She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and the Decolores at St. Anthony's. Survivors include four sons, Ralph Garcia and Steve Garcia, both of Dalhart, Alphonso Garcia of Denver and Manuel Garcia of El Dorado, Kan.; two daughters, Eva Gallegos of El Paso and Elvira Sue White of Hobbs, N.M.; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Ernestine Edwards Rowland QUANAH - Ernestine Edwards Rowland, 71, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, in Altus, Okla. Services will be at 1 p.m. today in the Church of Christ with Lyndal Werner officiating. Burial will be in Quanah Memorial Park by Price-Jackson Funeral Home. Mrs. Rowland was born in the Holeyann community. She lived in Hardeman County all of her life. She married Eugene Rowland in 1946 at Quanah. She had been a nurse's aide for many years for the Hardeman County Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Church of Christ. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mr. Casey was born in Seminole, Okla. He moved to Pampa in 1926 from Hominy, Okla. He was a 1929 graduate of Pampa High School. He received a bachelor of arts degree from North Texas State University at Denton. He served five years in the Army during World War II and was a captain in the anti-aircraft division in the European Theater of War. He was a public accountant with Nenstiel and Doggett for 44 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. Mr. Casey married Jean Paxson in 1948 at Pampa. He married Lois Hamilton in 1935. Lorene Tallet PLAINVIEW - Lorene Tallet, 84, died Monday, Dec. 22, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Lemons Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Mrs. Tallet was born in Buffalo, Mo. In 1914, she moved to Miami, Texas, where she grew up and graduated from high school. She moved to Dayton after graduating and to Plainview in 1948. She worked at several places including the Senior Citizens Center. She was a member of First Christian Church. She married Earl Tallet in 1934 at Dayton, Ohio. He died in 1980. Survivors include a daughter, Laveda Anderson of Plainview; two sons, Del Tallet of Houston and Verrell Tallet of Plainview; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Trinidad Ferdin PLAINVIEW - Trinidad Ferdin, 76, died Monday, Dec. 22, 1997. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today in Lemons Funeral Home Memorial Chapel. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Theresa Catholic Church in Hale Center with the Rev. Martin Pena, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Hale Center Cemetery at Hale Center. Mrs. Ferdin was born and raised in Kennedy and later moved to Piedras Negras. She also lived in San Antonio and Hale Center before moving to Plainview. She married Pablo Ferdin in 1942 at San Antonio. He died in 1975. Survivors include five daughters, Jacinta Isaquire, Guadalupe Ferdin and Sylvia Ortegon, all of Plainview, Dorothy Chavez of San Antonio and Eva Ferdin of South Bend, Ind.; three sons, David Ferdin, John Ferdin and Richard Ferdin, all of Plainview; a brother, Mingo Flores of South Bend; a sister, Julia Torres of San Antonio; 37 grandchildren; and 78 great-grandchildren. Manuel DeHoyos DUMAS - Manuel DeHoyos, 70, of Muleshoe, a former Dumas resident, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today in Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard Scully, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Dumas Cemetery by Morrison Funeral Directors. Mr. DeHoyos was born in Bryan. He was a longtime Dumas resident before moving to Muleshoe two years ago. He was a former employee for the city of Dumas. He retired from Phillips Petroleum. He was an Army veteran and a member of Immaculate Concepcion Catholic Church in Muleshoe. Mr. DeHoyos was instrumental in the construction of the original Babe Ruth Park. He was preceded in death by a son, Ricardo DeHoyos, in 1962; and by a daughter, Yolando Kay DeHoyos, in 1954. Survivors include two sons, Martin DeHoyos of Abilene and Mario DeHoyos of Muleshoe; two brothers, Jesus DeHoyos of Allende, Mexico, and Anselmo DeHoyos of Rio Bravo, Mexico; a sister, Nena Martinez of Saltillo, Mexico; three foster brothers, Raymond Yell of Midland, Joe Yell of Guymon, Okla., and Bill Yell of Houston; and seven grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to the Alzheimer's Panhandle Chapter, 2200 W. 7th Ave., Amarillo, Texas 79106. Gracie E. Bramlet PLAINVIEW - Gracie E. Bramlet, 94, died Friday, Dec. 19, 1997. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in First Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Shawn Fouts, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park by Wood-Dunning Funeral Home. Mrs. Bramlet was born in Birmingham, Ala. She moved from Arkansas to Plainview in 1916. She was a homemaker and a member of First Church of the Nazarene. She married Charlie E. Bramlet in 1922 at Plainview. He died in 1975. She also was preceded in death by two sons, Melvin Bramlet and Clarence Bramlet. Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn Smith of Pearce-Sunizona, Ariz., and Dorothy Williams of Wichita Falls; two sons, Ottice Bramlet of Independence, Mo., and Eddie Bramlet of Plainview; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Ruth McCarver Payton GROOM - Ruth McCarver Payton, 74, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Groom Church of Christ with Kent Watson and Alfred White, both of the Claude Church of Christ in Claude, officiating. Burial will be in Groom Community Cemetery by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 Bell St., in Amarillo. Mrs. Payton was born in Wellington. She graduated from Hollis High School in Hollis, Okla. She married Frank Donald Payton in 1950 at Hollis. She retired as a dietitian. She was a member of the Groom Church of Christ. She moved to Groom in 1959 from Pantex. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Payton of Groom and Ricky Payton of Woodward, Okla.; a daughter, Josephine Webb of Clarendon; a brother, JR McCarver of Altus, Okla.; two sisters, Juanita Grant of Bristow, Okla., and Lorene Singleton of Baton Rouge, La.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The family requests memorials be to the High Plains Children's Home.
