Mr. Pena was born in Del Rio and moved to Plainview in 1949. He married Juanita Pena in 1938 at Paint Rock. She died Friday. He was an Army veteran of World War II and retired as an operator for Phillips Petroleum Co. He was a Methodist. He married Jessie Higgins in 1971 in at Dallas. Jefferson St., Amarillo, TX 79101. Fred Howard BORGER - Fred Howard, 72, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998. Burial will be in Memory Lane Garden in Highland Park Cemetery. Mr. Howard was born in McLean and had been a Borger resident since 1935. He served in the Navy during World War II from 1944 until 1946. For 34 years, he was a teacher for the Borger Independent School District. Mr. Howard was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Masonic Lodge. He married Johnnie Boyd in 1949 at Borger. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Dian Jones of Allen; two brothers, Audrey Leslie Howard of Amarillo and Dale Howard of Fritch; a sister, Hazel Ruth Howard of Borger; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Jewell Hargrave HEREFORD - Jewell Hargrave, 86, died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in West Park Cemetery followed by memorial services at 2:30 p.m. in First Baptist Church of Hereford with Dr. Nathan Stone and the Rev. Terry Cosby officiating. Arrangements are by Parkside Chapel. Mrs. Hargrave was born in Jacksboro. In 1957, she graduated from beauty school in Amarillo. For many years, she owned and operated Jewell's Cut and Curl in Hereford. Mrs. Hargrave was a member of First Baptist Church. She was a 40-plus-year member of the Cultural FCE Club where she was past council chairman, held every office at least once and attended several state and national conventions. She was active in the Hereford Riders. Her first marriage was to Malcolm Cassels in 1929 at Hereford. He died in 1955. Her second marriage was to Tom Hargrave in 1960 at Petersburg. He preceded her in death in 1987. Survivors include seven sons, Jimmy Cassels of Guymon, Okla., Dwayne Cassels of Hereford, Joe Cassels of Marietta, Okla., Butch Hargrave and Joe Hargrave, both of Lubbock, Kenneth Hargrave of Houston and Tommy Hargrave of Cleburne; a daughter, Mary Nell Hendricks of Monahans; eight brothers, Jack Owen of Carrollton, Mo., Warren Owen and Bobby Owen, both of Hereford, Gwyne Owen and G.P. A longtime Texhoma resident, he had lived in Moore County for five years. At the time of his death, he was a student at Southwest Kansas Technical School for refrigeration technicians. A diesel mechanic, Mr. McMillian was a member of Church on the Move of Tulsa. He married Dawn Smith in 1995 at Amarillo. She was a Sunday school teacher and member of First Baptist Church. She married Jesse Dee Moore in 1933 at Wheeler. He died in June. Mrs. Ward was born in St. Charles, Mo., and moved to Amarillo in 1951 from St. Louis. She was a model in her early years and won several beauty contests in Missouri. She played semi-professional basketball for Wagner Electric of St. Louis and worked for Wagner Electric during World War II. Mrs. Ward belonged to a canasta club, Air Force NCO Wives Club and St. Laurence Cathedral. For 10 years, she did volunteer work for Amarillo Catholic schools. She married Robert E. Ward in 1942 at Battle Creek, Mich. He died in 1986. Survivors include two sons, Robert M. Ward and Raymond Ward, both of Amarillo; two grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren. Mrs. Smith was born in Clovis and moved to Amarillo in 1963. She was a home care-giver and member of the Church of Christ. She married John W. Smith in 1944. He preceded her in death in 1990. Bartlett Jr. N.D. Bartlett Jr., 85, of Hereford, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998. Burial will be in Memory Gardens by Brooks Funeral Directors of Canyon. Mr. Bartlett was born in Lamesa. He graduated from Lamesa High School and Draughon's Business College. He married Ruth Elizabeth Tunnell in 1934 at Lovington, N.M. They moved to Hobbs, N.M., where he established the Dr. Pepper Bottling Co. In 1944, he moved to Hereford where he farmed and ranched and later was a building contractor and land developer. In 1962, he homesteaded land in Nevada, built grain elevators and was instrumental in establishing a community in The Diamond Valley. He later developed a large mobile home subdivision in Amarillo. He and his wife moved to Palo Duro Village in Canyon in 1983. Mr. Bartlett was a member of University Church of Christ in Canyon and a longtime member of the Hereford Lions Club. His wife died in 1997. Survivors include a son, Doug Bartlett of Hereford; two brothers, A.M. Bartlett of Hobbs and Ernest Bartlett of Lamesa. Mr. Williams was born in Fort Sumner. There are no survivors. Christine Denney Brixey Simpson VAUGHN, N.M. - Christine Denney Brixey Simpson, 84, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998. Mrs. Simpson was born in Webster County, Mo., and moved to New Mexico in 1921 where she graduated from Vaughn High School in 1933. From 1940 until 1978, she owned and operated Vaughn Cleaners. Following her husband's death, Mrs. Simpson completed his term as mayor and was re-elected for two more terms from 1968 until 1978. She implemented the HUD Housing Project and the Senior Citizen's Center. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Earl Brixey, and M.L. Simpson. Survivors include a daughter, Bobbie Bates of Amarillo; a sister, Miriam Wertheim of Fort Sumer; three brothers, Rex Denney of Albuquerque, Glenn Denney of San Antonio and Ralph Denney of Pittsburgh, Pa; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Bollinger was born in Tyrone, Okla. He attended school in Tyrone and graduated in 1946 from Hooker High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He married Faye Peters in 1948. They lived in Hooker and Ulysses, Kan., where he began a Chevy dealership in 1958. They moved to Ulysses in 1959 and in 1969 to Colorado. He had lived in Colorado Springs for 27 years. He attended the Christian Church and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Lions Club. He sang with a Barbershop Quartet in Hooker. Burial will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery by Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home of Chambersburg. A career Army officer, retired Lt. Col. Keller was born in Collingsworth County, Texas, and was a veteran of World War II, Korea from 1950 to 1951 and Vietnam. His duty stations included Fort Bliss, Texas, Fort Lewis, Wash., Fort Sill, Okla., Germany, LaSalle University, Philadelphia, Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland, Ordinance Tank Automotive Center, Detroit, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, Defence Contract Administration Services Region in Philadelphia and Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg. Lt. Col. Keller held 24 awards and decorations including the Silver Star, Bronze Star with "V" device, Meritorious Service Medal, Purple Heart with cluster and Joint Services Commendation. He attended the Army Chapel at LEAD from 1972 until its closing in 1996. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church where he was lay worship leader and Sunday School teacher. He was a telephone volunteer with CONTACT CHAMBERSBURG from 1972 until 1993 and served as executive director from 1989 until 1991. Lt. Col. Keller was a member of the George Washington Lodge No. 143 F&AM, Scottish Rite, the Shrine, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Charles Nitterhouse Post. No. 1599, Veterans of Foreign Wars, BPOE No. 600 and the National Defense Executives Reserves. He was past president of Letterkenny Chp. Retired Officers Association.
