Kirk Annie B. Kirk, 91, a former Amarillo resident, died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998, at Fort Worth. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, Bell Avenue Chapel, 5400 Bell St., with Lynn Camp of Southwest Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mrs. Kirk was born in Van Alstyne and moved to Amarillo in 1981 from Lark. She was a homemaker and member of the Groom Thimblett Needle Club. She also was a member of the Church of Christ in Groom, Southwest Church of Christ in Amarillo and Lakewood Village Church of Christ in Fort Worth. She married Lee Kirk in 1929 at Claude. He preceded her in death in 1982. Survivors include a son, Ivan W. "Buddy" Kirk of College Station; two daughters, Barbara Kirk Standly of Arlington and Martha Kirk Babcock of San Antonio; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to High Plains Children's Home of Amarillo. Carl Offield Carl Offield, 63, of Amarillo, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Schooler Funeral Home, Brentwood Chapel, 4100 S. Georgia St., with the Rev. Jeff Messer and Greg Kinch, pastor of South Lawn Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mr. Offield was born in Afton. He graduated from Afton High School and attended Texas Tech University. He received numerous awards in football and calf roping. He had worked as a salesman and a broker. He spent 42 years in heavy equipment sales and was awarded Outstanding Salesman of the Nation for Case Power and Equipment. He married Hazel Brown in 1964 in Wichita Falls. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Jan Offield Beard of Amarillo and Terry DeThample and Carla Burns, both of Fort Worth; a son, Richard Offield of Fort Worth; four sisters, Joyce Huckabay of Lubbock, Rosalea Littlefield of Kerrville, Jimmie Hamm of Denton and Cassie Hodge of San Marcos; a brother, Bill Offield of McLean; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Maxine Ruggels Garst Maxine Ruggels Garst, 87, of Amarillo, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998. Osage St. Mrs. Garst was born in Minneapolis, Kan. She moved to Amarillo 54 years ago from Russell, Kan. She was a homemaker and bookkeeper for the family business. She was a charter member of Parkview Christian Church. She married Roy D. Garst in 1930 at Hayes, Kan. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1971, a son, Richard Garst in 1972, and a daughter, Phyllis Gwynn in August. Survivors include a daughter, Karen Parish of Amarillo; a son, Gerold Garst of Dumas; two sisters, Marguerite Cofield of Amarillo and Virginia Trechter of Manhattan, Kan.; 13 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. He married Stella Wooten in 1949 at Michigan. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Carol Sue Pitts of Amarillo; two sons, Jerry Zeis and Harold Zeis, both of Amarillo; and three grandchildren. The family will be at 1724 N.E. 16th. Lois E. Capp Lois E. Capp, 90, of Amarillo, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998. Services will be at noon Friday in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors, Martin Road Chapel, 1505 Martin Road, with the Rick Rice, Bykota Baptist Church, officiating. Entombment will be in Memorial Park East Mausoleum. Mrs. Capp was born in Cisco and moved to Amarillo 85 years ago from Hedley. She was the former owner of Mary Thomas Restaurant in the 1950s. She worked for the Holiday Inn for 21 years. When she was 70, she retired from the Amarillo Independent School District after 13 years. She was a Methodist. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Hurst and Charline Appling, both of Colorado City; a son, Bob Smith of Lufkin; a sister, Tressie Rutledge of Amarillo; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren The family will be at 1608 N. Nelson. Dorothy Lowndes Rogers Dorothy Lowndes Rogers, 97, of Amarillo, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, in San Antonio. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Llano Cemetery with the Right Rev. George H. Quarterman, retired bishop of the Episcopal diocese of Northwest Texas Hospital, officiating. Arrangements are by Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors, Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce St. Mrs. Rogers was born in Amarillo and graduated from Amarillo High School in 1919. For 28 years, she worked for the Amarillo Girl Scout Council and also worked for the Community Chest. She was a charter member of Junior Woman's Club, a member of the Woman's Club, the JUG Club and Senior Citizens Association. She was a lifelong member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. She was in many church organizations including Daughters of the King, St. Lydia's Guild and Women's of St. Andrews. She worked in the Saints Corner Parish Gift Shop. She married John Edward "Jack" Rogers in 1920 at Amarillo. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1976 and by a son, Lt. Col. Alexander L. Rogers, in 1993. Survivors include a daughter, Lynda R. Rogers of Amarillo; a son, John E. Rogers; a brother, Charley Lowndes of Amarillo; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. The family will be at 1515 S. Rusk. Gary Smith, M.D. Gary Smith, M.D., 44, formerly of Amarillo, died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998 in Las Vegas. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors, Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street, with the Rev. Murray Gosset of First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Dr. Smith graduated from Tascosa High School in 1972 and then attended Amarillo College and Texas Tech University. In 1986, he received his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio. He completed his residency in anesthesia at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso in 1994. Dr. Smith practiced with Anesthesia Consultants, Inc., in Las Vegas. He was a diplomat of the American Academy of Pain Management, a member of the American Medical Association and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. He also held a private pilot's certificate. Survivors include his mother, Barbara Marie Smith of Amarillo; his brother, Kenny Smith of Amarillo; and a special friend, Cynthia St. Clair of Las Vegas. The family will be at 1921 Alice. They suggests memorials be to the Boy Scouts of America or a favorite charity. Canyon Elsie L. Lewis Elsie L. Lewis, 62, of Canyon, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Llano Cemetery in Amarillo with Bruce Tate, bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of Canyon, officiating. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors of Canyon. Miss Lewis was born in Missouri and was a longtime resident of Canyon. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The body will not be available for viewing. Elsewhere Eunice Reeves AUSTIN - Eunice Reeves, 92, a former Amarillo resident, died Friday, Oct. 23, 1998. Memorial services were Sunday in Bethany United Methodist Church in Austin. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Childress City Cemetery. Arrangements are by Cook Walden Chapel of the Hills, 9700 Anderson Mill Road, Austin, TX 78750. Mrs. Reeves was born in Paris, Texas. She married Homer Reeves in 1927 in Childress. They moved to Amarillo in 1946 and remained there until his death in 1986. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Amarillo. She moved to Austin in 1993. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Harper of Austin; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Area Leona Glenn HEREFORD - Leona Glenn, 89, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998. Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Rose Chapel of Gililland-Watson Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Bulin, pastor of Avenue Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Park. Mrs. Glenn was born in New Mexico Territory. She moved to Deaf Smith County in 1957 from Muleshoe and was a member of Avenue Baptist Church. She received her associate's degree in home economics from West Texas State College and was employed by the state Department of Public Welfare. She married Randolph P. Glenn in 1949 at Wheeler. He died in 1977. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Mason of Hereford; a brother, B.F. Crossland Jr. of Amarillo; two grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Kings Manor Retirement Home. Robert Kendall Wood STINNETT - Robert "Bob" Kendall Wood, 71, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 1998. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Memorial Chapel of Brown Funeral Directors of Borger with the Rev. Billy Lewis and the Rev. Roger Harwerth officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Stinnett. Mr. Wood was a native of La Junta, Colo., and had been a Stinnett resident for 25 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. From 1948 until his retirement in 1985, he was a senior terminal clerk for Phillips Pipeline. He married Barbara Bodey in 1974 at Stinnett. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert "Bob" K. Wood Jr., in 1970. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Gerald Allen Wood of Lakewood, Colo., Chris Eugene Wood of Denver and John Michael Wood of Newport Beach, Calif.; two stepsons, Eugene Bodey and Robert D. Bodey, both of Borger; two brothers, Don Wood of Kirkland, Wash., and Larry Wood of Beaverton, Ore.; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The family suggests memorials be to Hospice of the Panhandle, 30 S. McGee St., Borger, TX 79007. Ona Fay Ownbey Watkins GRUVER - Ona Fay Ownbey Watkins, 86, died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in Gruver United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gordon Schroeder and the Rev. Jerry Moore officiating. Burial will be in Gruver Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman. Mrs. Watkins was born in Hutchinson County where she was a longtime resident. She graduated from Spearman High School in 1928 and attended Draughon's Business College. She was employed in the ASCS office in Stinnett. A member of Gruver United Methodist Church, Mrs. Watkins taught the Adult Sunday School Class. She gave many book reviews and was a homemaker. She married Claude Watkins in 1934 at Hutchinson County. He died in 1973. Survivors include a sister, Beulah Bort of Gruver; and four nieces. The family suggests memorials be to Hansford Manor, Hansford Hospice, Gruver United Methodist Church or a favorite charity. Maxie M. Stayton SPEARMAN - Maxie M. Stayton, 86, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998. Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. today in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Amarillo with the Rev. Hal Carpenter officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home. Mrs. Stayton was born in Erick, Okla., where she graduated from high school in 1932. She moved to Spearman 12 years ago from Amarillo. She had worked in retail sales and as a secretary in Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio and Houston. From 1975 until 1985, Mrs. Stayton lived in Amarillo where she worked at Colbert's. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She entered Hansford Manor in 1985 where she resided until her death. She was preceded in death by her husband, Felix Friedman, in 1963. She is survived by several cousins. New Mexico Dr. Warren Wright Schumpert PORTALES, N.M. - Dr. Warren Wright Schumpert, 52, died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998, at Fort Hood, Texas. Service will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Crawford Bowers Funeral Home Chapel at Killeen, Texas. Additional services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in First Baptist Church in Portales with Dr. Philip Fike officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Portales Cemetery. Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales Inc. Dr. Schumpert was born in Portales. He received a bachelor's degree in music from Hardin-Simmons University at Abilene, Texas. He participated in ROTC while at Hardin-Simmons and was a member of the Pershing Rifles Drill Team. He was a musician and composer. He played trumpet in the Hardin-Simmons University Cowboy Band. He served as choir director in numerous churches in Houston and Killeen. Dr. Schumpert studied dentistry and was a 1983 graduate of Baylor Dental School. He practiced in Houston, Portales and Killeen until his retirement. He was an Army veteran, retiring as a major. He married Julia Hall in 1993. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Christa E. Schumpert of Clovis; several stepchildren; his mother, Eunice Schumpert of Portales; two brothers, Burnie J. Schumpert of Temple, Texas, and Thomas L. Schumpert of Nashville, Tenn. The family requests memorials be to the First Baptist Church or to Hope for the Hungry in Belton, Texas. J.W. Eshleman PLEASANT HILL, N.M. - J.W. Eshleman, 70, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in the Chapel of Steed-Todd Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis. Mr. Eshleman was born in Clovis. He was a veteran of the Korean War and farmed in Pleasant Hill for most of his life. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Clovis. Survivors include his wife, Florine; two daughters, Becky Hamilton of Amarillo and Georgia Tharp of Clovis; his mother, Hazel Eshleman of Pleasant Hill; a brother, Jack Eshleman of Clovis; a sister, Wanda Kelley of Pleasant Hill; and two grandchildren. Betty Jean Felts CLOVIS, N.M. - Betty Jean Felts, 67, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 1998. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in First Church of the Nazarene with Ed Abla, pastor, and Jared Reynolds, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens by Steed-Todd Funeral Home. Mrs. Felts was born in San Benito, Texas. She was active in both First Church of God and First Church of the Nazarene. She enjoyed singing in the choir. She moved to Clovis four years ago from Albuquerque. Survivors include four daughters, Shirley Rivera of North Ridge, Calif., Pamela Doerksen of Santana, Kan., Debbie Tate of Clovis and Jerry Tyler of Pekin, Ind.; her mother, Iva Glass of Rio Rancho; two sisters, Frances Mowdy of Conroe, Texas, and Sue Logsdon of Rio Rancho; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and her former husband, F.E. "Gene" Felts of Albuquerque. The family will be at No. 30 Paseo Village in Clovis. Doyle Eugene Kear Sr. CLAYTON, N.M. - Doyle Eugene Kear Sr., 63, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Rammage, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Granview Cemetery north of Clayton by Hass Funeral Directors of Clayton. Mr. Kear was born in Pennington. He lived in Clayton until he was 16. He operated a service station on the air base in Amarillo for several years. He returned to Clayton in 1960 where he ranched for 38 years. He also operated Kear Exxon Station from 1981 until 1993. He married Ruby Jean Campbell in 1958 at Clayton. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Eugene Kear and Russell Kear, both of Clayton; a daughter, Rachel Kear of Albuquerque; his mother, Marie Kear of Oklahoma City; two brothers, Roland Kear and Rex Kear, both of Oklahoma City; four sisters, Wanda Hamilton and Nita Niece, both of Clovis, and Pat Owen and Juanel Dubiel, both of Oklahoma City; and seven grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to First Baptist Church Building Fund, Clayton, NM 88415. Oklahoma Elsie Marie Snapp BOISE CITY, Okla. - Elsie Marie Snapp, 84, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Boise City Cemetery with David Peterson officiating. Arrangements are by Cimarron Mortuary. Mrs. Snapp was born and raised in Enid. After graduation from Enid High School, she attended cosmetology school. She was a member of the Christian Church in Enid. She lived in Woodward before moving to Boise City. She worked with her husband in their well service business and was a practical nurse at Cimarron Memorial Hospital. She was later a medication nurse in a nursing home. She married Bob Snapp in 1940 at Enid. He preceded her in death. Survivors include a daughter, Pat Campbell of Seneca, N.M.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. The family suggests memorials be to Boise City Cemetery fund, which may be left in care of the mortuary.
