Services were at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Andrew's Lutheran Church at Weesatche with the Rev. Paul Kersten, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Westside Cemetery at Yorktown. Arrangements were by Lamprecht-Janssen Funeral Home of Yorktown and Robertson Funeral Directors Inc. of Clarendon. Mr. Thurk was born in Weesatche. He was a resident of Corpus Christi for more than 15 years before moving to Clarendon in 1992. He had been a sporting goods salesman for most of his life and was employed by Oshman's Sporting Goods for more than 15 years before retiring in 1982. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Corpus Christi. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Ruth Gips, in 1990. Survivors include a daughter, Connie Clifford of Clarendon; a son, Larry Thurk of Corpus Christi; a sister, Norma Landgreber of Yorktown; a brother, Norman Thurk of Yorktown; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Frances Jenelle Vasek HALE CENTER - Frances Jenelle "Nell'' Vasek, 69, of Plainview, a former Hale Center resident, died Thursday, April 24, 1997. Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Hale Center Church of Christ with Silas Short of Post officiating. Burial was in Parklawn Memorial Gardens at Plainview by Freeman Funeral Home of Hale Center. Mrs. Vasek was born in Lockney. She attended school in Petersburg and graduated with honors from Petersburg High School in 1946. She attended West Texas State University in Canyon. She married Wesley Vasek in 1950 at Strawn. They moved to Hale County in 1951. Her husband died in 1970, and she moved to Hale Center that same year. She moved to Plainview in 1986. She was employed as a receptionist with Hi-Plains Hospita, Tillerson-Fish and McGavock Motors. When she semi-retired, she kept children in her home. She was a member of the Hale Center Church of Christ. Survivors include two sons, Gary Vasek of Booker and Miles Vasek of Shallowater; two brothers, Dick Golden of Wildorado and Don Golden of Kendrick, Idaho; a sister, Joe Ann Osuchowski of Springfield, Mo.; five grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren. Burial will be in Quanah Memorial Park. Mr. Jalomo was born in Quanah and had lived in Quanah all of his life. He graduated from Quanah High School. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Survivors include his mother, Maria R. Jalomo of Quanah; four sisters, Mary D. Perez of Giddings, Carmen Garcia of Corpus Christi, Janie Martinez of Quanah and Teresa Dotson of Canyon Lake; and four brothers, Freddie Jalomo of Uvalde, Luciano Jalomo of Vernon, Johaquin Jalomo of Ingleside and Tony Jalomo of Quanah. Donald Todd CANADIAN - Donald Todd, 62, died Thursday, April 24, 1997. Services were at 3 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Hiram Reyes officiating. Burial was in Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery by Stickley-Hill Funeral Directors. Mr. Todd was born in Comanche. He graduated from Hamilton High School and attended Tarleton State University at Stephenville. He served in Korea with the Army. He moved to Canadian in 1960 from Amarillo. He served as a deputy sheriff for Hemphill County for 61/2 years. When he retired in January, he had worked for the state of Texas for 30 years, spending 27 of those years as a meat inspector. Mr. Todd was a member of First Baptist Church in Hamilton and the Canadian Rodeo Association. He also was an active part of the Fourth of July rodeo and activities for many years. Survivors include his father, Sam F. Todd of Hamilton; two daughters, Nancy Carter of Las Vegas and Cathy Hutcheson of Canadian; a son, Roy Lee Todd of Hamilton; a sister, Marilyn Todd of Hamilton; a brother, Sam B. Clark GROOM - George H. Clark, 64, died Thursday, April 24, 1997. Burial will be in Groom Cemetery by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 Bell St., in Amarillo. Mr. Clark was born in Groom and graduated from Groom High School in 1951. He married Dorthy Davis in 1951 at Clovis, N.M. He was a farmer and rancher in Donley County for 14 years. He worked for Western Gillete Trucking and Roadway Express for 25 years. He retired in 1993 and went back to farming and ranching. Mr. Clark was a member, deacon, song leader and Bible class teacher at Groom Church of Christ. He had received many safe driving awards and was awarded first place in the DFW Driving Championships at the regional level in 1990 and 1991. He was a member of the Teamsters Union and served as job steward. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Larry Clark of Canyon, and Roy Clark and Matt Clark, both of Van Horn; a daughter, Georgia Jenuine of Fort Worth; his mother, Ivy Clark of Amarillo; a brother, Walter D. Clark of Amarillo; a sister, Nadine Thornton of Groom; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Merville Thomas Staggs SHAMROCK - Merville Thomas Staggs, 73, died Saturday, April 26, 1997. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Shamrock Cemetery with the Rev. Joe G. Jernigan, pastor of Calvary Christian Fellowship Church officiating. The body will be cremated under the direction of Wright Funeral Directors. Mr. Staggs was born in Shamrock. He married Edna Lucille Shelly in 1945 at Kansas City, Mo. She preceded him in death. He had lived in Brownfield for the last 37 years. He worked for JI Implement for many years and he also owned his own fiberglass business. He served in the Army during World War II, serving in Europe in an artillery division. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served as past commander for both organizations for several years. Survivors include three sons, Tommy Staggs of Shamrock, John Staggs and Kiff Staggs, both of Beaumont; three daughters, Sharon Kelly of Denver, Karen Reece of Phoenix, Ariz., and Stacy Staggs of Beaumont; a sister, Erma Joyce Passons of Amarillo; a special friend, Jean Bishop of Brownfield; and eight grandchildren. The body will not be available for viewing. Marsha Jan Pipkin SPEARMAN - Marsha Jan Pipkin, 47, died Friday, April 25, 1997. Wesley Holland, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Higgins, officiating. Arrangements are by Stickley-Hill Funeral Directors of Canadian. Mr. Rankin was born in Gunter. Following high school, he attended Amarillo College. He served in the Air Force during World War II. He married Winnell Scott in 1950 at Amarillo. He owned and operated Weldon's Men and Boys Shop in Amarillo from 1956 until 1961. In 1961 they moved to Lipscomb from Amarillo. They farmed and ranched in Lipscomb from 1961 until 1982. He was a member of the Lipscomb Union Club. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Patricia Shelton of Woodward, Okla.; his mother, Elsie Rankin of Amarillo; a sister, LaFaun Ward of Amarillo; and five grandchildren. Mrs. French was born in Hillsboro and attended schools in Mauden, Switch, Goodnight and Panhandle. She married John F. French in 1923 at Amarillo. They farmed near Amarillo before moving to Texline in 1926. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Texline and started the Coldwater Community Club. She is preceded in death by her husband in 1972, and two sons, Melvin and Richard French. Survivors include two sons, John W. French of Dalhart, and Carl French of Coldwater; six grandchildren; five greatgrandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Amarillo Esther L. Saunders Esther L. Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Becky Bland, Priscilla Haynes and Mary Beth Klein, all of Amarillo; three sons, Clifford Carroll, Cornel Carroll and Ralph Carroll, all of Amarillo; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Thomas Earl Wilson Thomas Earl Wilson, 89, of Amarillo, died Friday, April 25, 1997. Burial will be at Llano Cemetery. Mrs. Freeman was born in Ochiltree. She married Alfred Freeman in 1946 at Wedding Cake Mountains in New Mexico. He died in 1990. She worked as a dispatcher for the Clayton, N.M., Police Department. She retired in 1974. She then was a homemaker. She was active in church work and the American Red Cross. She was instrumental in establishing AA in Clayton. She was also active in several police associations. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Clayton. Survivors include four daughters, Betty Russell and Bobby Myers, both of Amarillo, Bonny Pearson of San Benito, Calif., and Lynda Freeman of Grand Prairie; three sons, Bud Bobbitt and Bill Bobbitt, both of Irving, and Johnny Freeman of Grand Prairie; a brother, Sid Carpenter of Carrollton; two sisters, Ruth Balzer of Perryton, and Mabel Brodie of Waco; 16 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren. He married Dixie Boyd in 1956 at Albuquerque, N.M. He served in the Navy during World War II. He worked for Feddway for 13 years. After working for Feddway, he started and was still operating Zickefoose Real Estate Company. He was a member of Lawndale Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Barbara Jackson of Amarillo, and Ann Morgan of Rockford, Ill.; a son, Dr. Mike Rodgers of Dallas; a brother, Pete Zickefoose of Corpus Christi; and six grandchildren. Beulah Mae Deatherage ROFF - Beulah Mae Deatherage, 74, of Amarillo, died Thursday, April 24, 1997. Arrangements are by Criswell Funeral Home of Ada, Okla. Mrs. Deatherage was born in Pontotoc County, Okla. She grew up in this area and came back to Roff in 1979. She then went back to Texas in 1995. She worked in the supply department of High Plains Baptist Hospital. She also worked in the housekeeping department of Memorial Hospital in Dumas. She was a member of Church of Christ. She married Amanuel M. "Dee'' Deatherage in 1942 at Ada. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993 at Ada, a son, Amanuel V. Deatherage, and a daughter, Linda Faye. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Eberhardt of Dumas, and Gerrie Johnston of Amarillo; three sisters, Minnie Brown of Ada, Marie Tiner of Oceano, Calif., and Goldie Henderson of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, Harvey Shumard of Ada; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Oklahoma Lera Southard RYAN, Okla., - Lera Southard, 83, died Thursday, April 24, 1997. Services will be at 3 p.m. today in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clarence Mize, pastor of the Irving Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be at the Ryan Cemetery. Arrangements are by Grantham-Worley Funeral Home. Mrs. Southard was born in Courtney. In 1919 the family moved to a farm west of Ryan, and in 1926, they moved into the town of Ryan. She grew up in the Ryan area and graduated from Ryan High School in 1930. She continued her education at Central State College at Edmond and received a Provisional Teacher's Certificate. She taught school at the Irving Consolidated School west of Ryan. She married Charlie Southard in 1936 at Ryan. They made their home on a farm west of Ryan. He died in 1978. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Spragins of Payson, Ariz., and Susan Krittenbrink of Rogersville, Mo.; two sons, Thornton Southard of Fritch, Texas, and Carlie Southard of Ryan; a sister, Edith Bittick of Ryan; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. New Mexico Jack Smart TUCUMCARI, N.M. - Jack Smart, 85, died Thursday, April 24, 1997. Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Saturday in Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Civil, minister of Trinity Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements were by Dunn Funeral Home. Mr. Smart was born in Paducah, Texas, and had lived in the Tucumcari area for most of his life. He served with the Army during World War II from 1941 to 1945. He was a rancher when he was younger and was a carpenter at the time of his retirement. Survivors include a brother, J.B. Smart of Tucumcari; and two sisters, Verneece Ballew of Tucumcari and Janell Carver of Mesa, Ariz. She was an office manager and had been employed in the mental health field for several years. She was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Selma. Cleburne Curtis Stevens Jr. DRIPPING SPRINGS - Cleburne Curtis Stevens Jr., 69, died Wednesday, April 23, 1997. Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday in Harrell Funeral Home at Austin with Danny Fuertes officiating. Burial was in Live Oak Cemetery. Mr. Stevens was born in Amarillo. After high school, he served in the Army and then graduated with honors from West Texas State University. He married Katherine Joan Harris in 1949 at Amarillo. He was an oil and gas reporter in Midland and Dallas before returning to Amarillo to establish National Petroleum Bibliography, a firm that published technical books and maps. In the 1970s, Curtis and his brother, Donald G. Stevens of Roswell, N.M., developed oil and gas wells and built Stevens Oil Co. into one of the largest independent producers in New Mexico. Mr. Stevens retired in 1984 and moved to Austin in 1991. He had produced a manuscript of "oil field verse.'' Survivors include his children, Marla Stevens Conner, Claire Stevens Ross and Lisa Stevens, all of Austin, Clay Stevens of Delray Beach, Fla., and Cody Stevens of Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters, Yvonne Hoover and Vivian Card, both of Portland, Ore.; and four grandchildren. Thomas McVey Short WIMBERLEY - Thomas McVey Short, 82, died Sunday, April 20, 1997. Services were held Wednesday, April 23, 1997, at the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Wimberley. Arrangements were by Austin-Peel and Son Funeral Home, Inc. Mr. Short was born in Okmulgee, Okla. He was a graduate of Oklahoma University. He was an Army veteran during World War II. He retired from the Hughes Tool Company after 42 years of service, 18 years of which were spent in South America. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mary Ann Caldwell Short; a son, Thomas McVey II, of Oklahoma City; two daughters, Cynthia Ann Haliburton of Amarillo, and Mary Rebecca Monaghan of Houston; a sister, Anne Elizabeth Short of Enid, Okla; and seven grandchildren. Cindy Armstrong Brown LUBBOCK - Cindy Armstrong Brown, 36, died Friday, April 25, 1997. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Resthaven Memorial Park. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. in Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Davis Price, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by Sanders Funeral Home. Mrs. Brown was born in Lubbock. She graduated from Monterey High School. She also attended Angelo State University and American Commercial College. She married Jerry Brown in 1980 at Tahoka. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, the Lubbock Advertising Federation, the Tenth District Advertising Federation, and the National Advertising Federation. She worked as operations manager for Nelda Armstrong Advertising Agency. Survivors include her husband; her parents, Nelda Armstrong of Lubbock, and Mr. and Mrs. H.S. Armstrong of Gilmer; a brother, Gregg Armstrong of Fort Worth; a stepbrother, Michael Seeton of Lancaster; two sisters, Lisa Hoover of Abilene, and Leslie Swinford of Rowlett; a half sister, Lindsay Armstrong of College Station; grandmother, Juanita Lee of Dublin. B.J. Turner WAKA - B.J. Turner, 73, died Friday, April 25, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Waka Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Martin Gauby officiating. Burial will be at Hansford Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, Spearman. Mr. Turner was born in the family home near Morse, in Hutchinson County. He had been a lifetime resident of the Spearman area. He attended school in Gruver. He married Nathalie Bernice Reynolds in 1942 at Perryton. They moved to Waka where they have farmed and ranched for 53 years. He was a member of the Waka Church of the Brethren, the Waka Lions Club and had served 25 years on the Waka School Board. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Phillip Turner of Spearman, and Larry Turner of Abilene; a daughter, Patricia Cudd of Waka; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to Waka Church Building Fund or a favorite charity.
