Cremation is by Memorial Park Crematory. Mrs. Phillips was born in Minnesota Lake, Minn. She moved to Amarillo in 1940 from Hartley, Iowa. She was a seamstress. She married B.B. "Friday" Phillips in 1940 at Canyon. Survivors include her husband; a son, William B. Phillips of Amarillo; three daughters, Danette Patton of Las Vegas, Jan Winkler, of Lindenhurst, Ill., and Angela Cole of Dallas; a sister, Betty Merry, of Spencer, Iowa; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Mary Elizabeth Miesse Mary Elizabeth Miesse, 81, of Amarillo, was found Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998. Cremation was by N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Ms. Miesse was born in Amarillo. She taught at Amarillo College and at other schools. She was a member of the High Plains Chapter of the High Plains Poetry Society of Texas. She was a Methodist. Survivors include two cousins, Betty Harrison and Melissa Hill, both of Amarillo. The family requests memorials be to the Humane Society. Katherine Oakley Katherine Oakley, 83, of Amarillo, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in San Jacinto United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Fitzgerald, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mrs. Oakley was born in Bennington, Okla. and had been a resident of Amarillo since 1948. She was a homemaker and a member of San Jacinto United Methodist Church. She married Dick Oakley in 1930 at Hedley. He died in 1971. Survivors include three daughters, Winnie Purser, Gwen Gandy and Lucille Day, all of Amarillo; two sons, Tony Oakley of Grants Pass, Ore., and Monte Oakley of Denton; two sisters, Thelma Sharp of Amarillo and June Gleaton of Katy; three brothers, Rev. Lora Hodges Gholston Lora Hodges Gholston, 91, of Amarillo, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Howard F.M. Childers, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home Inc., 4100 S. Georgia St. Mrs. Gholston was born in Strawn and had lived in Amarillo for 71 years. She married John Edward Thurman Gholston in 1926 at Ranger. They operated Gholston Drug Store from 1939 to 1974. She attended Amarillo College for two years. She was a member of the Texas Pharmaceutical Association Ladies Auxiliary and the Amarillo Pharmaceutical Association Ladies Auxiliary. She attended Westminster Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Gholston was preceded in death by her husband in 1990. Survivors include two sons, Dr. Don Edward Gholston of Amarillo and Robert Michael Gholston of New Whiteland, Ind.; eight grandchildren; and 10 greatgrandchildren. He died in 1983. Survivors include three daughters, Betty Grubb and Linda Dyson, both of Albuquerque, N.M., and Corrine Adams of Stockton, Calif.; three sons, James Adams of Henderson, Nev., Jack Adams of Albuquerque and Randall Adams of Fort Worth; 11 grandchildren; and six greatgrandchildren. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home with the Rev. Jerome Cosgrove officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Mrs. Buccola was born in Dell Rapids, S.D. She moved to Amarillo in the early 1980s from Akron, Iowa. She returned to Iowa in 1994. She married Vero D. Calkins in 1941 at Rockport. He died in 1978. She married Carl Buccola in 1982 at Amarillo. He died in 1994. She also was preceded in death by a son, Duane. Duran Davis PARIS, Texas - Duran Davis, 78, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, in Bonham. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home Chapel. The body will be donated for medical research. Mr. Davis was born in Lafayette. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was the owner of Davis Lumber Co. in Paris. He was president of First Federal Savings and Loan Association. After retiring, he served on the board of directors. Mr. Davis was active with the Boys Club and was a past president of the Noon Optimist Club. He was a charter member and co-founder of the Paris Bass Club. He was a member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church. He married Virginia Freimath in 1940. She died in 1989. He married Virginia Jackson in 1990. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jimmy Davis of Paris and Ron Davis of Amarillo; a stepson, Jimmy Jackson; and four grandchildren. The family requests memorials in lieu of flowers be to St. Joseph's Foundation in Paris. John Henry Sorrell DODD CITY - John Henry "Pete" Sorrell, 77, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. W.C. Beasley and the Rev. Richard Leathers officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Dodd City Cemetery. Mr. Sorrell was born in Daisy, Okla. He married Martha Hawkins in 1946 at Bonham. He retired as a senior master sergeant with the Air Force after 21 years of service. He served in the North Africa Campaign during World War II. Mr. Sorrell was the owner and operator of A&S Vacuums in Amarillo. He retired as a real estate agent. He was a member of Dodd City Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife; a son, John H. Sorrell II of Amarillo; two daughters, Linda Massey of Wichita, Kan., and Nancy Steinkoenig of Windom; two sisters, Betty Bosley of Dodd City and Lillian Charles of Lewis, Del.; and five grandchildren. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. today. The family requests memorials be to the American Cancer Society. Dixie E. Barnes JAYTON - Dixie E. Barnes, 78, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. David Fletcher, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Jayton Cemetery by Justice-Mason Funeral Home of Post. Mrs. Barnes was born in Paducah. They moved to Post, where she attended school. She later moved to Amarillo. She married Smokey Joe Barnes in 1943 at Amarillo. He died in 1995. She also was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Porter, in 1959. She was a country and western singer for several years. She owned and operated KTNM radio station in Tucumcari, N.M. After selling the station in 1981, she moved to Jayton. Mrs. Barnes was a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, LaDelle Good of McKinney; three grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. The body will be available for viewing at the church Wednesday from 12:30 p.m. until service time. Connie Smith MORTON - Connie Smith, 87, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Ellis Funeral Home Chapel with Joey Pierce, minister of Eastside Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Morton Memorial Cemetery. Mrs. Smith was born in Little Rock, Ark. She moved to Morton in 1973 from Oklahoma. She was a homemaker. She married John Monroe Smith in 1929 at Carter County, Okla. He died in 1963. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Gail Holleyman, in 1989; and by a son, Johnny Smith, in July. Survivors include a son, Jimmy Smith of Hallsville; two granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren. New Mexico Raymond Elton Johnson CLOVIS, N.M. - Raymond Elton Johnson, 92, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, in Amarillo. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in 21st Street Church of Christ with Cecil Bunch officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in St. Petersburg, Texas, by Muffley Funeral Home. Mr. Johnson was born in Goliad, Texas. In 1978, he moved to Clovis from Lamesa, Texas. He was a contractor and farmer. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Masonic lodge in Lamesa. He also was a member of 21st Street Church of Christ. Survivors include a son, Winfred Johnson of Clovis; three sisters, Mary Luci Hegi of St. Petersburg, Texas, Genelle Woodard of Morris, Okla., and Rudy Lee Gill of Kingston, Texas; a brother, Robert Johnson of Fresno, Calif.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. They had lived in Clinton for 17 years. She was a registered nurse at Andrews Air Force Base Hospital in Clinton for 17 years and a member of Mount Ennon Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband; a son, Michael Andre Carter of San Antonio, Texas; three daughters, Carla Dickerson of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Anietra Dickerson of Clinton and Debra Brooks of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; her parents, Fred R. and Lizzie Williams of Clovis; a brother, Charles Edwin Brooks of Dallas; a sister, Bobbie Jean Albritton of Dallas; and six grandchildren. He was a farmer and a member of Earth United Methodist Church. He married Clara Mae Vaughn in 1939 at Earth. Lyndell Jackson PLAINVIEW - Lyndell "Windy" Jackson, 64, a former Petersburg resident, died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church of Petersburg with the Rev. Jesse Nave, former pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Petersburg Cemetery by Lemons Funeral Home. Mrs. Jackson was born and raised in Petersburg and attended Petersburg schools. She married Herman Luis Stewart in 1949. He died in 1954. She married Roy Jackson Jr. in 1965 at Hobbs, N.M. After marrying Mr. Jackson, they continued to lived in Petersburg. They moved to Phoenix in 1970, to Floydada in 1975 and to Plainview in 1992. Mrs. Jackson was a member of First Baptist Church of Petersburg. Survivors include her husband; a son, H.L. Stewart Jr. of Plainview; three brothers, J.W. Martin, R.B. Martin and Albert Martin, all of Petersburg; two sisters, Corky Fullingim of Petersburg and Helen Breed of Floydada; and two grandchildren. The body will be available for viewing at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Manuel B. Gonzales PLAINVIEW - Manuel B. Gonzales, 93, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998. Tim Schwertner, pastor of St. Alice Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park. Mr. Gonzales was born in Fredericksburg. He moved to Plainview in 1955 from Ballinger. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Diaz, in 1989. Survivors include two daughters, Juanita Pena of Plainview and Olivia Cortinas of Hereford; four sons, Domingo D. Gonzales and Fred Gonzales, both of Plainview, Apolinar Gonzales of Lubbock and Martin Gonzales of Dallas; a sister, Wanda Rangel of California; 33 grandchildren; 84 great-grandchildren; and 40 great-great-grandchildren. Pat Pirkle PLAINVIEW - Pat Pirkle, 55, died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church Sanctuary with Dr. Travis Hart, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park by Lemons Funeral Home. Mrs. Pirkle was born and raised in Plainview and attended Plainview schools, where she was active in home economics. She married Richard Pirkle in 1962 at Plainview. She worked at several businesses in Plainview including Nature's Way. She was a member of First Baptist Church and a past president of the hospital auxiliary. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Tana Morton of Plainview; a son, Kelley Pirkle of Lubbock; two sisters, Charline Langley of Lockney and Sandy Ferguson of Abilene; and three grandchildren.
