Dunbar PAMPA - Betty C. Dunbar, 96, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998. Services will be at 4 p.m. today in First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Edwin M. Cooley, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery by CarmichaelWhatley Funeral Directors. Mrs. Dunbar was born in Portales, N.M. She was a teacher at Wilson and Baker schools. She later worked at KPDN radio, where she did her own hour-long radio program. During World War II, she worked at Cabot as a counselor of women and was editor of the Cabot magazine, The Cautious Cat. Mrs. Dunbar was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Wednesday Bible study class, Chapter CS of PEO, the Pampa Country Club and several bridge clubs, earning 300 master points in bridge. She married Ralph E. Dunbar in 1927 at Pampa. He died in 1981. Survivors include nieces and nephews, Betty A. Cain and Dorothy Stowers, both of Pampa, Carol Johnson of Ames, Iowa, Catherine Brown of Sierra Madre, Calif., Willa Mae Hanway of Tularosa, N.M., Bud Nichols of Enid, Okla., Betty Jo Nichols of San Diego, Frank Nichols of Denver, Randy Nichols of Golden, Colo., David Nichols of Centralia, Ill., and Henry Shumake Jr. of Live Oak, Fla. The family requests memorials be to The Book of Remembrance at First Presbyterian Church or Hospice of the Panhandle. Lucile McDowell DUMAS - Lucile McDowell, 90, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Friday in Morrison Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Richard Scully and the Rev. Wayne Norrell, deacon of Christ the King Catholic Church at Sunray. Services will be at 1 p.m. today in Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. Scully and the Rev. Norrell officiating. Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. today in Llano Cemetery in Amarillo. Mrs. McDowell was born in Henrietta and had lived in Moore County since 1928. She was a homemaker and a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. She was a charter member of the Palo Duro Home Demonstration Club and was a longtime supporter of Moore County 4H. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl E. McDowell, in 1976. Survivors include a son, Pat McDowell; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. Carpenter, 79, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses with Lyle Jones officiating. Cremation was by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40, in Amarillo. Mr. Carpenter had lived in Dumas most of his life. He was an operator for Petroleum Gas. He was a veteran and attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Survivors include his wife, Ethel; two sons, Carl Carpenter of Amarillo and Dewayne Carpenter of Rosharon; a sister, Edith Cagle of Borger; and a grandson. The body will not be available for viewing. Mae Brooks Wilson BORGER - Mae Brooks Wilson, 75, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Central Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Hill, pastor, officiating. Graveside services will be at 4:30 p.m. today in Memorial Park Cemetery in Amarillo by Minton / Chatwell Funeral Directors. Ms. Wilson was born in Wellington and had been a Borger resident for 50 years. She worked for Miller Washeteria and Dry Cleaning. She was a member of Central Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Lane, in 1980. Survivors include two sons, Billy Lane of Florence, Colo., and Donnie Wilson of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; a sister, Ida Belle Webb of Borger; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Leonard Skaggs FOLLETT - Leonard Gale "Shorty" Skaggs, 88, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in United Methodist Church with the Rev. Scott Richards and the Rev. Clay Wells officiating. Burial will be in Shattuck Memorial Cemetery in Shattuck, Okla., by Good Samaritan Funeral Service of Shattuck. Mr. Skaggs was born in Shattuck. He grew up in Lipscomb, where his family published the weekly newspaper, "The Lipscomb Limelight." When Mr. Skaggs was a teen-ager, his family moved to Follett and established an additional paper, "The Follett Times." He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After being discharged, he resumed his work at the family publishing business. He was a member of United Methodist Church. Mr. Skaggs married Elsie Schibbelhute Kammerer in 1964 at Lipscomb. They made their home in Follett. Survivors include his wife; a stepdaughter, Louise Kahoe of Follett; a stepgranddaughter; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to Twin Oaks Manor in Booker. Amarillo Que Tat Que Tat, 86, of Amarillo, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998. Cremation arrangements were by N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Ms. Tat was born in Quengdong, China. She had been a resident of Amarillo for four years. She was a member of the Buddhist Temple. She married Thu Tang in the 1920s in China. He preceded her in death about 40 years ago. Survivors include two sons, Tang Q Hoai and Tat Tu, both of Amarillo; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The family will be at 7404 Jameson. Albert L. Wyer Albert L. "Al" Wyer, 74, of Amarillo, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1998. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today at 3213 S. Dallas St. Arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home, 2800 S. Osage St. Mr. Wyer was born in Willshire, Ohio. He moved to Amarillo in 1978 from Ohio. He was a first lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. He was a fighter pilot and flew a P-51 Mustang during World War II. He flew 10 combat missions in the European Theater of Operations with the 8th Air Force. He was shot down and taken prisoner of war. He was a member of the Willshire Masonic Lodge and the American Legion. Mr. Wyer married Virginia J. Benner in 1943 at Fort Myers, Fla. They also had lived in Albuquerque, N.M., for 18 years. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Ann Marie Wyer Michel of El Paso; a son, Michael James Wyer of Amarillo; a sister, Elizabeth Rinard of Hamilton, Ind.; a brother, Ivan Wyer of Willshire; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Paula Stone McKown Paula Stone McKown, 45, of Amarillo, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in South Georgia Baptist Church with the Rev. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 Bell St. Mrs. McKown was born in Amarillo. She moved to Amarillo in 1971 from Borger. She married Jimmy McKown in 1971 at Borger. She earned an associate's degree in Xray technology from Amarillo College and a bachelor of science degree in occupational education with a specialty in industrial technology from Wayland Baptist University. She also received a master's degree in engineering technology from West Texas State University. She was a project specialist for the nuclear explosives safety department at Pantex. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Borger and Order of the Eastern Star No. 811 in Borger. She was a past president of the Soroptimist Club of Potter-Randall Counties. Survivors include her husband; a son, Chris McKown of the home; two daughters, Lori Dawson of Amarillo and Jamie Rae McKown of the home; her parents, Ervin Stone and Betty Stone of Borger; a brother, Vance Stone of Fritch; and a sister, Pam Butler of Amarillo. The family requests memorials be to the Elks Children Services or the MakeA-Wish Foundation. Gertrude Froust Gertrude Froust, 91, of Amarillo, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998. Harold Bohr, retired minister from Olsen Park Seventh-day Adventist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park in Borger. Mrs. Froust was born in Tioga, La. She moved to Amarillo in 1973 from Borger. She was a homemaker and a member of Olsen Park Seventh-day Adventist Church. She married William Fred Froust in 1923 at Tioga. He died in 1962. Survivors include a son, C.W. Froust of Abernathy; a daughter, Marcile Suit of Amarillo; two sisters, Lois Ballard of Natchitoches, La., and Zella Haney of Orlando, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. The family will be at 3819 Hancock. They request memorials be to a favorite charity. Melvin E. Phillips Melvin E. Phillips, 86, of Amarillo, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Llano Mausoleum Chapel with Mark Cattau, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Entombment will be in Llano Mausoleum by Schooler Funeral Home Inc., 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Phillips was born in Hess, Okla., and had lived in Amarillo since 1948. He served with the military police in the Army. He married Alvina M. McLeese in 1945 at Lincoln, Neb. She died six years ago. Mr. Phillips owned and operated a shooting gallery at the fair. He went into the car business with his brother, Shelby Phillips. They owned Phillips Motor Co., which later became M.E. Phillips Auto. Mr. Phillips retired in 1988. Survivors include two sons, Mel Phillips of Amarillo and Randall C. Phillips of Dallas; and three granddaughters. The family requests memorials be to Crown of Texas Hospice, 1000 S. Jefferson St., Amarillo, Texas 79101. Oklahoma Robert Zunk HOOKER, Okla. - Robert "Bob" Zunk, 67, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, in Aurora, Colo. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in First Christian Church with the Rev. Betty Stanke and the Rev. J. Robert Herrod of St. John's Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Hooker Cemetery by Roberts Brothers Funeral Home. Mr. Zunk was born and raised in Milwaukee. He moved to Hooker, where he worked at the DX Service Station, farmed and was a butcher at the Ideal Food Store before beginning work for Natural Gas Pipeline Co. of America. He worked 36 years at Natural Gas Pipeline Co. of America, and during that time he became a locksmith, a trade he performed for 25 years. He owned and operated Tumbleweed Lock and Key. He also owned and operated the Pages of the Past Museum from 1962 to 1970. Mr. Zunk was a member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church as a young man. He was a member of First Christian Church in Hooker. He had been a member of the Hooker Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years and also was a member of the Lions Club and Jaycees. He married Dolores Loughridge in 1950 at Hooker. Survivors include his wife; a son, Steve Zunk of Chicago; three daughters, Vickie Davis of Aurora, Kathy Sumner of Garden City, Kan., and Beckie Masse of Canyon Lake, Texas; seven grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Galloway & Sons Chapel with the Rev. John Sisk officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Mrs. Coody was born in Sasakwa, Okla., and had been a resident of Beeville. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Pettus and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary in Lockhart. She married Howard K. Coody in 1939 at Maysville, Okla. He died in 1997. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Lynda Gay Coody; and a son, Johnny Howard Coody. Survivors include three daughters, Lillie Fern Gilland of Beeville, Donna Kay McIntosh of Dumas and Mary Lynn Garrity of Hart; three sons, Dwain Kendrick Coody of Hereford, Earl Ray Coody of Beeville and Charles Eugene Coody of Victoria; 18 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Loretta Allen Hughbanks HOUSTON - Loretta Allen Hughbanks died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, in Amarillo. Services will be at noon Monday in Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery. Survivors include her children, Brenda Marshall, Terry Johnson, Lori Colandra, Lee Hughbanks and Teresa Hughbanks; four brothers; and nine grandchildren. Visitation will be at the funeral home at 9 a.m. Monday. Canyon Ruey McKinney Ruey McKinney, 82, of Canyon, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in University Church of Christ with David Lough, minister, and Bob Loe, elder, officiating. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery by Brooks Funeral Directors of Canyon. Mrs. McKinney was born in Vinson, Okla. She graduated from high school at Vinson in 1933 and then attended Draughon's Business School in Abilene. She was employed in Hollis, Okla., where she worked at the AAA program, the Hollis Department Store, Taylor's Department Store and First State Bank of Hollis. She married Glenn McKinney in 1947 at Hollis. They lived in Oklahoma for several years before moving to a farm in Castro County, near Dimmitt. They lived there for 23 years. They retired in 1978 and moved to Canyon. Mrs. McKinney was a member of University Church of Christ. Survivors include her husband; a sister, Joye Breedlove of Littlefield; and two brothers, Loyd Vaughan of Dimmitt and LaVerne Vaughan of Earth.
