Benson HEREFORD - Gladys M. Benson, 86, died Saturday, April 4, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First United Methodist Church of Dimmitt with the Rev. Rusty Dickerson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in West Park Cemetery in Hereford by GilillandWatson Funeral Home. Mrs. Benson was born in Childress. She moved to Castro County in 1944. She was a homemaker and member of First United Methodist Church, Eastern Star and several duplicate bridge clubs. She married Joe W. Benson in 1932 at Clovis, N.M. He died in 1996. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Myrna Kay Benson, in 1949. Survivors include a daughter, Susan Royal of St. Thomas, V.I.; two brothers, George Jones and J.P. Jones, both of Hereford; two sisters, Helen Brown of Hereford and Dovie Jane Harman of Tulia; and a granddaughter. The family requests memorials be to Panhandle Chapter Alzheimer's Association, 2200 W. Seventh, Amarillo, Texas. Sammie Jones Bishop SPEARMAN - Sammie Jones Bishop, 92, died Friday, April 3, 1998. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken Cole, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Dreamland Cemetery in Canyon by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman. Mrs. Bishop was born in Bowie. She moved to this area 59 years ago from Canyon. She and her husband owned Spearman Hardware from 1945 until 1969. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She married John Bishop in 1929 at Canyon. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Jo, in 1938. Survivors include her husband; and her brother, Frank Jones of Amarillo. Jose Trejo DUMAS - Jose Trejo, 77, died Saturday, April 4, 1998. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Dumas Cemetery with the Rev. Richard Scully, pastor of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors. Mr. Trejo was born in Chihuahua, Mexico. He had been a Dumas resident since 1962. He was a retired farm hand. He was married to Maria Trejo who died in 1995. Survivors include three daughters, Maria Jesus Rivas-Gonzales of Juarez, Mexico, and Lucy Trejo and Leticia Mendoza, both of Dumas; two sons, Miguel Trejo of Etter and Victor M. Trejo of Dumas; and nine grandchildren. The family will be at 609 Zauk in Dumas. Oddie Mae Moss CLARENDON - Oddie Mae Moss, 85, died Saturday, April 4, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Truman Ledbetter, pastor, and the Rev. Bryan Knowles, pastor of Martin Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Citizens Cemetery by Robertson Funeral Directors, Inc. Mrs. Moss was born in Donley County where she lived for most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church. She played the piano for area organizations and churches for many years. She married Clarence Franklin Moss in 1933 at Memphis. He died in 1991. Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Ann Osburn of Clarendon and Elizabeth Irene Williams of Memphis; a son, Robert Edgar Moss of Lamont, Calif.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 25 stepgrandchildren and step-greatgrandchildren. Neal Smith Jr. CLARENDON - Neal "Sonny Boy" Smith Jr., 82, died Friday, April 3, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m Tuesday in the True Church of God in Christ with the Rev. Roy Williams, pastor, and the Rev. Melvin Brooks of Amarillo officiating. Burial will be in Citizens Cemetery by Robertson Funeral Directors, Inc. Mr. Smith was born and raised in Gilmer. He moved to Clarendon 54 years ago. He was a retired brick layer and concrete finisher. He was a member of St. Stephen's Baptist Church. He married Luella Nelson Reece who died in 1974. Survivors include seven daughters, Huelene Phillips, Juanita Walker and Goldie Marie Holleman, all of Amarillo, Evelyn Rosezene Redmond of Phoenix, Mary Louise Timmons of Dallas, Linda Kay Fields of Arlington and Martha Harris of Clarendon; three sons, Bobby Glen Smith and James Franklin Smith, both of Amarillo, and Jimmy Carl Smith of Clarendon; two sisters, Mary Combs of Clarendon and Essie Shoels of Amarillo; a brother, B.W. Smith of Clarendon; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Ella Lorean Clayton DALHART - Ella Lorean Clayton, 82, died Saturday, April 4, 1998. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in First Baptist Church. Burial in Memorial Park Cemetery by Hass Funeral Home. Mrs. Clayton was born in Boise City, Okla., and graduated from Boise City High School. She lived in Kerrick community in the early 1940s until moving to Dalhart in 1944. She lived in the Rehm community until 1969. She returned to Dalhart in 1971. Mrs. Clayton was a member of First Baptist Church where she worked in the nursery. She helped organize the 55 Plus Club and served as director and treasurer. She was a charter member of the Rehm Home Extension Club and had served on the Texas Home Demonstration Association boards at both district and state levels. She also was one of the organizers of the first Interstate Fair held in Dalhart. She married Ennis Clayton in 1933 at Cimarron County in the farm house where she was born. He died in 1969. She also was preceded in death by two grandchildren. Survivors include a son, Raymond Clayton of Paradise; three daughters, Vernie Jean Nordstrom of Wichita Falls, Ella Louise Vogle of Glencoe, Okla., and Peggie Nell Cody of Dalhart; a brother, Elmer Mayhan of Wildhorse, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. The family request memorials be to First Baptist Church, 55 Plus Club or to a favorite charity. Domer Vernon Birdsong PLAINVIEW - Domer Vernon Birdsong, 94, died Sunday, April 5, 1998. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Wood-Dunning Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, with James Dean McNamara, hospice chaplain, officiating. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. Mr. Birdsong was born in Sunny Slope, Ark. A self-employed farmer, he served on the Sunny Slope school board. He worked in timber and saw mills in New Mexico, Arizona and Arkansas. He retired in 1963 from the restaurant business and moved to Plainview in 1972. He married Susan Majors in 1929. She died in 1992. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Margie Claborn, and a granddaughter. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Saiz of Fort Sumner, N.M., and Shirley Birdsong Saiz of Plainview; two sons, Robert Birdsong of Plainview and Sammy Birdsong of Show Low, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great grandchildren. Amarillo Berneita Marie Bunch Berneita Marie Bunch, 69, of Amarillo, died Saturday, April 4, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Holley Funeral Home Chapel of Canyon with the Rev. Allen Norris, pastor of Emmanuel Church of Amarillo, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mrs. Bunch was born in Arkansas City, Kan. She was an Avon representative and a child care worker. She was a member of Emmanual Church. She married Willis Bunch in 1946 at Blackwell, Okla. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Rita Poling of Edmond, Okla., and Carol Rounsaville of Leon, Okla.; a son, Paul Bunch of Forestburg; a brother, Don Walker of Bayfield, Colo.; four sisters, Charlene Tapp of Ponca City, Okla., Linda Basson of Denver, Martha Powell of Ohio and Nancy Lucena of Sacramento, Calif.; her stepfather, Elgin Goodman of Blackwell; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Lorena Louise Powell Love Lorena Louise Powell Love, 92, of Amarillo, died Sunday, April 5, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Park Funeral Home, Chapel of Memories, 6969 I-40 East, with the Rev. Glen Walton officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Love was born in Paris, Texas, and attended school in Hudson, N.M. She moved to Amarillo in 1964 from Masterson. She was a homemaker and member of Central Church of Christ. She married Clyde S. Love in 1922 at Tucumcari, N.M. He preceded her in death. Survivors include three sons, James Love of Dumas, and Jack Love and Elton Love, both of Amarillo; 15 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great grandchildren. The family will be at 5403 George Terrace. They request memorials be to Crown of Texas Hospice. The body will be available for viewing today. Elsewhere Doris Clyde Leak SELIGMAN, Mo. - Doris Clyde Leak, 69, a former resident of Amarillo, died Sunday, April 5, 1998. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Church of Christ in Pea Ridge with Tommy Burr and Malcolm Scott officiating. Burial will be in Hickory Creek Cemetery by Sisco Funeral Home of Pea Ridge. Mrs. Leak was born in Amarillo and graduated from Amarillo High School. She attended Crowder College. She was a resident of Broken Arrow, Okla., from 1957 until 1971 when she moved to McDonald County. Mrs. Leak was a retired word processor from First National Bank in Rogers. She was free lance writer authoring articles in various area newspapers, genealogies, and cookbooks. She was a charter member, secretary, treasurer, and newsletter editor for Arkansas State Fiddlers Association. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Pea Ridge. She married John Secor Leak in 1945 at Amarillo. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Ellen Lynn Leak Baldwin of Stockton, Calif.; two sons, John Russell Leak of Broken Arrow and Kirby Wayne Leak of Bentonville; three brothers, Jimmie Wise of Carrollton, Texas, Richard Wise of Anchorage, Alaska, and Raymond Wise of Amarillo; a sister, Oressa Wise of Aurora, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
