Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Amarillo. Mr. LaGrone was born in Comanche. Survivors include his wife, Choella; two daughters, Susan Moldenhauer of Canyon and Janet Travis of Enid, Okla.; five sons, Stanley LaGrone of Canyon, Steve LaGrone of San Antonio, Jake LaGrone of Nashville, Tenn., and Randy Travis and Jay Travis, both of Amarillo; a sister, Cora Wirt, of Canyon; three brothers, Odell LaGrone of Amarillo, and Tommy LaGrone and Sam LaGrone, both of Roswell, N.M.; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The family will be at 1704 Creekmere in Canyon. Oklahoma Charlie A. Karns WOODWARD, Okla. - Charlie A. "Chuck" Karns, 96, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998. Services will be at 3 p.m. today in Zwanziger Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Johnnie Sharpton officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Mr. Karns was born near Woodward in a dugout. He worked with the WPA in the 1930s. For a number of years, he was employed by Long Bell Lumber. He attended the Methodist Church. He is survived by a brother, Harry Karns of Woodward. Pearl Ethel Davis FORGAN, Okla. - Pearl Ethel Davis, 95, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998. Services will be at 3 p.m. today in Forgan United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Forgan Cemetery by Clark Funeral Service of Beaver. Mrs. Davis was born in Dacoma, Oklahoma Territory. She attended school and has been a resident of Beaver County for the past 75 years. She was a homemaker and was the cook for the school for many years. She married Harley Davis in 1920 at Dacoma. He preceded her in death in 1991. Survivors include a son, Harley L. Davis of Fairfield, Calif.; two daughters, Betty Stickler and Joyce Day, both of Turpin; a brother, Loyd Ross of Dacoma; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Minnie Bunger GUYMON, Okla. - Minnie Bunger, 85, died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church with Chris Trent, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Elmhurst Cemetery by Bunch-Roberts Funeral Home of Guymon. Mrs. Bunger was born and raised in Stevens County, Kan., where she graduated from Hugoton High School. She and her husband lived in Republic Camp in the Straight community until moving to Guymon in 1956. From 1953 until 1961, she was a nurse's aide at the Guymon Memorial Hospital, then worked as a special duty nurse. Mrs. Bunger was an active member of Guymon First Baptist Church where she served in Women's Missionary Union, Girls Auxiliary and in the nursery. She was a member of Paul's Scarlet Garden Club. She married Edwin Bunger in 1934 at Liberal, Kan. He preceded her in death in 1996. Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Boyett of Guymon and Edwina Ferbrache of Woodward; a son, Herman Bunger of Liberal; a sister, Rebecca Lebow of Marionville, Mo.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. New Mexico Sarah Louise Bilberry PORTALES, N.M. - Sarah Louise Creighton Bilberry, 83, died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at Las Cruces. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Calvary Baptist Church in Portales with the Rev. J.R. "Dick" Ross and the Rev. Mark Rasnake officiating. Burial will be in Causey Cemetery by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales, Inc. Mrs. Bilberry was born in Coke County, Texas. In 1925 her family moved to Roosevelt County. She graduated from high school in Portales in 1933 and attended Eastern New Mexico University for two years before beginning a teaching career at Lingo in 1936. She completed her bachelor's degree in 1957. From 1955 to 1972 Mrs. Bilberry taught at Causey. She taught at Dora from 1972 to 1979. She also ranched and drove a bus for students in the Causey district, beginning in 1963. For many years she was a 4-H leader and a Senior Class sponsor. She also was Office Education Association sponsor, taking her students to national competitions. She married J.C. Bilberry in 1938 at Morton, Texas. He died in 1963. She also was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Ted Bilberry, in 1994, and by a daughter, Ovidene Copeland, earlier this year. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Liesner of Las Cruces; two brothers, James Creighton of Tucumcari and Ben Creighton of Elida; a daughter-in-law, Dorothy Bilberry of Clovis; a son-in-law, Raymond Copeland of St. Vrain; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mary Lou Bagwell MELROSE, N.M. - Mary Lou Bagwell, 87, died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at Clovis. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in First United Methodist Church of Melrose with the Rev. Kevin Bushart officiating. Burial will be in Melrose Cemetery by Steed-Todd Funeral Home of Clovis. Mrs. Bagwell was born at House. She graduated from Melrose High School in 1929 and attended Draughn's Business College in Abilene, Texas. She was a homemaker, farming with her husband north of Melrose. She was employed by First National Bank in Melrose, retiring as vice president and branch manager in 1974. In 1982 Mrs. Bagwell was voted Melrose Citizen of the Year. She was active in Melrose United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School and working with the women's group. She also was active in the Melrose Chamber of Commerce and in the Women's Club. She married John Bagwell in 1932 at Roswell. He died in 1991. Survivors include four daughters, Johnnie Lou Ragsdale of Truth or Consequences, Patricia Romero of Santa Fe, Flora Bradley of Lubbock, Texas, and Karen Myers of Clovis; three sons, Elmo Bagwell and Nolan Bagwell, both of Lockhart, Texas, and Gary Bagwell of West Columbia, Texas; a sister, Flora Shamas of Albuquerque; 26 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Billie Maxwell CLOVIS, N.M. - Billie Maxwell, 76, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church with Dr. Tom Rush officiating. Burial will be in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens by Steed-Todd Funeral Home. Mrs. Maxwell was born in Clovis. A lifetime resident, she worked at Cannon Air Force Base in accounting and finance, retiring after 23 years of service. She was a member of First Baptist Church and of the Plains Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. She married Olaf Maxwell in 1942 at Glendale, Calif. He died in 1994. Survivors include a daughter, Roxane Lofton of Clovis; a son, Larry Maxwell of Pueblo, Colo.; a brother, Don Burgett of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister, Jeanne Jackson of Clovis; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was a member of First Christian Church. A retired farmer and stockman, he had served on the Motley County SCS board for many years. He was a member of Roaring Springs Lions Club, the Masonic Lodge, served as director for Motley-Dickens County Old Settlers Association and the Afton Farmers Cooperative. He married Bessie Mae Smiley in 1946. She preceded him in death in 1995. Survivors include a daughter, Ann Wheeler of Lubbock; two sisters, Virgie Bannister of Plainview and Tressie Warren of Matador; and three granddaughters. Trula Faye Moore LUBBOCK - Trula Faye Moore, 85, a former Amarillo resident, died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998. Mrs. Moore was born in Marsden, Okla. A homemaker, she lived in Howardwick for 11 years and then in Amarillo for four years before moving to Lubbock in 1994. He lived in Amarillo for several years before moving to Owensboro, Ky., then returning to Amarillo for a year. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a truck driver for 47 years. Mr. Cobb was a Kentucky Colonel and a member of American Legion, Amarillo Senior Citizens Association, Temple Baptist Church in Owensboro and attended Coulter Road Baptist Church. He married Leta Mae Armstrong in 1970 at Wheeler. He was preceded in death by a son, Lonnie Cobb, in 1994. Georgia St. Born in Tulia, Mr. Tucker graduated from Tulia High School, where he played drums in the band. He became a back-up drummer for Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins and Rick Tucker & the Rhythm Teens Band. Mr. Tucker also worked in radio, as an insurance representative, as top producer for John Deere Division, Moline, Ill., and as an auctioneer. He was an organizer of the National Cowgirl Museum and named their magazine, "SideSaddle." In 1989 Mr. Tucker moved to Amarillo. He was a member of St. Stephen United Methodist Church, where he served as district coordinator for the lay speaking ministry. He married Jeannie Moon in 1978 at Hereford. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Shamarie Morris and Paula Bolton, both of Dalhart; a brother, W.A. "Bill" Tucker of Renton, Wash.; and seven grandchildren. W.M. Green W.M. "Cotton" Green, 76, of Amarillo, died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998. At age 18, he enlisted in the Navy, serving aboard the USS Artic, which was stationed off the coast when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941. He served in the Navy for eight years and in the Naval Reserves for two years, working as Chief Machinist's Mate and later promoted to Chief Petty Officer. In 1948 he moved to Amarillo, where he worked as a maintenance mechanic for Southwestern Public Service Co. for 39 years before retirement. He also coached Little League baseball. He was a member of Paramount Baptist Church and of the Adult Two Co-ed Sunday School Class. He married Lois Davidson in 1946 at Amarillo. Survivors include his wife; a son, William David Green of Amarillo; a sister, Minnie Lee Richardson of Oklahoma City; a brother, Herbert Green of Lovington, N.M.; two grandchildren; and six stepgrandchildren. Saul Joseph Shapiro Saul Joseph Shapiro, 72, of Amarillo, died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Llano Cemetery with Dr. Steve Gans officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mr. Shapiro was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. A World War II Navy veteran, he served aboard the destroyer escort USS Ira Jeffery. In 1947 he moved to Philadelphia, where he began an apprenticeship in pharmacy before entering Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science. In 1956 Mr. Shapiro moved to Amarillo, where he was employed as a pharmacist by Skaggs Drugstore until 1972. Beginning in 1972, he managed Family Pharmacy for 24 years, until it closed in 1996. In semi-retirement, he worked for Dick Storseth's Village Pharmacy until earlier this year. Mr. Shapiro was a member of Temple B'Nai Israel and of the B'Nai Brith Brotherhood. He also was a member of the alumni association of Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and of the Ira Jeffery Reunion Committee. He married Rhoda Stein in 1947 at Philadelphia. Survivors include his wife; a son, Alan Shapiro of Amarillo; a daughter, Susan Rancer of Piedmont, Calif.; a brother, Ted Shapiro; a sister, Sylvia Markman of Amarillo; and three grandchildren. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church and a member of the 45 Upper Club. She married Ray Hefner in 1931. Area Rubye Inez Culpepper PAMPA - Rubye Inez Culpepper, 87, died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Pampa. Mr. Lockhart was born in Houston County, Tenn., and graduated from Erin High School where he played basketball. In 1942, he entered the Navy and served in the South Pacific. He moved to Pampa from Moline, Kan., in 1954. Mr. Lockhart was employed by Wagner and Wyant Drilling Co., then worked for Leonard Hudson Drilling Co., for 30 years. He retired in 1988. He was a Methodist and a member of Hope Masonic Lodge No. 155 AF&AM in Howard, Kan. Burial will be in Floyd County Memorial Park by Moore-Rose-White Funeral Home of Floydada. Mr. Watts was born in Saint Jo and attended school in Union Hill before graduating from Happy in 1937. He attended West Texas State University as a pre-med major until his National Guard unit was mobilized for war in 1940. Mr. Watts was assigned to the Army Air Corps and received his pilot's wings in 1942. He then moved to Georgia to train in an A-36 dive bomber. Following his training, he was assigned first to North Africa, then to Italy as a member of the 525th Fighter Bomber Squadron, 86th Fighter Group. Achieving the rank of captain, Mr. Watts was honored in his squadron's recently published history as one who "brought back aircraft so badly damaged that one could only stare in disbelief that such a wreck could fly." He completed 80 missions and was awarded the Purple Heart, the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with several Oak Leaf Clusters. From 1944 until 1946, he was a P-51 Mustang instructor. After his discharge, Mr. Watts returned to WTSU until he began farming in Lockney and Floydada in 1947. He owned and operated Barwise Ginn from 1956 until 1975 and was one of the organizers of the Independent Ginners Association. Mr. Watts served on the board of directors for both the Floyd County Fat Stock Show and the Floydada Country Club. He attended the First Methodist Church. He married Meda Ruth Thomas in 1942. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Dr. Thomas E. Watts of The Woodlands, Samuel M. Watts of Odessa, Dr. Danny D. Watts of Austin and Ricky D. Watts of Baton Rouge, La.; a daughter, Janet Watts Courtroul of Midland; a brother, James D. Watts of Madiera Beach, Fla.; a sister, Connie Watts Wilson of Dallas; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Frankie Mae Angton SHAMROCK - Frankie Mae Angton, 38, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998. Graveside services were at 10 a.m. Saturday in Bowers Cemetery in Shamrock. Arrangements were by Wright Funeral Directors. Mrs. Angton was born in Shamrock and was a lifelong resident. Survivors include her son, Willie Angton of Erick, Okla.; her father, Franklin D. Mary Nell Chadwick CLARENDON - Mary Nell Chadwick, 52, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, in Memphis. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Mrs. Chadwick was born in Groom and was a Clarendon resident for 22 years before moving to Wellington seven years ago. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. She married Charles Lee "Doc" Chadwick Sr., in 1968 at Memphis. He preceded her in death in 1990. Survivors include a daughter, Helen Fowler of Wellington; three sons, Charles Lee Chadwick of Wellington, Billy Gene Chadwick of Clarendon and Tommy Gene Chadwick of Edgewood, N.M.; three sisters, Flora Downey of Lubbock, Reba Swinney of Matador and Jessie Shin of Amarillo; a brother, Gary Parker of Lubbock; and nine grandchildren. Raymond Guyton McLEAN - Raymond Guyton, 83, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998. Mr. Guyton was born in Plainview. He worked in the oil fields from 1937 until 1950 when he moved to McLean. With his wife, he owned and operated Guyton Motor Company from 1950 until the present. He married Lorene Tennison in 1934 at Shamrock. Survivors include his wife; a son, Jerry Ray Guyton of Duncan, Okla.; two granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren. Blanche Boyle FRIONA - Blanche Boyle, 89, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998. Services were at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Friona United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Boren, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Friona Memorial Park by EllisBlackwell Funeral Home of Friona. Mrs. Boyle was born in Dixie, Okla. She graduated from Weatherford Teacher College and taught school for several years. She was a member of Friona United Methodist Church where she was a member of United Methodist Women and active in Sunday school. She married James Howard Boyle in 1931 at Granite, Okla. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1976, an infant son at birth and by a daughter, Julia Warren, in 1994. Survivors include a sister, Ila Hudgins of Lubbock; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three great-greatgrandchildren. Israel Reyes SHAMROCK - Israel Reyes, 59, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998. Private family services were at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Shamrock Cemetery. Arrangements were by Wright Funeral Directors. Mr. Reyes was born in Mission and had lived in Shamrock since 1984. He married Maria Espericueta in 1960 at McAllen. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Israel Reyes and Ismael Reyes, both of Shamrock; a daughter, Irene Reyes of Shamrock; two brothers, Nieves Reyes of McAllen and Leo Reyes of Shamrock; a sister, Ismelda Reyes of Plainview; and a grandchild. Wanda Baker LOCKNEY - Wanda Baker, 89, died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church of Lockney with the Rev. Russell Byard, pastor, and Rev. Keith Wiseman, associate pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Lubbock, officiating. Burial will be in Lockney Cemetery by Moore-Rose-White Funeral Home. Mrs. Baker was born in Grayson County and moved to Lakeview in 1914, then to Lockney in 1915 where she attended school. In 1928, she earned her teaching certificate from West Texas State College then obtained a degree from Draughon's Business College in 1930. Mrs. Baker was employed at the First National Bank of Lockney from 1930 until 1945. She also was employed by the Baker Mercantile Co., Barker Chevrolet as a bookkeeper and Lockney General Hospital as a manager. She was a bookkeeper for the family businesses and prepared income tax returns for Floyd County residents from 1935 until the early 1990s. In 1920, Mrs. Baker became a member of the First United Methodist Church where she served as church financial auditor, member of the board of trustees and the church board. She held several offices in the United Methodist Women's group and was a member of the church's Fellowship Hall Building committee. Mrs. Baker was a charter member of the Lockney Business and Professional Women's Club and the Birthday Bridge Club. She became a Silver Life Master with the American Contract Bridge League in 1995. She was named Floyd County Pioneer Woman of the Year in 1977. She married Dorsey Baker in 1933 at Fort Sumner, N.M. He preceded her in death in February. Survivors include two sons, Norton Baker and Dorsey Lynn Baker, both of Lubbock; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The family will greet friends from 1 p.m. until service time at the Fellowship Hall of the First United Methodist Church. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bryan Knowles, pastor of Martin Baptist Church, and the Rev. Derwin Comer officiating. Burial will be in Citizens Cemetery by Robertson Funeral Directors, Inc. Mrs. Hill was born in Mira. In 1946 she moved from Hall County to Donley County. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Martin Baptist Church and of the Martin Quilting Club. She married Olen Theadore Hill in 1920 at Gainesville. He died in 1985. Survivors include a daughter, Juanita Marie Fancher of Amarillo; four sons, Nolen Hill, Ralph Hill, Orin Lee Hill and Ross Hill, all of Clarendon; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
