Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, Bell Avenue Chapel, 5400 Bell St., with the Rev. David Bagwell and Dr. Jeff Bearden officiating. Entombment will be in Llano Cemetery. Rev. Riggs was born in Alabama. Prior to moving to Amarillo in 1957, he was minister at churches in Oklahoma and California. In Amarillo, he was minister for the River Road and Immanuel Baptist churches. He was a member of San Jacinto Baptist Church. He married Margaret Riggs in 1983 at Iowa. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jewel, in 1982 and by a daughter, Violet Parks, in 1987. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Geneva Bagwell of Amarillo, Janice Hall of De Soto and Deneise Klause of Blanchard, Okla.; two sisters, Dorothy Hobbs of California and Tommie Fox of Decatur; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-greatgrandchildren. The family will be at 6412 Euston. They suggest memorials be the San Jacinto Baptist Church. Jan Rury Gamble Jan Rury Gamble, 73, of Amarillo, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998. Virginia St. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 Bell St. Mrs. Gamble was born in Friona. In 1987 she moved from Big Spring to Amarillo. She was a homemaker and was employed as a seamstress. She was a member of the Church of Christ. She married Frank Gamble in 1949 at Roswell, N.M. He died in 1968. Survivors include a daughter, Toni J. Emmons of Amarillo; three brothers, Orland Rury Sr. of Austin, James W. Rury of San Diego, Calif., and Donald L. Mr. Peyton was born in Pueblo, Colo. In 1942 he moved from Chicago to Amarillo. He was employed as a clerk by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad, retiring in 1987. He was a Catholic. Mr. Peyton was a co-founder and member of the Amarillo Astronomy Club. He taught astronomy and typing at Amarillo College. He was an amateur meteorologist, a model railroad car collector, and a member of Amarillo Astronomers. He married Theresa King in 1985 at Clayton, N.M. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Kenneth Daniel "Dan" Peyton and Thomas James "Tom" Peyton, both of Amarillo; a stepson, Billie Dean Hulsey of El Cajon, Calif.; a daughter, Deborah "Debby" Maureen Tillman of Amarillo; two stepdaughters, Linda Heisler of Wayside and Jeanene Traylor of Phoenix; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Fountain was an ordained minister with the Universal Spirit of Truth Ministries Church and a member of Dixon Community Church, Dixon, Calif. She married Boyd Fountain in 1991 at Dixon. Rowland in 1930 at Oklahoma City. He died in 1971. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Jackie Rowland, in 1980. New Mexico Doyle Black PORTALES, N.M. - Doyle Black, 68, died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998. Memorial services will be at 2:30 p.m. today in Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales with Sonny Jones officiating. Mr. Black was born in Amherst, Texas. He grew up in Spade, Texas, where he graduated from high school. In 1957 he moved to the Bethel community west of Portales. He moved to Portales in 1972. He was involved in various agricultural ventures, most recently working in irrigation. Mr. Black was active in various churches and area Bible studies and prayer fellowships. He was a member of Gideons International and The Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship. For several years he was active in prison ministry. He married Thetagene Ross in 1956 at Spade. She died in 1992. Survivors include two daughters, Schelia Vruble of Olton and Kyla Black of Temecula, Calif.; a brother, Sedell Black of Littlefield; and three grandchildren. James Lee Anderson Blevins PORTALES, N.M. - James Lee Anderson "Jim" Blevins, 57, died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998. Mr. Blevins was born in Hagerman. He moved to Portales from Wenatchee, Wash., in 1991. He was a member of Southside Church of Christ and of the Masonic Lodge in Washington. Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church of Littlefield with the Rev. Charles Broadhurst of Amarillo officiating. Burial was in Littlefield Memorial Park by Hammons Funeral Home. Mr. Carmickle was born in Petersburg. He farmed in Bailey and Swisher Counties and worked for White's Automotive and Appliance Store in Amarillo. In 1951, he moved to Littlefield where he owned and operated the White's Automotive and Appliance store. In 1958, Mr. Carmickle became a real estate broker and helped to develop the Westwood and Crescent Park additions in Littlefield. He was active in acquiring the American Cotton Growers Denim Mill for the city. He was a member of the board of directors of SPAG and served on the Littlefield City Council for 12 years. He was mayor pro-tem for two terms. Mr. Carmickle served on the board of directors for Cal Farley's Boys Ranch and Littlefield Board of City Development for several years. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Littlefield Masonic Lodge No. 1161, Shriners and Littlefield Noon Lions Club. In 1977, he was named Littlefield Man of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce. He married Wilmith Day in 1939 at Plainview. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Paula Schroeder of Littlefield and Sandy Anderson Paul of Amarillo; two brothers, Lon Carmickle of Abernathy and Wayne Carmickle of Texarkana; three sisters, Beth Gaizauskas of Canyon Lake, Juanita Dent of Hale Center and Zelda Payne of Lubbock; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He received a degree in dental technology from TSTI. He was a professional musician for many years and was the owner / operator of Acculab of Lago Vista. "Buck" Fallwell, 82, of Hot Springs, Ark., and formerly of Hereford, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998. He was a retired farmer, cattleman and horse trainer. He was a World War II veteran. Nathalie Morgan SPEARMAN - Nathalie Morgan, 75, died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998. Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Saturday in Highland Park Cemetery with the Rev. Mrs. Morgan was a native of Sulphur Springs and had been a Borger resident for 55 years. She moved to Spearman in 1983. Her first marriage was in 1939 to James Cole Younger who died in 1959. Her second marriage was to John Morgan in 1970. He died in 1993. She grew up in Olton, Hereford and Halfway and attended Plainview schools. In 1975, she moved to Chicago and returned to Plainview in 1991. She was employed as a registered nurse in labor and delivery at St. Mary's Hospital. From 1992 until 1996, she was a nurses' manager for Methodist Hospital in Plainview. She married David Ferguson in 1969 at Plainview. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Tammie Cook of Plainview; two sons, Michael Ferguson of Tucker, Ark., and Robert Ferguson of Plainview; a sister, Bobbie Young of Plainview; and five grandchildren. For 32 years, she was dispatcher and jailer for the Bailey County Sheriff's Office. She was a member of a United Pentecostal Church. She married Forist Williams in 1944 at Muleshoe. He died in 1996. Survivors include a daughter, Judy Milburn of Fredricksburg; two sisters, Ora Howes of Odessa and Geneva Smith of Lubbock; three brothers, Bud Cook of Clovis, Bill Cook of Kilgore and Joe Cook of Paducah; and a granddaughter. Maria Garcia Escamilla HEREFORD - Maria Garcia Escamilla, 45, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998. Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. today in Brooks Funeral Directors Chapel in Canyon. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Ann's Catholic Church in Canyon by the Rev. Domingo, pastor of San Jose Catholic Church of Hereford. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery. Mrs. Escamilla was born in Crystal City. She graduated from high school in Michigan and moved to Hereford in 1972. She was a member of San Jose Catholic Church, president and historian of the Pioneer Study Club and member of the Day Lily Club. She was the first Hispanic woman to become a member of the General Federation of Women, Top of Texas District. Mrs. Escamilla was an active volunteer for the community of Hereford where she maintained a garden center for the city. She received several awards for her cross stitching, including the Judge's Choice and first place. She married Juan Escamilla in 1975 at Clovis, N.M. She is survived by her husband and a brother, Jose Torres of Detroit. Alfred Combs DALHART - Alfred Combs, 79, died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Hass Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Davis, pastor of Peoples Church in Dalhart, officiating. Mr. Combs was born in Elkhart, Kan., and raised in Griggs, Okla. In the early 1940s he moved to the Dalhart area, where he owned and operated Combs Trucking for many years. He was preceded in death by a son, Freddie Combs. Survivors include four sons, Donald Ray Combs, James A. Combs, Billy D. Mr. Whitfill was born in Lockney. A lifelong resident of Floyd County, he had worked at Whitfill Wood Shop doing custom work. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include two brothers, James Whitfill of Plainview and Glenn Whitfill of Sweetwater; and a sister, Martha Jennings of Tulia. Nadine Gooch PLAINVIEW - Nadine Gooch, 84, died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Lemons Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Mike Thibodeaux of Fort Worth officiating. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Gooch was born in Cooke County, where she attended school. She was a homemaker. In 1944 she moved to Bovina and Parmer County. In 1946 she moved to Dimmitt and in 1979 to Plainview. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Burns City. She married Ester Elwin Gooch in 1921 in Cooke County. He died in 1978. Survivors include two sons, J.W. Gooch of Lubbock and Blake Gooch of Plainview; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Maxine Mildred Brown HEREFORD - Maxine Mildred Brown, 70, a resident of Deaf Smith County, died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry Cosby, pastor, and Denzil Pulliam, an elder of Central Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in West Park Cemetery by Gililland-Watson Funeral Home. Mrs. Brown was born in Bellview, N.M., where she graduated from high school. In 1947 she moved to Deaf Smith County. She was a homemaker and had been employed as a school bus driver. Mrs. Brown was a member of Hereford Senior Citizens, Rosedale, N.M., Senior Citizens, Big Sam's Club and First Baptist Church in Rosedale. She married Eldred Brown in 1947 at Bellview. Survivors include her husband; a son, Tommy Brown of Friona; three sisters, Billie Brown of Hereford, Wilma Shadix of Broadview, N.M., and Genevia Coleman of Richland, Wash.; and two grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to a favorite charity. Venita Browning Day PLAINVIEW - Venita Browning Day, 88, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church Family Life Chapel with Dr. Travis Hart, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park by Lemons Funeral Home. Mrs. Day was born in Melrose, N.M. She graduated from Clovis High School. She was a homemaker. In 1949 she moved from Snyder to Plainview. Mrs. Day was a charter member and past president of Plainview Women's Club. She was also a past president of the Athenaeum Club, Chapter BL of PEO and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she had been a Sunday School teacher and department leader. She married Hollis W. Browning in 1927. He died in 1967. In 1972 she married Frank R. Day. He died in 1981. Survivors include two sons, Tommy N. Browning and Jeane L. Browning, both of Plainview; two stepdaughters, Mary Frank Owen of Plainview and Effie Jean Bay of Houston; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Willie Torres Jr. MEMPHIS - Willie Torres Jr., 42, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church by the Rev. Jose Gomez. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery by Memphis Funeral Home. Mr. Torres was born at Robstown. He was a truck driver. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Survivors include his former wife, Yolanda Maldonado, of Claude; two sons, Wesley Adam Torres of Amarillo and Willie Rey Torres of Memphis; a daughter, Nikki Torres of Claude; his mother, Manuela Torres of Memphis; seven sisters, Maria Benevides of Robstown, Margarita Marines, Lydia Aleman and Janie Casas, all of Memphis, Esperanza Flores of Dayton, Ore., Maria Hacker of Waco and Rosalinda Hilla of Marina, Mich.; and by three brothers, Catarino Torres, Isidoro Torres and Joe Torres, all of Memphis. J.V. Emmert WELLINGTON - J.V. "Shorty" Emmert, 83, died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in The Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Jim Ikner, pastor, and the Rev. Thurman Emmert, retired Nazarene minister, officiating. Burial will be in South Fairview Cemetery by Adams Funeral Home. Mr. Emmert was born in the Crossroads community of Collingsworth County, where he attended school. A farmer for more than 50 years, he was a lifetime resident of the county. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and also attended The Church of the Nazarene. He married Mary Lou Harris in 1947 at Wellington. His second marriage, in 1975, was to Mabel Hall Forbis, at Hollis, Okla. She died in 1982. Survivors include three daughters, Wanda Mayes and Cindy Higdon, both of Amarillo, and Rhonda Chambers of Kentucky; a son, Mark Emmert of Shamrock; three brothers, Thurman Emmert and Tommy Emmert, both of Wellington, and John Emmert of Long Beach, Calif.; three sisters, Corene Childress, Virginia Kimbro and Nancy Harris, all of Wellington; his stepmother, Velma Emmert of Wellington; a stepbrother, Jack Aaron of Burkburnett; two stepsisters, Sue Meyers of Hugoton, Kan., and Joy Aaron Emmert of Wellington; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to The Church of the Nazarene or to the Wellington Cemetery Association.
