Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Memory Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Paul Nachtigall, pastor of Highland Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mrs. Morgan was born in Enid, Okla., and had been a resident of Pampa since 1938. She was a longtime member of the old First Christian Church on Starkweather Street. She had been employed by the Moose Lodge 1384 for several years. She married Ed Hassell in 1938 in Pampa. He died in 1972. She married Grover Morgan in 1974 at Miami. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Maleeya Dworshak of Tulsa, Okla.; two sons, Raymond Hassell of Pampa and Willis Hassell; a brother, Perry L. Choate of Pampa; a sister, Grace Leith of Pampa; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to Hospice of the Panhandle, Box 2795, Pampa, TX 79066-2795. Zenaida Hernandez BORGER - Zenaida Hernandez, 48, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today in Minton Memorial Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. John's Catholic Church by Monsignor Norbert Kuehler, pastor, and the Rev. Juan Carlos Barragan. Burial will be in the Garden of Love at Westlawn Memorial Park by Minton / Chatwell Funeral Directors. Mrs. Hernandez was born in Chihuahua, Mexico, and had been a Borger resident for 23 years. She was a cook in a restaurant and a member of St. John's Catholic Church. Survivors include her husband, Estanislao Hernandez; two sons, Saul Hernandez and Raul Hernandez, both of Borger; a daughter, Monica Hernandez of Borger; parents, Santiago and Celia Borunda of Mexico; six brothers, Israel Brounda, Lupe Brounda, Ricardo Borunda, Saul Borunda, Simon Borunda and Armando Borunda, all of Mexico; and three sisters, Cuca Chacon, Irma Boorunda and Sheila Brounda, all of Mexico. Lena Berten SHAMROCK - Lena Berten, 91, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998. Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Shamrock Cemetery with the Rev. John Dorn, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Directors of Shamrock. Mrs. Berten was born in Shamrock and was a lifelong resident. With her husband, she owned and operated Berten Drug for many years. They sold the drug store and purchased the Ladies Store, which she operated from 1960 until 1985. Mrs. Berten was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was an active member of the Methodist Women's Group, the B&PW Club, the Shamrock General Hospital Auxiliary and other civic and social clubs. She married Roy P. Berten in 1926. He preceded her in death in 1972. She also was preceded in death by a son, Jerry L. Berten. Survivors include a grandson, David Berten of Shamrock. The family requests memorials be to First United Methodist Church. Amarillo Captain R.C. Hall Captain R.C. Hall, 60, of Amarillo, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998. Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. today in Schooler Funeral Home Brentwood Chapel, 4100 S. Georgia St., with Phillip Bainum of SCCI Hospital officiating. Captain Hall was born in Fort Worth and moved to the area between Canyon and Amarillo three years ago. He was a sea captain who began his career working on a shrimp boat in Galveston. He joined the Merchant Marine and worked as a sea captain piloting ships to many foreign countries. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 7840. Survivors include a son, Michael W. Otto of Sandusky, Ohio; a daughter, Julie Gayle Gaucher of Indiana; a stepdaughter, Michele Manfredi of the Persian Gulf; and a sister, Doris Inlow of Midoro, Wis. Arthur Jake Havens Arthur Jake Havens, 59, of Amarillo, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Kingswood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terry Tamplen of the church officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. MDT today in Village of Roy Cemetery at Roy, N.M. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Havens was born in Roy and moved to Amarillo in 1958. He graduated from Roy High School in 1957. He retired as an engineer from Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. after 34 years. After retirement, he worked at Comanche Trail Golf Course and was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Survivors include the mother of his children, Mary Cash of Dallas; three sons, Pat Havens of Costa Mesa, Calif., Mike Havens of Amarillo and David Havens of Dallas; his mother, Bertha Havens of Albuquerque, N.M.; three brothers, Leroy Havens, Martin Havens and Wayne Shaw, all of Albuquerque, N.M.; three sisters, Mary Jane Havens and Christy Hollingsworth, both of Albuquerque and Patsy Hererra of Farmington; a special friend, Priscilla Butts of Amarillo; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Jack Roberts Jack Roberts, 52, of Amarillo, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Central Church of Christ with Paul Sneed officiating. Cremation and arrangements are by N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Roberts was born in Portales, N.M. He graduated from Dumas High School and West Texas State University. He was an Army veteran during the Vietnam conflict. He had been an Amarillo resident for 30 years. Mr. Roberts was a travel agent for 25 years and taught Spanish at Tascosa High School for one year. At the time of his death, he was a salesman for Parker Boats. He was a past member of Amarillo Executive Association and was a Baptist. He married Susan Jackson in 1990 at Amarillo. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Angie Reid and Page Love, both of Amarillo; his stepmother, Goldie Roberts of Dumas; a stepson, Andy Jackson of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; a stepdaughter, Amanda Jackson, of Amarillo; three sisters; four stepbrothers; and a grandson. Quentin Nathanel Higgins Quentin Nathanel Higgins, infant son of Misty Higgins, of Amarillo, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Llano Cemetery with the Rev. The family will be at 4107 S. Polk. Mary Morrow Steele Mary Morrow Steele, 74, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the Rev. Ray Crosier, the Rev. Peter Jaramillo, the Rev. Bud Erpen and the Rev. Bill Brashears as concelebrants. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia. Mrs. Steele was born in Wagoner, Okla., and moved to Amarillo in 1928. She graduated from St. Mary's Academy and worked with their alumnae for the past 55 years. During World War II, she was employed by Pantex, working in the temporary offices at Sixth and Polk while the plant was being built. Mrs. Steele had been a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church since 1954. She was a member of St. Rita's Circle of the Altar Society, St. Joseph's Rosary Group and the Third Order Secular Carmelites. She married Roy E. Steele in 1953 at Amarillo. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Bobby Steele and J.P. Steele, both of Amarillo; two daughters, Sister Mary Ana "Cathy" of the School Sisters of St. Francis at Panhandle and Cindy Steele of Houston; a brother, Gene F. New Mexico Brenda Gonzales PORTALES, N.M. - Brenda Gonzales, 46, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Hugh Wallis and Jay Brandenburg officiating. Burial will be in Portales Cemetery. Mrs. Gonzales was born in Palestine, Texas, and was raised in Carlsbad. Around 1970, she moved to Roswell, where she lived until moving to Portales in 1991. For the first several years that she lived in Portales, she worked at the local bus station. For the past three years, she worked at Poynor's Home and Auto, where she was a department head over the furniture, floor coverings and the China Closet. She was a Christian and met with a group who met in one another's homes. She married Marty Gonzales in 1995 in Portales. Survivors include her husband; a son, Malcomb Smith of Ruidoso; a daughter, Amanda Smith of Portales; two stepsons, Ernie Gonzales and Corey Gonzales, both of Portales; three stepdaughters, Shelly Armijo, Toni Gonzales and Carrie Gonzales, all of Portales; her mother, Vera Thompson of Elkhart, Texas; a brother, Lloyd Thompson of Palestine; a sister, Donna Bowlen of Roswell; and five grandchildren. Oklahoma Howard Richardson Harris GUYMON, Okla. - Howard Richardson Harris, 75, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Bunch-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Maynard of Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Family burial will be in the Elmhurst Cemetery. Mr. Harris was born in Lebanon, Tenn., and moved to Guymon in 1990 from DeRidder, La. He served in the Army during World War II and the Vietnam War. While serving in the Army, he was honored with the following decorations and citations: Overseas Service Bar, American Campaign Medal, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three bronze service stars. He was a member of the American Legion. Survivors include a daughter, Judy Morris of Germantown, Md.; a son, Alan Wells of Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, William Clarence Harris of Newton, Kan.; five sisters, Ruby Grice of Hardesty, Gladys Cole of DeRidder, Joy Smith and Marcille Conner, both of Guymon and Jan Ballard of VanAlstyne, Texas; special friend, Juanita Munz of Guymon; and four grandchildren. Carla Lynn Smalts KEYES, Okla. - Carla Lynn Smalts, 51, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church in Keyes with the Rev. Jason Kearney, pastor, and the Rev. Billy Ramage, pastor of First Baptist Church of Clayton, N.M., officiating. Arrangements are by Henson-Novak Funeral Directors of Guymon. Mrs. Smalts was born in Amarillo and lived in Masterson, Texas, before moving to Keyes in 1959. She graduated from Keyes High School. She was actively involved in the family farm, 4-H, her children's activities and drove the school bus. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she taught Vacation Bible School for many years. Mrs. Smalts was involved in public speaking, served as president of SORD and was a board member of the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality. She also was the chairman of the Cimarron County Republican Party. She was married to Zane Raymond Smalts in 1964 at Keyes. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Janell Smalts of Norman; two sons, Randy Smalts of Dallas and Travis Smalts of Forgan; her mother, Eloise Owens of Amarillo; a brother, Gary Owens of Amarillo; and a granddaughter. Friends may call from noon until 9 p.m. today or from 9 until 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
