Services were at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Amarillo with Mark Keys, president of the Childress branch, and T. Scott Hendrick, stake president, officiating. Entombment was in Memorial Park Mausoleum in Amarillo by Robertson Funeral Directors Inc. of Clarendon. Mrs. Smith was born in Crawford, Okla., and had been a resident of Amarillo from 1942 until 1973, when she moved to Hedley. She retired 10 years ago as a licensed vocational nurse and special-duty nurse. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Childress branch. She married Bois Melvin Smith in 1934 at Perryton. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Melva Dene Roach of Columbus, Ohio, and Velva Gene Jeppson of Park Valley, Utah; a son, Joseph Wesley Smith of Amarillo; a sister, Mary Jo of California; 23 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. Anna Wiggains SUMMERFIELD - Anna Wiggains, 81, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Hereford Church of Christ with Tom Bailey officiating. Burial will be in West Park Cemetery in Hereford by Parkside Chapel in Hereford. Mrs. Wiggains graduated from Southwestern University in Weatherford, Okla., with a teaching degree. She married Chester Wiggains in 1946 in Beaver, Okla. They moved to Summerfield and farmed. She was a member of the Hereford Church of Christ and a homemaker. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Lowell Wiggains of Tyler and David Wiggains of Canyon; a sister, Mrs. Ray Lockett of Pampa; and seven grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to The High Plains Children's Home, 11475 S. Western St., Amarillo, Texas 79118. S.W. Johnson DALHART - S.W. "Sank" Johnson, 85, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Wood, of First Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Hass Funeral Home Inc. Mr. Johnson was born in Cordell, Okla., and moved to Dalhart in the 1920s from New Mexico. He was a member and deacon at First Baptist Church and a Navy veteran of World War II. He worked for Southwestern Public Service for more than 37 years, and he was a volunteer fireman in Dalhart and a member of the Electrical Workers Union. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite Cook, in 1972. Survivors include a son, Alfred C. Johnson of Dalhart. Bobby E. Phelan STINNETT - Bobby E. Phelan, 68, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Orville Rogers, pastor, and the Rev. Landrum Medlock, pastor of First Methodist Church, officiating. Masonic graveside services will be conducted by Adobe Walls Masonic Lodge No. 1355. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery by Brown Funeral Directors. Mr. Phelan was born in Lelia Lake and had lived in Stinnett for 38 years. He was a retired operator with Phillips Petroleum Co. He was a veteran of the Korean War, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a Baptist and a member of the Isom Masonic Lodge 1242. He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Wayne Phelan. Survivors include his wife, Irene; three sons, Dennis Phelan of Sanford, and Doyle and Dalbert Phelan, both of Stinnett; a daughter, Duella Nixon of Borger; a brother, L.B. Phelan of Pasadena, Texas; a sister, Lucille Wiggins of Pasadena; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The body will be available for viewing at the funeral home. Weldon McEachern PLAINVIEW - Weldon McEachern, 81, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998. Services will be at 10 a.m. today at First Baptist Church Family Life Chapel in Plainview with the Rev. Dr. Travis Hart, pastor, officiating and Dwight Martin of Dallas and Kris Martin of Houston assisting. Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park. Mr. McEachern was born in Abilene and married Lucille Watson in 1938 at Crosbyton. Mr. McEachern grew up in Crosbyton and graduated from Crosbyton High School. He moved to California in 1939. He worked for Lockheed during World War II. He managed the Shopping Bag in Los Angeles. In 1950, he moved to Hale County and farmed near Halfway until his retirement in 1976. He worked for Fred Garrison Oil Co. and Pollard Ford after his retirement. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Formby Sunday school class. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Vena Martin of Dallas and Patty Heflin of Plainview; two brothers, Wilson McEachern of Plainview and Harvey McEachern of Lubbock; a sister, Opal McEachern of Old Town, Maine; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Claude Clifford Chapman Jr. PLAINVIEW - Claude Clifford Chapman Jr., 71, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in College Heights Baptist Church in Plainview with the Rev. Don Robertson officiating. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens in Plainview by Wood-Dunning Funeral Home Inc. Mr. Chapman was born in Altus, Okla., and married Helen Clark in 1953 at Quanah. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in Germany and managed stores for M.E. Moses, TG&Y and Howard's. He bought Dargan's in 1973, Village Shop and Young Dud's in 1985 and The Vogue in Lamesa in 1988. After retiring, he worked at Gabriel's in Plainview. Survivors include his wife; a son, Clark Chapman of Wichita Falls; two daughters, Linda Bearrow of Norman, Okla., and Judy Dwyer of Plainview; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Raymond Creston McPherson LEFORS - Raymond Creston McPherson, 83, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998. Services will be at 4 p.m. Friday in Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Lewis Ellis, pastor of First Baptist Church of Lefors, officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Pampa with graveside rites conducted by Pampa Masonic Lodge No. 966 AF & AM. Mr. McPherson was born in Hess, Okla. He moved to Gray County in 1928 and graduated from Pampa High School in 1933. He drove a milk truck for Geaheart Creamery. He also drove for Your Laundry & Dry Cleaners and worked for 4R Industrial and for Cities Service, retiring in 1977. He was also a rancher. Mr. McPherson was a 50-year member and past president of the Shriners, a 50-year member of Pampa Chapter No. 65 Order of the Eastern Star and a 50-year member of Pampa Masonic Lodge No. 966. He also belonged to the Moose Lodge and was past president of the Sports Club. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lefors. In 1933 he married Mildred Hallman at Wheeler. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Marie Watson of Florence, S.C.; a brother, Robert ÔBob' McPherson of Pampa; three grandsons and two great-granddaughters. Andrew Detten Lewis PANHANDLE - Andrew Detten Lewis, 33, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998. Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. today in St. Theresa's Catholic Church. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Theresa's Catholic Church with the Rev. G. Neal Dee of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church of Groom officiating. Burial will be in Panhandle Cemetery by Minton / Chatwell Funeral Directors of Panhandle. Mr. Lewis was born in Amarillo and was a lifetime resident of Panhandle. He graduated from Panhandle High School in 1983. He received Lone Star Farmer degree and was chapter president in 1982-1983. He attended Texas State Technical Institute on a scholarship and graduated in 1985. He also received certification in airframe and power plant and aircraft inspection in 1988. Mr. Lewis owned Lewis Ag Air Repair Service and Lewis Spraying Service. He married Sharon Ann Yule in 1992 at Panhandle. Survivors include his wife; his parents, Irene and Ashby Lewis of Panhandle; and a sister, Rose Mary Lewis of Tulsa, Okla. Latham HEREFORD - M.R. "Marcus" Latham, 86, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Fellowship of Believers Church in Hereford with Dr. Nathan Stone officiating. Burial will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Park north of Hereford by Parkside Chapel. Mr. Latham was born in Cherokee County. He moved to Hereford in 1951. He was a retired farmer. He belonged to Fellowship of Believers Church. Mr. Latham served as a county commissioner of Precinct No. 2 for 12 years. He belonged to Hereford Masonic Lodge No. 849 and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was also a past president of Deaf Smith Chamber of Commerce, a past member of Hereford Lions Club and had served on the Hereford School Board. He married Blanche Dodson in 1933 at Levelland. She died in 1987. Survivors include his wife Susan; a son, Johnny Latham of Hereford; two daughters, Rita Kerley of Fort Worth and Lajean Henry of Hereford; three sisters, Fairy Rogers of Henderson, Louise Ferguson of Hereford and Evelyn Milner of Vernon; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Cecil Wendell Simpson TULIA - Cecil Wendell Simpson, 69, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in First United Methodist Church in Tulia with the Rev. Jesse Hodge of First United Methodist Church of Levelland and the Rev. James Willborn, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Tulia by Wallace Funeral Home in Tulia. Mr. Simpson was born in Tulia and married E'Laine Mote in 1951 at Tulia. He had lived in Swisher County since 1928 and graduated from Tulia High School in 1947. Mr. Simpson worked for Swisher Gas in Happy and Tulia and Ferrell Automotive in Tulia. He was in sales for Tulia Auto Parts Store for the past 15 years. He was in the National Guard in 1949 and a member of First United Methodist Church and Swisher County Activities Association. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1993 and a grandson in 1996. Survivors include two daughters, Celeste Howard of Tulia and Emily Keese of Grandbury; a sister, Faye Webb of Lubbock; a brother, Ray Simpson of Tulia; and two grandchildren. Chisum TULIA - Raymond G. Chisum, 89, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Tulia Church of Christ with Dennis Conway officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery by Wallace Funeral Home in Tulia. Mr. Chisum was born in Winters and married Olive McGavock in 1929 at Clovis, N.M. He attended schools in Winters. He moved to Swisher County in 1943, where he farmed and owned and operated Chisum Pump Co. until retirement in 1974. He was a member of Tulia Church of Christ and was active in Swisher County Senior Citizens. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Lola Simmons of Amarillo; three sons, Bill Chisum of Pocatello, Idaho, Coy Chisum of Richardson and Melvin Chisum of Earth; a sister, Katie Dyer of Hot Springs, Ark.; three brothers, Buster Chisum and Frank Chisum, both of Jayton, and R.Z. Amarillo Dylan James Hancock Dylan James Hancock, infant son of Steve Martin Jr. and Summer Bergeron of Canyon, died Sunday, June 28, 1998. Survivors include his parents; grandparents, Steve and Jackie Martin and Michael and Rosie Hancock, all of Canyon; and great-grandparents, Don and Margaret Hancock of Beaumont. Claude Alvis Chain Claude Alvis Chain, 80, of Amarillo, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors Pioneer Chapel, 2615 Paramount Blvd., with Perry R. Littlejohn and Gene Bell officiating. Burial will be in Claude Cemetery. Mr. Chain was born in Cold Springs, Okla. and moved to Texas as a child, where he lived just north of Canyon. He picked cotton and then joined the Army during World War II, where he served as a sergeant. Mr. Chain lived in California and then moved to Claude. He was a member of Church of Christ and attended Jan Werner's Adult Day Care. He married Hazel Littlejohn in 1996 at Amarillo. She died in 1998. Survivors include three sisters, Margaret Teanie Wilde of Claude, Thelma Chain of Stockton, Calif., and Flo Chain of Lubbock; two brothers, Doyle Chain of Pinetop, Ariz., and Paul Chain of Chula Vista, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Rosalie Littlejohn and Roberta Beard, both of Amarillo; two stepsons, George Littlejohn and Perry Littlejohn, both of Amarillo; and a special friend, Jean Wyble of Amarillo. The family will be at 1615 N. Garfield St. and 303 E. Fifth in Claude. They requests memorials be to Disabled Veterans. Irvin W. Pope Irvin W. Pope, 80, of Amarillo, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998. Mr. Pope was born in Warner, Okla., and had lived in Amarillo for the past 60 years. He married Patsy Cox in 1934 at Guymon, Okla. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He served in the Navy during World War II. Survivors include his wife; a son, Rex Pope of Virginia Beach, Va.; and two brothers, Floyd E. Pope of Willow, Alaska, and Delmer C. Landon Scott Birdsong Landon Scott Birdsong, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. James Scott Birdsong, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998. Mrs. Rhodes was born in Gainesville and worked as a cook for the Gainesville State School. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She married Jerry F. Rhodes in 1944 at Marietta, Okla. He preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by a son, Jerry B. Rhodes. Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Johnson of Gainesville; a brother, Thomas Carrol Steed of Amarillo; six grandsons; and four great-grandchildren. Nina Jackson WACO - Nina Jackson, 59, of Hewitt, a former Amarillo resident, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Alliance Bible Church with the Rev. Richard Koskela officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery by Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home of Waco. Mrs. Jackson was born in Wellington, where she graduated from high school. She married Gerald D. Jackson in 1957 at Pampa. A longtime Amarillo resident, she moved to Waco in 1988. She was preceded in death by a son, Brian D. Jackson. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Debra Ann Myers of Buffalo; a son, John Paul Jackson of Hewitt; a sister, Earlene Lewis of Odessa; a brother, Stan Harrison of Amarillo; and three grandchildren. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Pleasant Hill, N.M. Arrangements by Muffley Funeral Home. Miss Dunlap was born in Colby, Kan., and lived in the Clovis area since 1971. She graduated from Clovis High School in 1980. She worked as a bookkeeper for Conway Oil Co. and was a Methodist. Survivors include her parents, Jerry and Yetta Dunlap of Clovis and Janet and Don Smith of Ruidoso; a brother, Kevin Dunlap of Mountainair; grandmother, Dale E. Mayme Crawford LOGAN, N.M. - Mayme Crawford, 82, died Monday, June 29, 1998. Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. today at the family plot in Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Dan Pearce, minister of First Baptist Church of Logan, officiating. Arrangements are by Dunn Funeral Home in Tucumcari, N.M. Mrs. Crawford was born in Ash Flat, Ark., and had made her home in Logan for several years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Logan and the Logan Senior Citizens. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Crawford, in 1998. Survivors include two sons, Albert Henry of Logan and Elmo Henry of Shelan, Wash.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. The body will be available for viewing until 11:30 a.m. today at the Dunn Funeral Home. Oklahoma Lou Ellen Strong BOISE CITY, Okla. - Lou Ellen Elland Livingston Strong, 81, died Monday, June 22, 1998. The family gathered on June 26 to scatter her ashes at her place of choice. Arrangements were by Cimarron Mortuary. Mrs. Strong was born in a half-dugout, half-rock house on the edge of the Cimarron River. She grew up in Cimarron County, where she attended school until ninth grade, when she began to work to support herself. She married Otis Livingston, who preceded her in death. During World War II she lived in Wichita, Kan., where she worked for Boeing Aircraft. In 1948 she married Cy Strong and returned to Cimarron County to ranch with her husband. He died in 1966. In 1994 Mrs. Strong moved to Boise City but often returned to the ranch. Also preceding her in death was a son, Paul Livingston, and one grandchild. Survivors include three children, Jerry Livingston of Wichita, Kan., Pat Judkins of Amarillo and Frances Glass of Boise City; a brother, Joe Bailey Elland; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to B.R. Ogston Scholarship Fund in care of the mortuary.
