Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Calvary Hill Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel in Dallas with the Rev. Philip Johnson of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church officiating. Arrangements are by N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Mrs. Matus was born in Tours. She was employed as a seamstress. She was a member of the fraternal organization KJZT for more than 50 years and a past member of the Altar Society. She was active in the Catholic church. She married John M. Matus in 1933 at West. He died in 1972. She also was preceded in death by a son, the Rev. R.J. Matus, in 1994. Survivors include two daughters, Betty Pekar of Amarillo and Marry Ann Krajca of Dallas; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Paul B. Martin Paul B. Martin, 77, of Amarillo, died Saturday, June 6, 1998. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Llano Cemetery with Mark A. Cattau, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mr. Martin was born in Strawn and had lived in Amarillo for the past 45 years. He graduated from Reagen County High School in 1938, then received his bachelor of science degree from the University of Oklahoma School of Pharmacy in 1952. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Martin retired in 1990 as owner of San Jacinto Pharmacy. He was a volunteer at the Veterans Administration Hospital. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He married Beverly Barnes in 1966 at Amarillo. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Becky Martin of Amarillo; two sons, Larry Martin of Amarillo and Recil Martin of San Angelo; three sisters, Lena Goble Truly of San Angelo, Ann Clark of San Antonio and Beverly E. Brown of Menard; a brother, Jerry Martin of Kerrville; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family requests in lieu of flowers memorials be to Trinity Lutheran Church, 5005 W. Interstate 40, Amarillo, Texas, 79106-4799. Dennis "Pete" Chester Dennis "Pete" Chester, 59, of Amarillo, died Thursday, June 4, 1998. Services will be at 3 p.m. today in Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Curtis Stockton officiating. Cremation was handled by Colonial. Mr. Chester was born in Littlefield and moved to Amarillo in 1959. He worked for Auto Unlimited for 17 years. He moved to Portales and continued in the automotive business. He moved back to Amarillo. Survivors include a son, Kyle Chester of Amarillo. Elsewhere Nellie Mary Box Bennett STAMFORD - Nellie Mary Box Bennett, 83, died Saturday, June 6, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Alling officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Anson by Tankersley Funeral Home of Stamford. Mrs. Bennett was born in Stamford and was a lifelong resident. She taught private art lessons. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Stamford Garden Club and was a homemaker. Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Stanford of Amarillo; a son, Zed Bennett of Abilene; three grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters. Osie M. Hollomon HUGHES SPRINGS - Osie M. Hollomon, 82, died Friday, June 5, 1998. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Liberty United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Mask, pastor, and the Rev. George Hancock officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery in Hughes Springs. Mr. Hollomon was a native of Hughes Springs. He was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church. He was retired from Lone Star Steel Company in Lone Star. Survivors include his wife, Teresa; two brothers, Thomas and Marion Hollomon, both of Hughes Springs; and a sister, Eliza Ruth Scott of Amarillo. Canyon Gary Kenneth Powell Gary Kenneth Powell, 58, of Canyon, died Friday, June 5, 1998, at his home south of Canyon. A gathering of family and friends will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Powell home. Arrangements are by BlackburnShaw Funeral Directors, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street. Cremation was by Memory Gardens Crematory. Mr. Powell was born in Berkeley, Calif. He graduated from the University of California-Berkeley with a degree in business administration as well as a bachelor's and master's degree in criminology. He began his career as a probation officer in Alameda County, Calif., and ended in 1995 in Amarillo. He had been a suicide crisis volunteer for many years, as well as a licensed drug and alcohol counselor. Mr. Powell was a member of the Panhandle Trailriders Association, Federal Probation Officers Association and Texas Association of Drug Abuse Counselors. After his retirement, he worked parttime as a counselor at the Youth State Center of the High Plains, volunteered at the state prison in Tulia and taught Rational Behavior Training at Amarillo College. He married Serena Anna Edgar in 1963. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Dody Bernal of Paradise, Calif., Carolyn Powell of Everett, Wash., and Nancy McKinney of Canyon; two sons, Jim Powell of Oakland, Calif., and Eric Powell of Everett, Wash.; his mother, Betty Powell of California; a sister, Michaele Call of California; and a granddaughter. Georgia St., Amarillo, Texas 79118. New Mexico Nestor Martinez CLOVIS, N.M. - Nestor Martinez, 66, died Saturday, June 6, 1998. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in St. Francis Catholic Church in Clayton with Deacon Louis Montoya. Burial will be in Clayton Cemetery in Clayton by Muffley Funeral Home of Clovis. Military honors will be conducted by Cannon Air Force Base Honor Guard. Mr. Martinez was born in Clayton. He moved to Clovis in 1968. He was a laborer in the agriculture field. Survivors include four brothers, Elias Martinez of Clayton, Sevedo Martinez of Texline, Texas, and Louis and Conrad Martinez, both of Keyes, Okla. Area LaRue Reid Foster PLAINVIEW - LaRue Reid Foster, 85, died Saturday, June 6, 1998. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Wood-Dunning Funeral Home Colonial Chapel with Dr. Travis Hart, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park. Mrs. Foster was born in Sunset and had lived in Oklahoma. After she graduated from high school, she attended East Central State Teachers College. She taught school for six years. Mrs. Foster moved to Lockney in 1938. After her marriage, she lived in the Whitfield community until she moved to Plainview in 1969. She was a member of Kress Bridge Club, First Baptist Church, Amick Sunday School Class, Eastern Star and International Flying Farmers and Ranchers. She married Elvin Foster in 1943 at Plainview. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Gary Foster of Kress and Curtis Foster of Austin; a brother, Louis Reid of Pauls Valley, Okla.; and three grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to First Baptist Church or a favorite charity. Jacque Kathlene Downey STINNETT - Jacque Kathlene Downey, 29, died Saturday, June 6, 1998. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Stinnett First Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry Danley and the Rev. Ron Wilson officiating. Arrangements are by Minton / Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger. Mrs. Downey was a native of Borger and longtime resident of Stinnett. She was a homemaker and a caretaker. Survivors include her husband, Greg; two daughters, Jennifer Downey and Jaimee Downey, both of Stinnett; her parents, Jerry Nance and Linda Lamar, both of Stinnett; a sister, Connie Nance of Stinnett; and her grandparents, Irene Williams and Ivan Nance, both of Stinnett. Mr. Lawson was born in Hess, Okla. He moved to Olton from Hollis, Okla., in 1926. He attended Olton schools. He had been a farmer for 70 years and was employed by the Circle Gin. He was a member of Main Street Church of Christ and Olton Masonic Lodge No. 1247. He served on the board of directors of the Olton Gin Co-op Board and the Federal Land Bank board in Littlefield for 26 years. He married Marie Miller in 1938 at Plainview. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jim Lawson and Gary Lawson, both of Olton; a daughter, Carolyn Little of Austin; a sister, Edisy Hackler of Olton; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to a favorite charity. James D. Throckmorton McLEAN - James D. Throckmorton, 85, died Saturday, June 6, 1998. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in Dozier Cemetery in Dozier with rites by the Masonic Lodge No. 889. Arrangements are by Lamb Funeral Home of McLean. Mr. Throckmorton was born in St. Louis. He moved to McLean from Dozier in 1968. He retired as a heavy equipment operator from the Forst Service. In Dozier, he retired as a grocery store owner. He was a member of the McLean Masonic Lodge No. 889 and was a Baptist. He married Mary Lou Steel in 1968 at Pampa. She preceded him in death. Survivors include a son, James Throckmorton of Dozier; a brother, Andrew Throckmorton of Amarillo; a sister, Jewel Hudson of Canyon; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. J.B. Brown PLAINVIEW - J.B. "Chigger" Brown, 81, died Saturday, June 6, 1998. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Lemons Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Danny Copeland, pastor of Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church, and the Rev. Mike Perry, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Cemetery. Mr. Brown was born and raised in Garvin County, Okla., where he attended schools. He moved to the Providence community in 1941, then moved to Plainview in 1953. He retired in 1980 from farming. He was a member of Parkview Baptist Church. He married Cora Wigley in 1933 at Wallsville, Okla. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, RosaLee Anderson of Plainview; two sons, Lonnie Brown and Buddy Brown, both of Plainview; two sisters, Dorlis Jenson of Lindsay, Okla., and Zelma Perry of Plainview; a brother, Lawrence Brown of Plainview; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
