Watson Sydney "Syd'' H. Watson, 92, of Amarillo, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997. Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery at Dallas. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. in Chapel East in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Leggett officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home Inc., 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Watson was born in Danville, Ark. He attended Arkansas Tech at Russellville, Ark., from 1926 to 1929. He graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1930 and received a master's degree in agronomy in 1931. He married Marydell Ward in 1931 at Russellville. They moved to Tishomingo, Okla., where Mr. Watson taught agronomy at Murray State College until 1935. In 1936, he joined the Soil Conservation Service at Salina, Kan., where he was in charge of the range and pasture division. He was transferred to Amarillo in 1939 and was in charge of regrassing air fields in the Texas Panhandle, Oklahoma and Kansas, eastern Colorado and New Mexico after the Dust Bowl. In 1942, Mr. Watson entered the Army Air Corps to supervise dust control of various air fields. He was transferred to Randolph Air Field at San Antonio and, a short time later, was transferred to Dallas with the Army Engineers as a liaison officer in charge of air field construction. He retired from the Air Force in 1947 as a colonel and remained in Dallas as division agronomist for the Corps of Engineers. He retired in 1963. Mr. Watson moved to Amarillo in 1992. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Amarillo. He had been a member of Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church in Dallas for many years. He delivered for Meals on Wheels. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1993 and a son, John Ward, in 1981. Survivors include a daughter, DeDe Baum of the home; friend, Art Spikes of Amarillo; four sisters, Eva Lucas of California, Estelle Wilson and Johnnie Cohen, both of Little Rock, Ark., and Helen Blanton of Dallas; a brother, Wilbur Watson of Fayetteville, Ark.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Robert Sunray Brown Robert Sunray Brown, 66, of Amarillo, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997. Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. today in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary's Catholic Church by Monsignor Francis A. Smyer, the Rev. Ken Keller and the Rev. Terry Burke. Mr. Brown was one of the first babies born in Sunray. He graduated from Amarillo High School and moved to San Jose, Calif., in 1950, to attend San Jose State University. He was an architect and builder and spent most of his career in northern California, where he was active in the design and construction of many churches, highrise apartment buildings and custom homes. Mr. Brown returned to Amarillo in 1977, when he became involved in cattle raising operations. He was an active member of the Loyal Order of the Moose and served as president of the state Moose organization in Texas. He also was active in the Elks Club and the Lions Club. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Amarillo. Mr. Brown married D. Mickey Browning in 1975 at Reno, Nev. Survivors include his wife; 10 children; two brothers, George Brown of Dumas and Burdett Brown of Amarillo; and 14 grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to Crown of Texas Hospice, 1000 S. Jefferson St., Amarillo, Texas 79101. Rex Milton Fike Rex Milton Fike, 60, of Amarillo, died Friday, Oct. 17, 1997. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Liberty Church with the Rev. Jay Roberson, pastor, officiating. Cremation arrangements were by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mr. Fike was born in Woodward, Okla. He graduated from Perryton High School in 1955 and from West Texas State University in 1959. He received a master's degree in language from the University of Texas at Austin. He taught foreign language at West Texas and at the Shriners Institute in Kerrville. He was an eligibility specialist for the Texas Department of Human Resources before retiring. Mr. Fike had been a resident of Amarillo for two months. Survivors include two brothers, George Fike of Amarillo and David Fike of Optima, Okla.; and a sister, Susan Fike of Perryton. The body will not be available for viewing. Farest Blount Farest Blount, 87, of Amarillo, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 6969 E. Interstate 40, with the Rev. Warren Stowe officiating. Entombment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery East Mausoleum. Mr. Blount was born in Rice. He moved to Amarillo in 1955 from Tulsa, Okla. He was an agent for Texaco before retiring in 1992. He served with the Army Air Corps in Italy during World War II. He married Geraldine "Billie'' Hodge in 1938 at Rice. She died in March. Survivors include a son, Lynn "Barney'' Blount of Lamesa; a daughter, Pam Blaine of Plano; a sister, Irene Armstrong of Dallas; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice and Life Enrichment Center. David H. Gause David H. Gause, 67, of Amarillo, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Second Baptist Church with Dr. Charles Jones of the church and the Rev. B.L. Davis, retired Baptist minister, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors, Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street. Mr. Gause was born in Stamford. He moved to Amarillo in 1947 from Anson. He was employed with the Amarillo Independent School District for 11 years, retiring in 1994. He married Wanda McNett in 1948. Mr. Gause was a member of Second Baptist Church. He was a Mason and past Master of San Jacinto Masonic Lodge No. 1330. He also was a member of the Scottish Rite. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Mike Gause, Tim Gause and Danny Gause, all of Amarillo; a daughter, Melissa Hess of Lubbock; a brother, William Gause of Austin; two sisters, Ellan Davis of Amarillo and Dixie Howe of Cleburne; and six grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Clarence Chambers Clarence "Connie'' Chambers, 59, of 1502 Sundown Lane, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Rector Funeral Home Chapel, 2800 S. Osage St., with the Rev. Marvin James, pastor of Lake Tanglewood Community Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Chambers was born in Peach Bottom, Pa. He moved to Amarillo more than 40 years ago. He was a cowboy for the Amarillo Stockyards for 46 years. He was an Army veteran and a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. He married Jeanne Schick in 1977 at Clovis, N.M. Survivors include his wife; two daughters; a son; three stepchildren; and two grandsons. The family will be at 1502 Sundown Lane. Charlotte Dillow Charlotte Dillow, 80, of Amarillo, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. today in Memorial Park Cemetery with Johnny Griffith officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 Bell St. Mrs. Winn was born in Ellwood, Ind. She moved from Wickenburg, Ariz., to Amarillo in 1989. She was a homemaker. She married Charles O. Winn in 1954 at Reno, Nev. He died in 1988. Survivors include a brother, Ralph Jones of Hemet, Calif.; and two sisters, Ruth Sims of Amarillo and Marion Van Sant of Oroville, Calif. New Mexico Fannie Frances Beard CLAYTON, N.M. - Fannie Frances Beard, 92, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997, in Springer. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Roy Cemetery at Roy with the Rev. Bill Bowman of Tucumcari officiating. Arrangements are Hass Funeral Directors Inc. Mrs. Beard was born in Lela, Texas, and moved to Gladstone by covered wagon in 1915. She attended school at Gladstone and graduated in 1926 from the Salt City Business College at Hutchinson, Kan. She was employed in Chicago for the Watling Manufacturing Co. that produced "penny weight'' scales. Mrs. Beard moved back to New Mexico in 1933. She married Floyd W. "Bub'' Beard in 1936 at Raton. They farmed and ranched in the Gladstone community until 1967, when they retired and moved to Farley, N.M. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993. Survivors include a son, Earl Beard of Gladstone; and a sister, Sue Headrick of Pueblo, Colo. Canyon Richard Bryce Warren Richard Bryce Warren, 46, of Ruidoso, N.M., a former Canyon resident, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church of Canyon with Dr. Strauss Atkinson, pastor emeritus, officiating. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery by Brooks Funeral Directors of Canyon. Mr. Warren was born in Canyon. He graduated from Canyon High School in 1968 and from West Texas State University in 1972 with a bachelor of science degree. He attended Dallas Institute of Funeral Service and graduated from Pierce Mortuary School of Houston in 1974. Mr. Warren worked for BlackburnShaw Funeral Directors and Memorial Park Funeral Home, both in Amarillo. In 1984, he began working for Rix Funeral Home in Lubbock. He married Mollie Sewright in 1983 at Amarillo. In 1986, they moved to Ruidoso, where Mr. Warren worked for LaGrone Funeral Chapel. He began working in the health-care industry in 1988. Mr. Warren was a member of First Baptist Church of Canyon. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Sarah Warren Williams of Amarillo, and Rachel Warren and Lydia Warren, both of Ruidoso; his parents, Bernard and Martha Warren of Canyon; and a brother, John A. Warren of Tulsa, Okla. The family requests memorials be to Dreamland Cemetery, P.O. Box 38, Canyon, Texas 79015. Area Naomi McAfee QUANAH - Naomi McAfee, 77, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Price-Jackson Funeral Home Chapel with Lyndal Werner officiating. Burial will be in Quanah Memorial Park. Mrs. McAfee was born in Colleyville and had lived in Hardeman County for 40 years. She moved to the Quanah area from Vernon. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ. She married Ishmael McAfee in 1935 at Hollis, Okla. He died in 1974. She also was preceded in death by a son, Michael V. McAfee. Survivors include four daughters, Amelia Blenkin of Granbury, Janell Rayburn of Wichita Falls, Carolyn Hammons of Fort Worth and Mary Etta England of Temple, Okla.; two sons, Kenneth Ray McAfee of Quanah and Charles Wayne McAfee of Fort Worth; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Terra Adella Putman CLARENDON - Terra Adella Putman, 96, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church with Dr. James Bell, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Rowe Cemetery at Hedley by Robertson Funeral Directors Inc. Mrs. Putman was born in New Albany, Miss., and had been a resident of Donley County most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church. She married Leonard Marcus Putman in 1919 at Lelia Lake. He died in 1973. She also was preceded in death by two daughters, Maggie Pauline Putman in 1921 and Freida Gray in 1987; and a son, L.M. Putman Jr., in 1995. Mrs. Putman had been a resident of Medical Center Nursing Home in Clarendon for the past seven years. Survivors include three daughters, Coronette Goodgion of Plainview, and Joan Kidd and Yvonne King, both of Clarendon; two sisters, Vera Headler of Paradise, Calif., and Mary Lee McNall of Olympia, Wash.; two brothers, Verna Garland of Amarillo and Webb Garland of Gig Harbor, Wash.; 15 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and nine great-greatgrandchildren. Wilma Louise Moseley FARWELL - Wilma Louise Moseley, 74, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Pat Riley and the Rev. J.L. Bass, both of Brownfield, officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Terrace Cemetery by Ellis-Blackwell Funeral Home in Friona. Mrs. Moseley was born in Bethel, Okla. She had lived in Parmer and Bailey counties since 1925, moving from Bethel. She graduated from Farwell High School in 1940 and attended Eastern New Mexico University and Texas Tech University. She married Hugh Moseley in 1962 at Friona. Mrs. Moseley worked for the Farmers Home Administration office for many years. She was a past president of the ESA sorority. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by three infant children, Don Scott, Rebecca and Melvin Edward. Survivors include her husband; a son, David Moseley of Farwell; and three granddaughters. John Rothwell CHILDRESS - John Rothwell, 89, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997. Services will be at 4 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jon Crosby and the Rev. Johnny Robertson officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home. Mr. Rothwell was born in Childress County. He was the owner of Old-Fashion Freeze before retiring. He also was a farmer in the Tell area. He married Lillian Bounds in 1932 at Tell. She died in 1982. He also was preceded in death by two daughters, Evelyn Rothwell in 1946 and Betty Jo Crawford in 1963. Mr. Rothwell was a member of First United Methodist Church. Survivors include three sons, Larry Rothwell, Sandy Rothwell and Walter Rothwell, all of Childress; two sisters, Nora Hamner of Amarillo and Mary Hunt Johnson of Gruver; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Roland Roy Moore VIGO PARK - Roland Roy Moore, 83, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997. Services were at 10 a.m. Thursday in Tulia Christian Fellowship Church with the Rev. Rusty Gray, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Wayside Cemetery by Wallace Funeral Home of Tulia. Mr. Moore was born in Vera. He attended Cottonwood community schools. He moved to Wayside in 1929 and graduated from Happy High School in 1932. He attended West Texas State College in 1933 and graduated from McMurry University in 1952. He received a master of divinity from Perkins Methodist University in Dallas. He pastored at the Middlewell and Spurlock Methodist churches for six years and at the Vigo Park and Wayside Methodist churches for 20 years. He was an approved Northwest Texas Methodist evangelist and had a radio ministry show in Tulia called "The Way'' for 14 years. Mr. Moore was a farmer and rancher. He also was a professional calf roper and a horse show judge for many years. He was a member and elder of Tulia Christian Fellowship Church. He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and was one of the first quarter horse inspectors for the organization. He also was a member of the Swisher County Sheriff's Posse. Mr. Moore married Mary Billie Knox in 1938 at Lubbock. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Gary Moore and Lee Moore, both of Vigo Park, and Delton Moore of Canyon; three sisters, Mildred Graham of Olton, and Lucille Culwell and Neva Latham, both of Vigo Park; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to Crown of Texas Hospice or the Wayside Ambulance Service. Ruth Goldston PETERSBURG - Ruth Goldston, 85, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jesse Nave, former pastor, and the Rev. John Lowrie, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Strip Cemetery by Lemons Funeral Home of Plainview. Mrs. Goldston was born in Wise County. She was raised in Wise County and the Center community of Lubbock County. She graduated from high school at Center. She married William Aaron "Bill'' Goldston in 1931 at Clovis, N.M. They lived in the Lakeview community, where they were engaged in farming and ranching. They moved to Causey, N.M., in 1957, and returned to Petersburg in 1962. Mr. Goldston died in 1980. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Lou Beard, in 1995. Mrs. Goldston moved to Ralls in 1990. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Trell Meadows of Petersburg; two sons, Ted Goldston of Petersburg and Don Goldston of El Campo; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-greatgranddaughter. Terry Wayne Mahorney PADUCAH - Terry Wayne Mahorney, 48, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ed Peckham, pastor, and Larry Crabtree of Childress officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery by Seigler Funeral Home. Mr. Mahorney was born in Paducah and had been a lifelong Paducah resident. He was a graduate of Paducah High School. He served in the Army from 1969 to 1971. He operated a service station and a television satellite business before entering the agricultural spray business. He married Linda Crabtree in 1968 at Paducah. Survivors include his wife; a son, Jay Mahorney of Pampa; a daughter, Ginger Mahorney of Paducah; his parents, John and Ruth Mahorney of Paducah; two brothers, Bill Mahorney and Donald Mahorney, both of Paducah; and a sister, Betty Paschall of Paducah. S.P. Fields PLAINVIEW - S.P. Fields, 72, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 1997, in Oklahoma City. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in United Baptist Church with the Rev. Ray McCoy, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Cemetery by Wood-Dunning Funeral Home. Mr. Fields was born in Pauls Valley, Okla. He was a compress operator for Panhandle Compress for many years. He married Willie Lee Austin in 1952 at Mexico. She died in May. Survivors include four children, Lois Jean and Carolyn Jean, both of Oklahoma City, and Harry Lee and Doris Lane, both of Kansas City, Kan.; three stepchildren, Willis Pea Sr. and Nancy L. Smith, both of Los Angeles, and Lillie M. Pea-Lowery of Oklahoma City; a sister, Elnora Fields of Pauls Valley; 27 grandchildren; and 61 great-grandchildren. Scott Becker MEMPHIS - Scott Becker, 34, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Taylor, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery by Adams Funeral Home of Wellington. Mr. Becker was born in Hereford. He attended Memphis High School. He was a heavy equipment operator for Fuller and Sons Road Construction. He was a member of the Baptist church. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Courtney Becker, in 1989. Survivors include his father and stepmother, Loyd and Lavell Becker of Memphis; a son, Nicholas Becker of Amarillo; a brother, Steve Becker of Childress; a sister, Kathy Dean of Newcastle, Okla.; and his grandmother, Lila Becker of Memphis. The family requests memorials be to First United Methodist Church of Memphis. Oleta Watts WELLINGTON - Oleta Watts, 69, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Jim Ikner, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in North Fairview Cemetery by Adams Funeral Home. Mrs. Watts was born in the Lillie community of Collingsworth County. She attended school in Quail. She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist church. She married Shorty Watts in 1957 at Clovis, N.M. He died in 1979. Survivors include three daughters, Jo Ann Klinekole, Cindy Morris and Marilyn Kennedy, all of Wellington; a son, Curtis Southerland of Wellington; three brothers, Robert Fike of Canon City, Colo., Howard Fike of Amarillo and Raymond Fike of Wellington; a sister, Charlene Cleveland of Belton; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
