Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 Bell St. Mrs. McKown was born in Amarillo. She moved to Amarillo in 1971 from Borger. She married Jimmy McKown in 1971 at Borger. She earned an associate's degree in X-ray technology from Amarillo College and a bachelor of science degree in occupational education with a specialty in industrial technology from Wayland Baptist University. She also received a master's degree in engineering technology from West Texas State University. She was a project specialist for the nuclear explosives safety department at Pantex. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Borger and Order of the Eastern Star No. 811 in Borger. She was a past president of the Soroptimist Club of Potter-Randall Counties. Survivors include her husband; a son, Chris McKown of the home; two daughters, Lori Dawson of Amarillo and Jamie Rae McKown of the home; her parents, Ervin Stone and Betty Stone of Borger; a brother, Vance Stone of Fritch; and a sister, Pam Butler of Amarillo. The family requests memorials be to the Elks Children Services or the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Gertrude Froust Gertrude Froust, 91, of Amarillo, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998. Harold Bohr, retired minister from Olsen Park Seventh-day Adventist Church, officiating. Burial was in Westlawn Memorial Park in Borger. Mrs. Froust was born in Tioga, La. She moved to Amarillo in 1973 from Borger. She was a homemaker and a member of Olsen Park Seventh-day Adventist Church. She married William Fred Froust in 1923 at Tioga. He died in 1962. Froust of Abernathy; a daughter, Marcile Suit of Amarillo; two sisters, Lois Ballard of Natchitoches, La., and Zella Haney of Orlando, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He served with the military police in the Army. He married Alvina M. McLeese in 1945 at Lincoln, Neb. She died six years ago. Mr. Phillips owned and operated a shooting gallery at the fair. He went into the car business with his brother, Shelby Phillips. They owned Phillips Motor Co., which later became M.E. Phillips Auto. Mr. Phillips retired in 1988. Jimmy Don Dawson Jimmy Don Dawson, 61, of Amarillo, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998. Mr. Dawson was born in Childress. He lived in Hereford for 17 years before moving to Amarillo. He was a retired tractor salesman. He was a member of the Lions Club in Hereford. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery by Brooks Funeral Directors of Canyon. Mrs. McKinney was born in Vinson, Okla. She graduated from high school at Vinson in 1933 and then attended Draughon's Business School in Abilene. She was employed in Hollis, Okla., where she worked at the AAA program, the Hollis Department Store, Taylor's Department Store and First State Bank of Hollis. She married Glenn McKinney in 1947 at Hollis. They lived in Oklahoma for several years before moving to a farm in Castro County, near Dimmitt. They lived there for 23 years. They retired in 1978 and moved to Canyon. Mrs. McKinney was a member of University Church of Christ. Survivors include her husband; a sister, Joye Breedlove of Littlefield; and two brothers, Loyd Vaughan of Dimmitt and LaVerne Vaughan of Earth. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Mrs. Coody was born in Sasakwa, Okla., and had been a resident of Beeville. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Pettus and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary in Lockhart. She married Howard K. Coody in 1939 at Maysville, Okla. He died in 1997. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Lynda Gay Coody; and a son, Johnny Howard Coody. Visitation will be at the funeral home at 9 a.m. Monday. Mary Lue Minnich Sullins LAWNDALE, Calif. - Mary Lue Minnich Sullins, 75, a former Amarillo resident, died Dec. 23, 1997. Services were in California. Mrs. Sullins was born in Amarillo. She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1939 and attended Amarillo Junior College. While living in Amarillo, she worked at Blackburn Brothers Clothiers and was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She was a member of the Gama Iota chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority in Amarillo. She was honored with entry into the Golden Circle for active membership of 50 years. She was active with the Girl Scouts and was a substitute teacher. Besides Amarillo and Lawndale, she also lived in Pampa, Texas; Hondo, Texas; Moultrie, Ga.; Enterprise, Ala.; El Paso, Texas; Hurst, Texas; Lubbock, Texas; and Riverside, Calif. Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Sara of Illinois, Esther of California and Katherine of North Carolina; and four granddaughters. Nell J. Durham LUBBOCK - Nell J. New Mexico Lawrence Burrow PORTALES, N.M. - Lawrence Burrow, 72, of Hereford, Texas, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Wheeler Mortuary of Portales Inc. Chapel with the Rev. Curtis Miner officiating. Burial will be in Portales Cemetery. Mr. Burrow was born in Iowa Park, Texas, and lived his entire life in Texas and New Mexico. He was a World War II veteran serving with the Navy SeeBees in the Pacific. He had been employed as a janitor at Portales Junior High School for many years. He also had been an ice delivery man, cab driver, school bus driver, truck driver, and a cowboy. He was member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3299 in Portales and a Baptist. He had lived in Hereford for the past 25 years. Survivors include three sons, L.D. Burrow and Edwin Z. Burrow, both of Portales, and Scotty L. Burial will be in Clayton Memorial Cemetery by Hass Funeral Directors. Mrs. Bates was born in Mount Dora where she attended school. She and her husband farmed and operated a trucking business until 1944 when they purchased a ranch near Clayton. They owned the Sands Motel in Clayton for more than 20 years until their retirement. She was a member of the Clayton Church of Christ. She married Oren Tison Bates in 1932 at Raton. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Alton Dale Bates, in 1933. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Barbara Green of Clayton; a son, Tommy Bates of Whitney, Neb.; three brothers, James D. Black of Kansas City, Mo., Jessie J. Black of Seattle and J.C. She moved to Beaver County, Okla., in 1989 and lived in Forgan. She retired as head cashier of a grocery store. She first married Johnnie Martin Skinner in 1940 at Conway. He died in 1945. Area Frank R. Carpenter DUMAS - Frank R. Carpenter, 79, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses with Lyle Jones officiating. Leonard Skaggs FOLLETT - Leonard Gale "Shorty" Skaggs, 88, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today in United Methodist Church with the Rev. Scott Richards and the Rev. Clay Wells officiating. Burial will be in Shattuck Memorial Cemetery in Shattuck, Okla., by Good Samaritan Funeral Service of Shattuck. Mr. Skaggs was born in Shattuck. He grew up in Lipscomb, where his family published the weekly newspaper, "The Lipscomb Limelight." When Mr. Skaggs was a teen-ager, his family moved to Follett and established an additional paper, "The Follett Times." He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After being discharged, he resumed his work at the family publishing business. He was a member of United Methodist Church. Mr. Skaggs married Elsie Schibbelhute Kammerer in 1964 at Lipscomb. They made their home in Follett. He married Hattie Brock in 1918 at Purcell, Okla. She died in 1969. He was the owner and operator of Friendly Men's Wear for 35 years. He was a member of the Pampa Kiwanis Club and the Pampa Chamber of Commerce. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of First United Methodist Church. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, June Kelp on Dec. 18. Mrs. Becker was born in Falls City. She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church. She married Fred Becker. He died in 1975. Survivors include three sons, Lloyd Becker of Memphis, Fred Becker of Gladstone, Mo., and Bruce Becker of Arkansas City, Kan.; three brothers, Wallace Gerdes of Falls City, John Gerdes of Madison Heights, Mi., and Charles Gerdes of Auburn, Neb.; four sisters, Lena Haefelle of Falls City, Marie Keraudren of Madison Heights, Evelyn Rofenacht of Wichita, Kan., and Bertha Kruce of Morrill, Kan.; eight grandchildren; 13 greatgrandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Helen Douglas PLAINVIEW - Helen Douglas, 69, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998. Services will be at 4 p.m. Monday in Lemons Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Rev. David Border, pastor of Faith Baptist Church of Lubbock, officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park. Mrs. Douglas was born in Floydada and moved to Plainview in 1944. She moved to Wolfforth in 1987. She was a member of Southside Assembly of God Church. She married Shelby Bruce Douglas in 1946 at Clovis, N.M. He died in 1985. Survivors include three daughters, Marilyn Kingston of Wolfforth, Karen Wood of Burleson, and Barbara Fowler of Floydada; three sons, Robert Douglas of Burleson, Tommy Douglas of Plainview, and Donald Douglas of Lubbock; a sister, Delores Lafone of Newport; a brother, Ernest Huckabay of Demming, N.M.; 21 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Callie Gertrude Riley CLARENDON - Callie Gertrude Riley, 84, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Clarendon Church of Christ with Mike Suiter, minister, and Bright Newhouse, minister of Hedley Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Citizens Cemetery by Robertson Funeral Directors, Inc. Mrs. Riley was born in Cook County. She was a resident of Hedley from 1918 until 1938 then moved to Amarillo. She and her husband owned Riley Furniture Repair until their retirement in 1980. At that time, they moved to Clarendon. She was a member of Clarendon Church of Christ. She married Hal Fletcher Riley in 1938 at Memphis. He died in 1983. She also was preceded in death by an infant son, John Garvin Riley, in 1950. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Irene Mann of Clarendon; and many nieces and nephews. Irene Johnson BOVINA - Irene Johnson, 86, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Assembly of God in Friona with the Rev. Bill Boyd, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Oak Hills Cemetery in Cameron by Ellis-Blackwell Funeral Home. Mrs. Johnson was born in Porters Perry. She moved to Bovina 20 years ago from Cameron. She was a homemaker and member of Assembly of God in Friona. She married Amiel Johnson Sr. in 1931 at Buckholtz. He died in 1978. Survivors include three sons, Amiel Johnson Jr. of Chico, Alton Johnson of Amarillo and Phillip Johnson of Bovina; five daughters, Naomi Pond of Orangevale, Calif., Joetta Mills of North Platte, Neb., Bertie Newton of Cedar Hill, Leatha Garrett of Valley Mills and Frances Smith of Wilcox, Ariz.; four sisters, Mary Goodwin of Fort Worth, Nola Finch of Taylor, and Jessie Cavett and Eula Lou Kullenberg, both of Kerrville; 27 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Eloy Garza Sr. STRATFORD - Eloy Garza Sr., 67, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today in Saint Joseph's Catholic Church. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Saint Joseph's Catholic Church with the Rev. David Contreras, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Stratford Cemetery by Morrison Funeral Directors. Mr. Garza was born in Laredo and had been a Stratford resident since 1970. He retired in 1995 after 17 years employment with Stratford Feed Yard. He also was a farmer. He was a member of Saint Joseph's Catholic Church where he was a member of the Catholic Men's Club and served as communion minister for many years. He married Julieta Cortez in 1954 at Laredo. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Norma Sylvia, in 1960. Survivors include his wife; five daughters, Janie Rowley, Sara Tenorio and Maria Moreno, all of Stratford, and Irma Tijerina and Tina Tijerina, both of Dumas; six sons, Eloy Garza Jr. of Dumas, and Johnny Garza, Lupe Garza, Tino Garza, Jerry Garza, and Ricky Garza, all of Stratford; a sister, Cira Hernandez of Dumas; and 23 grandchildren. The family will be at 419 N. Popular. Clata Cook Hoobler CANADIAN - Clata Cook Hoobler, 82, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in First United Methodist Church with Dr. Lewis Holland, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery by Stickley-Hill Funeral Directors. Mrs. Hoobler was born in Hemphill County. She graduated from Lefors High School and attended West Texas State College. She taught in Hemphill County. With her husband, she farmed in the Blue Ridge community before moving to Canadian in 1954. She had been employed by Canadian Grain Co-op for more than 20 years. Mrs. Hoobler was named Canadian's Woman of the Year in 1978 by the Canadian-Hemphill County Chamber of Commerce. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Woman's Club, Book Review Club and First United Methodist Church where she was a longtime Sunday School teacher. She married J.J. "Bud" Hoobler in 1936 at Hemphill County. He died in 1990. Survivors include a daughter, Anne Gorman of St. Louis, Mo.; and a grandson. The family will receive friends from 3 until 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.
