Johnson F.M. "Hap'' Johnson, 55, of Amarillo, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 1997. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Oddfellows Cemetery at Gonzales with the Rev. Brad Russell of First Baptist Church of Gonzales officiating. Arrangements are by N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Johnson was born in Ardmore, Okla. He owned and operated J&J Well Logging in Oklahoma for 20 years. He was self-employed in Amarillo. He was a Presbyterian and a drag racer. He married Glenda Mercer in 1970 at Amarillo. Survivors include his wife; a son, Kirk Johnson of Houston; a brother, T.R. Reyne Johnson of Oklahoma City; and a grandson. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials be to Olivia's Angels at Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice and Life Enrichment Center. Gilbert Vernon Baumgarner Gilbert Vernon Baumgarner, 76, of Amarillo, died Monday, Aug. 25, 1997. Services will be Friday in Deer River, Minn. Burial will be in Pine Ridge Cemetery at Deer River by Carroll Funeral Home. Local arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home, 2800 S. Osage St. Mr. Baumgarner was born in Deer River. He moved to Amarillo about a month ago. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He retired as a master sergeant after 24 years of service. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Moose Lodge. Survivors include two daughters, Samantha Luedke of Amarillo and Jill Waters of Utah; a son, Charles Baumgarner of California; his mother, Evangeline Swanson Baumgarner of Deer River; seven sisters, Vera Frazer, Vivian Ott and Janice Kraskey, all of Deer River, Grace Hall of Newhall, Calif., Joyce Fieber of Apple Valley, Minn., Faye Volmer of Sandy, Ore., and Betty Martin of Wrightsville, Ga.; three brothers, Robert Baumgarner of Deer River, Stanford Baumgarner of Grand Rapids, Minn., and Sherby Baumgarner of Omaha, Neb.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Arthur Leroy Chavez Arthur Leroy Chavez, 36, of Amarillo, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 1997. Vigil service will be at 6 p.m. today in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by the Rev. Phillip Lindley, pastor. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. Chavez was born in Amarillo and lived here all his life. He attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and graduated from Caprock High School. He worked as a machinist for Maywood for 12 years before going to work for Stemple. He was a Navy veteran, serving two years at Pensacola, Fla. Survivors include his father and stepmother, Jesus and Henrietta Chavez; his mother and stepfather, Agnes and Anderson Sanders of Amarillo; his sister, Joanna Chavez of Amarillo; two brothers, Robert Chavez of Amarillo and Ernie Chavez of Arizona; six stepbrothers, Jimmy Jones, Cecil Jones, Donnie Jones, Gary Jones, Robert Sanders and Jason Sanders, all of Amarillo; six stepsisters, Glenda Norman and Becky Tidwell, both of Amarillo, Jennifer Rawlins and Shawneree Sanders, both of Fritch, and Vickie Beukie and Tammy Rodriquez, both of Borger; and his grandmother, Josefita Chavez of Santa Rosa, N.M. The family will be at 7805 Sombrero Drive. Alice Sutton Stein Alice Sutton Stein, 80, of Amarillo, died Monday, Aug. 25, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2820 Virginia Circle, with Dr. John Bridwell, minister emeritus of First Christian Church, officiating. Entombment will be in Llano Cemetery. Mrs. Stein was born in Prague, Okla., and moved to Amarillo in 1946. She graduated from Central High School in Oklahoma City, where she was the debate champion in 1934. She attended Mills College in Oakland, Calif., and the University of Oklahoma. She was a homemaker, a Girl Scout leader and a volunteer for the PTA. She was a member of Lawyers' Wives Club, Amarillo Antique Club and First Christian Church. Mrs. Stein married C.A. "Pete'' Stein in 1937. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Mary Anne Stein of Albuquerque, N.M., and Nancy Besly of Lubbock; her sister, Stella Lucille Rickner of Norman, Okla.; two grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Modena Mangrum Modena Mangrum, 75, of 7811 Bent Tree, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 1997. Private services will be at a later date in Las Vegas. Burial will be in Palm Memorial Park in Las Vegas. Arrangements are by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 Bell St. Ms. Mangrum was born in Carnegie, Okla. She was a waitress in Las Vegas. She was a member of the Church of Christ. She married Harry Mangrum in 1974 at Las Vegas. He died in 1996. Survivors include two sisters, Betty Trainer of Amarillo and Norma Weldon of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Elsewhere Nancy L. Fannon YANTIS - Nancy L. Fannon, 59, died Monday, Aug. 25, 1997, in Tyler. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Tapp Funeral Home Chapel of Sulphur Springs with the Rev. Claude Sutton officiating. Burial will be in Seymore Cemetery. Mrs. Fannon was born in Silver Creek. She married William R. "Bill'' Fannon in 1959 at Fort Worth. He died in 1993. Mrs. Fannon was a homemaker. She was a Baptist. Survivors include a son, James Melvin Fannon of Yantis; a sister, Lucy Mary Blackerby of Amarillo; and a brother, Johnny Jennings of Fort Worth. Box 512, Cumby, Texas 75433. Area Robert W. Carter PAMPA - Robert W. "Bobby'' Carter, 49, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 1997, in Galveston. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Memory Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Leif Hasskarl, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mr. Carter was born in Ellsworth, Kan. He moved to Pampa in 1957 from Independence, Kan. He was living in Whitney at the time of his death. Mr. Carter was a 1966 graduate of Pampa High School. He was a former manager of the Pampa Country Club. He was a decorated disabled veteran of the Army, serving during the Vietnam War. He was a Lutheran. Survivors include his wife, Sondra; two sons, Shawn Carter of Amarillo and Joseph B. Carter of Whitney; four daughters, Stacey Carter and Gina Wilburn, both of Houston, Meagan Carter of Whitney and Christine Gilliland of San Diego; his mother and stepfather, Velma and Richard Burkart of Pampa; two brothers, Mike Carter of Phoenix and Mark Carter of Tulsa, Okla.; a sister, Sharon Valdez of Austin; and four grandchildren. Lela May Payne LAKEVIEW - Lela May Payne, 92, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 1997. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Taylor, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery by Spicer Funeral Home of Memphis and MyersLong Funeral Directors of Turkey. Mrs. Payne was born in Lakeview. She married Troy Payne in 1921 at Lakeview. He died in 1968. Mrs. Payne was a homemaker and a lifetime member of Lakeview First United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Gerald Payne of Euless; a brother, Leon Whatson of California; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to the Lakeview Cemetery Association. Grace Pyle PLAINVIEW - Grace Pyle, 57, died Monday, Aug. 25, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Lemons Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Joe P. Weldon, pastor of Parkview Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park. Mrs. Pyle was born and raised in Plainview. She graduated from Plainview High School and attended Draughon's Business College in Lubbock. She worked for Heath Furniture and began working for Southwestern Bell Telephone in 1962. She retired from Southwestern Bell in 1993. She married Ira "Cotton'' Pyle in 1974 at Clovis, N.M. They moved to Amarillo in 1975 and returned to Plainview in 1996. Mrs. Pyle was a Methodist and a member of the Telephone Pioneers. Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Shelly Hembree of Plainview; two stepdaughters, Rolanda Elder of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Olivia Fennell of Dearfield, Mich.; one son, Chadwick Pyle of Oahu, Hawaii; one sister, Joy Craig of Bellingham, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. J.L. Souder WELLINGTON - J.L. Souder, 75, died Monday, Aug. 25, 1997. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Church of Christ with Haun Kite, minister of North Amarillo Church of Christ, and Tom Anderson, minister of Memphis Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in North Fairview Cemetery by Adams Funeral Home. Mr. Souder was born in Memphis and had been a lifelong resident of the Buck Creek community in Collingsworth County. He attended school at Buck Creek. He married Willie Easter in 1943 at Memphis. Mr. Souder was a farmer and a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Reed Souder and Redgie Souder, both of Wellington; two daughters, Phennette Gay and Hope Fuell, both of El Reno, Okla.; a brother, Perry Souder of Altus, Okla.; eight sisters, Mary Ellen Mitchell of Grand Prairie, Margret Reeves of Phoenix, Frances Sasser of Cheyenne, Wyo., Ruby Dell Pitts of Wellington, Betty Jean Lancaster of Norwood, Mo., Annie Mae Spears of Childress, Tommie Neeley of Amarillo and Connie James of Roswell, N.M.; 11 grandchildren; and eight greatgrandchildren.
