Vita Gilbert Vita Gilbert, of Amarillo, died Tuesday, March 10, 1998. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Checotah Cemetery in Checotah, Okla. She lived in Bell, Calif., for 36 years before moving to Amarillo eight years ago. She worked for Ball Drug Co. in California. She was Methodist. Mrs. Gilbert was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Gilbert, in 1947; and by a son, Dalton Gilbert, in 1995. Survivors include two daughters, Billie Jean Keith of Amarillo and Marilyn Cogburn of Broken Bow, Okla.; a son, James W. Gilbert of Tuskahoma, Okla.; two sisters, Nell Lord Strasner of Kittery, Maine, and Hope Jessup of Conway, Ark.; a brother, Douglas Townsend of Lake Isabell, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two greatgreat-grandchildren. W.J. Emerson W.J. "Bill" Emerson, 69, of Amarillo, died Sunday, March 8, 1998, in Oklahoma City. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in Memory Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Field of Southeast Baptist Church officiating. Arrangements are by Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors, Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street. Mr. Emerson was born in Gilmer. He served with the Army during World War II. He retired from Bell Helicopter. He married Mary Elizabeth Emerson in 1953. She died in 1997. Survivors include two daughters, Doris Rzesyuteck of Holyoke, Mass., and Diane Dixon of Oklahoma City; two sons, J.C. Emerson of Arlington and J.D. Teri Houghton Bowman Teri Houghton Bowman, 48, of 6666 Pavillard Drive, died Wednesday, March 11, 1998. Osage St. Mrs. Bowman was born in McPherson, Kan., and had lived in Amarillo most of her life. She graduated from Tascosa High School in 1968. She worked at the Potter County courthouse for 16 years as a microfiche technician and darkroom supervisor. She attended Second Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Justin Bowman and Cameron Bowman, both of Amarillo; three sisters, Jan Jones of Albuquerque, N.M., Lori Young of Victoria and Misty Houghton of Amarillo; and two grandchildren. Arrangements are by Holley Funeral Home Inc. Mr. Carnahan was born in Blanchester, Ohio. He married Theda Fox in 1940 at Blanchester. He retired from Pantex. He was a Methodist and a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Canyon Golf Club Association. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Christy Vincent of Connecticut; four sons, Kenneth Ray Carnahan and Gil C. Carnahan, both of Amarillo, Patrick L. Carnahan of Coahoma and Jay F. Carnahan of Plano; two sisters, Beatrice Van Cleve of California and Virginia Critchell of Ohio; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to the Department of Veterans Affairs Volunteer Services. Oklahoma Naomi Opal Epp BEAVER, Okla. - Naomi Opal Epp, 77, died Wednesday, March 11, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in South Church of God in Liberal, Kan., with Roger Williams officiating. Burial will be in Turpin Mennonite Cemetery by Clark Funeral Service. Mrs. Epp was born in Garfield County. She was a nurse's aide before becoming a homemaker after marrying John Epp in 1944 at Goltry. She was a member of South Church of God in Liberal. Survivors include her husband; three sons, Aaron Epp and Ivan Epp, both of Turpin, and Rodney Epp of Lawrence, Kan.; four brothers, Marvin Eck of Watts, Frank Eck of Tulsa, Levi Eck of Pratt, Kan., and Mahlon Eck of Henderson, Neb.; two sisters, Erma Schmidt and Ada Schmidt, both of Meno; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Area Doug Meriwether LOCKNEY - Doug Meriwether, 64, died Tuesday, March 10, 1998. Burial will be in Lockney Cemetery by Moore-RoseWhite Funeral Home. Mr. Meriwether was born in Lockney and had been a lifelong Lockney resident. He graduated from Lockney High School and attended Lippert's Business School at Plainview. He served in the Army during the Korean War and was awarded the National Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a retired postmaster for the U.S. Postal Service and was presented numerous awards and commendations from them. Mr. Meriwether was a member of the Lions Club, the Elks Lodge and the Little League Association. He married Donnie Carol Young in 1957 at Lockney. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Melissa Meriwether, in 1961. Survivors include his wife; a son, Monty Meriwether of Lubbock; a brother, Morris Meriwether of Hobbs, N.M.; and two grandchildren. She had lived in Pampa since 1954. She worked for Sand's Fabrics for many years and was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. She married Zane Hall in 1947 at Spearman. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Cathy Ballard of Borger and Aleta Jackson of Spearman; three sisters, Elizabeth Carr of Amarillo, Virginia Head of Spearman and Frankie Sloan of Breckenridge; two brothers, Kiffie White of Borger and Tommie White of Greenville; seven grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren. Esther Haynes Hastings PLAINVIEW - Esther Haynes Hastings, 95, of Ruidoso, N.M., a former resident of Plainview, died Monday, March 9, 1998. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Parkview Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe P. Weldon, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens by Lemons Funeral Home. Ms. Hastings was born in Denton County. She grew up and attended school in Becton and Petersburg. She moved to Plainview in the 1930s. She was living in Ruidoso at the time of her death. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Maurine Harris in 1997 and Mary Starkey in 1990; and by a son, Jerry Germany, in 1990. Survivors include a son, Jim Haynes of Alamogordo, N.M.; three daughters, Bobbie Short of Ruidoso, Sue Albrecht of Sandia and Minnie Clark of Plainview; two sisters; 24 grandchildren; 42 greatgrandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in West Park Cemetery. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. in Parkside Chapel with the Rev. Terry Cosby and the Rev. Don Larkin officiating. Mr. Walser was born in Montague County. He moved to Chillicothe in 1903 and married Sarah Lance in 1908. He moved to Donley County in 1912, near McLean in Gray County in 1915 and to Deaf Smith County in 1917. He was a longtime farmer, buying and selling cattle and growing wheat, cotton and sugar beets. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1974 and by two sons. Survivors include a son, Guy Walser of Hereford; a daughter, Leatrus Clark of Hereford; 17 grandchildren; 45 greatgrandchildren; 54 great-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-great-grandchildren. Anne Massick Wilson CLAUDE - Anne Massick Wilson, 72, died Wednesday, March 11, 1998. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors Bell Avenue Chapel, 5400 Bell St., in Amarillo, with the Rev. Alan Burkhalter of Chaparral Hills Baptist Church in Amarillo officiating. Burial will be in Claude Cemetery. Mrs. Wilson was born in Wheeler. She graduated from Amarillo High School. She returned to the Claude / Amarillo area in 1971 from Mount Pleasant, Mich. She was a homemaker. She married Joe Wilson in Amarillo. He died in 1994. Survivors include two sons, Rick Massick of Pampa and David Massick of Claude; a daughter, Nikki Mitchell of Midland, Mich.; a brother, Harry Smith of Sonoita, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The family requests memorials be to a favorite charity. Ethel Davis Honnol HEREFORD - Ethel Davis Honnol, 92, died Wednesday, March 11, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Lamar Room at Kings Manor with the Rev. Marty Hamrick, associate pastor at Polk Street United Methodist Church in Amarillo, officiating. Graveside services will be Saturday in Greenleaf Cemetery in Brownwood. Arrangements are by Rix Funeral Directors. Mrs. Honnol was born in Brownwood and graduated from high school in 1925. She took business classes and worked at Brownwood's first auto dealership. She married Clint F. Honnol in 1928. He died in January. During the 1950s, she was the secretary at Central United Methodist Church. She was active in the women's ministry and served as secretary for the Susanna Sunday School Class. She also was a member of the Brownwood Historical Society. Mrs. Honnol moved from Brownwood to Hereford in 1990. Survivors include a son, Clint B. Honnol of Amarillo; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Robert Meeks DALHART - Robert "Bob" Meeks, 86, died Monday, March 9, 1998. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Hass Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Meeks was born and raised near Logan, N.M. He married Vera Koger in 1938 at Tucumcari, N.M. They moved to Middlewater in 1948 after purchasing a part of the old XIT Ranch. Mr. Meeks raised registered Herefords for many years. He was a member of the PRCA, the American Hereford Association, the Texas Cattle Feeders Association and the National Beef Cattlemen Association. Survivors include his wife; a sister, Mae Fulkerson of Tucson, Ariz.; and a brother, George Meeks of Logan. The family requests memorials be to the American Diabetes Association. Thomas Conway HEREFORD - Thomas "Tom" Conway, 55, died Tuesday, March 10, 1998. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Parkside Chapel with the Rev. H.W. Bartlett and Tom Bailey officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. (MST) in Lovington Cemetery in Lovington, N.M. Mr. Conway was born in Clayton, N.M. He graduated from New Mexico Highlands University at Las Vegas with a degree in Spanish education. He taught Spanish in Fort Sumner, N.M., and Magdalena, N.M. He worked for several service stations as an attendant after school. Mr. Conway was a member of the Baptist church in Lovington. Survivors include his mother, Mary Conway of Hereford; a brother, Charles Conway of Hereford; and two sisters, Leota Kelso and Jeanie Conway, both of Hereford. A.G. Taylor MULESHOE - A.G. Taylor, 85, died Tuesday, March 10, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Derrell Evins, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Seminole, the Rev. Brad Reeves, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Muleshoe, and Curtis Shelburne, minister of 16th and D Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Muleshoe Memorial Park Cemetery by Ellis Funeral Home. Mr. Taylor was born in Valley View and raised in Bronte. He moved from Eldorado to the Goodland community of Bailey County in 1949. He moved from the Goodland community to Muleshoe in 1960. He was a farmer and rancher and was employed by Bailey County Precinct No. 2. He served on the Threeway school board and was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Eldorado Masonic Lodge and the Bailey County Farm Bureau. Mr. Taylor married Laura Ella "Toots" Gregory in 1930 at Lovington, N.M. She died in 1980. He married Jewel Glover in 1981 at Muleshoe. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Patsy Sowder, in February. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gus Taylor of Amarillo and Tommy Taylor of Hudson, Ohio; a stepson, Jerry Don Glover of Lazbuddie; a daughter, Nonnie Bryant of Albuquerque, N.M.; a stepdaughter, Sue Chester of Sudan; 10 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 10 stepgreatgrandchildren. The family requests memorials be to Hospice of the Plains, 7109 Olton Road, Plainview, Texas 79072; or Muleshoe Memorial Park Cemetery, P.O. Box 373, Muleshoe, Texas 79347.
