Mrs. Sellers was born in Ashland, Kan. During World War II, she was a "Rosie the Riveter" at the Boeing Aircraft plant in Wichita, Kan. She published the Bucklin Banner, a weekly newspaper in Kansas, for 10 years before moving to Clayton. She became the publisher of the Union County Leader in 1956 and headed the weekly newspaper for 24 years. She also wrote a weekly column called "Memo From Betty." Her son, Nick Payton, took over as publisher in 1980. He died this month. Mrs. Sellers was active with the Republican party and often had been a delegate to the state Republican conventions in Kansas and New Mexico. She served on several state boards and commissions with gubernatorial appointments in Kansas and New Mexico. She had been a longtime secretary of the Union County Republican Central Committee. She was the founder of the Clayton Arts Festival and was instrumental in establishing the Shrine of the Testaments gallery in downtown Clayton. Survivors include her husband, Dr. John Sellers of Clayton; a daughter, Lani Hammond of Amarillo; a son, Tony Payton of Arlington, Va.; two sisters, Nan Clossen of Ashland and Mary Root of Woodstock, Ill.; and six grandchildren.
