Hartman LOCKNEY - M.W. "Shorty" Hartman, 86, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Luther Crawford, secretary/treasurer of the North American Baptist Association, officiating. Burial will be in the Lockney Cemetery by Moore-Rose-White Funeral Home. Mr. Hartman was born in Comanche. He attended school in the Buck Creek community. He married Ruby Lorene Crawford in 1932 in Wellington. They moved to the Lone Star community of Floyd County in 1949 from Silverton. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Lockney Senior Citizens Association. He was a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by two sons, Melvin Ray Hartman in 1946 and Timothy James Hartman in 1967 and by a daughter, Joyce Louise Hartman in 1937. Survivors include his wife; a son, David Hartman of Lubbock; a brother, J.C. Hartman Jr.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church of Olton with the Rev. W. Johnson, the Rev. L. Brooks, the Rev. C. Mullins and the Rev. C. Joiner officiating. Burial will be in Olton Cemetery by Foskey-Lilley-McGill Funeral Home. Mr. O'Neal was born in Marlin. In 1967, he moved to Olton from Frederick, Okla. He retired in 1985 after 18 years as a grain elevator operator for Olton Grain Co-op. He was a member of Bohner Chapel Church. He married Jettie Sue Shaw in 1989 at Plainview. He was preceded in death by two sons. Grace Ora Scates QUANAH - Grace Ora Scates, 91, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Church of Christ with Lydal Werner and the Rev. She was a homemaker who lived in Hardeman County most of her life. She was a member of the Church of Christ. She married James Perdue Scates in 1922 at Lazare. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1960 and a daughter, Cleo Daniels. Raymond L. Jackson BORGER - Raymond L. "Ray" Jackson, 90, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998. He retired as owner/operator of a muffler shop and service station. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and past member of the Borger Elks Lodge. He married Una Ogilvie in 1936 at Beaver County, Okla. Survivors include his wife; a son, Norman Jackson of Lubbock; a brother, Harry Jackson of Borger; a sister, Ludella Davis of Beaver; and two grandchildren. Cathryn A. Lewis BORGER - Cathryn A. Lewis, 86, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998. She was a presser at Hargrave Laundry for 10 years and a nurse's aide at Twilight Nursing Home. She married J.V. Calcote in 1983 at Amarillo. Survivors include her husband; two stepsons, Aaron W. Calcote of Amarillo and Lloyd R. Calcote of Tennessee; two brothers, Floyd Lewis of Elk City, Okla., and William Ray Lewis of Decatur; two sisters, Laverne Portwood of Childress and Mollie Slape of Amarillo; and two stepgrandchildren. Fred B. Nies PFLUGERVILLE - Fred B. Nies, 84, a former Perryton resident, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Christian Church in Perryton with the Rev. Frank T. Springer officiating. Burial will be in Ochiltree Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home Inc. of Perryton. Mr. Nies was born in Ochiltree County and had lived in Perryton. He retired from the Perryton Coco-Cola Bottling Co. and was a member of First Christian Church of Perryton and the Masons. He married Retha Hooper in 1938 at Borger. She died in 1997. Survivors include a son, Fred Nies II of Pflugerville; a daughter, Sharon K. O'Neil of Little Rock, Ark.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was self-employed as a carpenter for more than 60 years. He was a charter member of Avenue Baptist Church in Hereford. He married Inez Rickman. He was preceded in death by a son, Gerald Houston, and a daughter, Sandra Jean Wright. Survivors include his wife; a son, Ron Houston of Mountain Home, Ark.; two brothers, Joe Houston and Paul Houston, both of Garland; five sisters; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Mr. Meacham was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was owner and operator of McLean Hardware and was a member of the Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife. Since 1984, he owned and operated Al's Auto and Truck Plaza. He had been employed by Hedgecoke Dodge for 16 years. He was a member of San Jacinto Baptist Church and the Pastor's Sunday School Class. He married Arlene Redman in 1974 at Tucumcari, N.M. He was preceded in death by a son, Steve Wilson, in 1983. Mrs. Shaffer was a longtime resident of Amarillo. She was a homemaker and member of South Lawn Baptist Church. Spivey of Terral, Okla.; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Warren J. Baker Warren J. "Buster" Baker, 75, of Amarillo, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998. He married Jane Ruth Hall in 1945 at Hedley. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Judy Belcher of Amarillo; a son, Warren H. Baker of Canyon; three sisters, Mildred Pletcher of Perryton, Margaret Lair of Spearman and Kathryn Jones of Memphis; a brother, Bob Baker of Sunray; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Mrs. King was born in Memphis and moved to Amarillo in 1947. She was a homemaker and charter member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. She was a life member of Northwest Texas Healthcare System Auxiliary where she had served on the board for six years and had 7,285 volunteer hours. She married Felton Daniel King in 1949 at Amarillo. Survivors include two sons, Gary Felton King and Jeffrey Todd King, both of Amarillo; a daughter, Karen F. Miller Jordan of Amarillo; two brothers, Robert Dewlen of El Paso and Al Dewlen of Waco; a sister, Edna Justice of Amarillo; and five grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Baptist St. Anthony Hospice and Life Enrichment Center or St. Paul United Methodist Church general fund. Canyon Rex E. Chitwood Rex E. Chitwood, 76, of Canyon, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Bales, pastor, and the Rev. Kevin Deckard, associate pastor, officiating. Private burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors of Canyon. Mr. Chitwood was born in Tipton, Okla. He graduated from Olton High School and Texas A&M University with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. He served in the Army in the European theater during World War II. In 1987, he retired as a civil engineer from the Texas Highway Department. He was a member of the Sunset Kiwanis Club and a 50-year member of Olton Masonic Lodge No. 1257. As a member of First United Methodist Church, he served on the finance committee and the administrative board. He married Kathryn Abernathy in 1951 at Leonard. He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Edward Chitwood. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Kay Johnson of Lubbock; two brothers, Dale W. Chitwood of Olton and Jack R. Chitwood of Austin; and three grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to First United Methodist Building Fund, 1818 Fourth Ave., Canyon, TX 79015; or a favorite charity. New Mexico Gradean Franklin CLOVIS, N.M. - Gradean Franklin, 58, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. today in Steed-Todd Funeral Home Chapel with Willie Tolison officiating. Mr. Franklin was born in Canyon, Texas, and had lived in Muleshoe, Texas, for several years. He had worked for Bender Oldsmobile, retiring two years ago. There are no survivors. Michael McDermott PORTALES, N.M. - Michael "Mike" McDermott, 38, died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Wheeler Mortuary Chapel of Portales Inc. with the Rev. Joe Henegar officiating. Burial will be in Portales Cemetery. Mr. McDermott was born in Portales, where he was a lifelong resident. He graduated from Portales High School in 1979. He worked for the Tower Theater while in high school and for several years after graduating. He later worked for Portales Plumbing until his employment with Dora schools eight years ago. He attended First Assembly of God Church. He married Karen Stanton in 1981 in Portales. Survivors include his wife; a son, Michael Jason McDermott of the home; two daughters, Melissa McDermott and Megan McDermott, both of the home; mother and stepfather, Geneva and Danny Roberts of Clovis; his father and stepmother, Deryl and Phyllis McDermott of Portales; and two sisters, Angela Ruth Elliston and Jenny Dawn Roberts, both of Clovis. Alfred Henry Bugg TUCUMCARI, N.M. - Alfred Henry Bugg, 78, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Baptist Church. Burial will be in the family plot in the Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery by Dunn Funeral Home. Mr. Bugg was born in Big Spring, Texas, and had been a Tucumcari resident since 1940. He retired from the Marine Corps where he was a fighter pilot during World War II and the Korean War. He was active in farming and ranching. Mr. Bugg was a life member of the BPO Elks Lodge 1172 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the American Legion Post 77 of Logan, Rotary International, New Mexico Cattle Growers Association, the New Mexico Farm Bureau and the First Baptist Church of Tucumcari. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lana Kay Bugg, in 1974. Survivors include his wife; three sons, John Bugg, Alan Bugg and John Wesley "Buddy" Bugg, all of Tucumcari; four sisters, Jessie McKinney and Ruth Morton, both of Springdale, Ark., Almaree Williams of Stratford, Texas, and Dorothy Thomas of Big Spring; three grandsons; and two great-grandsons. Viewing will be until time of service in the church.
