Criss CLAUDE - Susie F. Criss, 84, died Thursday, July 1, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Gerald Aalbers officiating. Burial will be in Claude Cemetery by Minton / Chatwell Funeral Directors of Panhandle. Mrs. Criss was born in Winston County, Ala., and moved to Armstrong County in 1955. For 28 years, she was employed by Palo Duro Nursing Home in Claude. She married Everett Roscoe Criss in 1930 at Tennessee. He died in 1965. Survivors include two sons, Everett Earl Criss of Montana and William Virgil Criss of Italy, Texas; four daughters, Rose Frances Hyde of Florence, Ala., Virginia Louise Woods of Canyon and Shirley Ann Milner and Jewel Dean Bednorz, both of Panhandle; a sister, Resie Boehening of Amarillo; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. Mary Moates CHILDRESS - Mary Moates, 95, died Thursday, July 1, 1999. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Carey Baptist Church with Anthony Turnbow officiating. Burial will be in the Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home. Mrs. Moates was born in Groesbeck. She was a homemaker and played the piano. She married William Henry Moates in 1922 in the Garden Valley area. He died in 1972. She also was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy, in 1991 and by a daughter, Billie Lou White. Survivors include a son, Don Moates of West Texas; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Moates-Mills of Childress; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Ethel Hooper PLAINVIEW - Ethel Hooper, 93, of Halfway, died Wednesday, June 30, 1999. Services will be at 4 p.m. today in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Plainview. Burial will be in Halfway Cemetery by Lemons Funeral Home of Plainview. Mrs. Hooper was born in Colfax, Iowa, and moved to Halfway when she was 2 years old. She attended schools in Westside, Halfway and Plainview and then attended Lippert's Business College in Plainview. In 1920, she began her 27-year career in farming. Mrs. Hooper was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School for 18 years. In 1994, she was named Pioneer Woman of the Plains. She married William "Bill" Hooper in 1923 at Plainview. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1937 and by a son, Carl Hopper, in 1978. Survivors include a son, Henry Hooper of Halfway; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Lutheran Hour Ministries or Vista Care Hospice in Plainview. Edward Henry Brainard II CANADIAN - Edward Henry "Ed" Brainard II, 72, died Thursday, July 1, 1999. Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday in First Presbyterian Church of Canadian with the Rev. Brad Walker and the Rev. Robin Gantz officiating. Burial will be in Edith Ford Cemetery by Stickley-Hill Funeral Directors of Canadian. Mr. Brainard was born to a Texas Panhandle pioneer family in Canadian and was raised at John's Creek on the Canadian River. He attended Blodgett School, Crouch Creek School in Roberts County, New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, N.M., and graduated from Canadian High School. Mr. Brainard served in the Army at Fort Knox, Ky., Governor's Island, N.Y., and in occupied Germany from 1954 until 1956. After his discharge, he returned to the family ranches in the panhandle. He lived on the John's Creek ranch until moving to Pampa in 1973. Mr. Brainard was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Canadian, member and past-president of the Panhandle Livestock Association, member and director of Texas Hereford Association, on the animal health committee of Texas and member of Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and a member of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. He was active in various community and area projects and activities. He married Lilith Maizell Martin in 1958 at Pampa. Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Sally Wicker and Amy Brainard, both of Canadian, Berklee Clements of Skellytown and Sena Brainard of Pampa; a son, Swasey Brainard of Pampa; a sister, Mary Kay Christner of Wheeler; a cousin, Ben McIntyre of Spearman; and eight grandchildren. The family will be at 601 Kingman St. in Canadian. They suggest memorials be to Canadian Presbyterian Church Building Fund, Canadian River Valley Museum, Hemphill County Library, Panhandle Livestock Association Scholarship Fund, New Mexico Military Institute or a favorite charity. Laura Wimberly Guthrie WHEELER - Laura Wimberly Guthrie, 98, died Friday, July 2, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church in Wheeler with the Rev. Toby Henson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Wheeler Cemetery by Wright Funeral Home of Wheeler. Mrs. Guthrie was born in Lacasa, Stephens County. She graduated from Abernathy High School in 1918 and Wayland Baptist College in 1922. From 1922 until 1926, she taught in various schools. In 1926, Mrs. Guthrie attended the University of Texas. With her husband, she co-owned and operated the Chevrolet dealership and service station in Matador from 1926 until 1930 when they moved to Wheeler. In Wheeler, they operated the Rogue Theater and Mustang Drive Inn from 1930 until 1979 and owned the Wheeler Cable TV service until 1976. Mrs. Guthrie was twice honored as Woman of the Year. She was a charter member of the Wednesday Study Club, an active member of the Wheeler Chamber of Commerce, a member of First Baptist Church and a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was a member of the Senior Citizens where she started the quilting club, a member of the Garden Club, a bridge club member and was a volunteer at the Wheeler Care Center. She married Lee Guthrie in 1924 at Matador. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1958 and by a son, Marion Lee "Corky" Guthrie, in 1980. Survivors include five grandchildren, Melinda Whorton of Wheeler, Steve Guthrie of Smithville, Rose Aston of Borger, Joe Guthrie of Shamrock and Bobby Guthrie of Amarillo; a daughter-in-law, Lydia Guthrie of Amarillo; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Wheeler Public Library or Wheeler First Baptist Church. Amarillo Mary Margaret Rodgers Mary Margaret Rodgers, 89, of Amarillo, died Tuesday, June 29, 1999. Services were at 2 p.m. Friday in Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors Bell Avenue Chapel, 5400 Bell St., with Dr. James Garrett, of Polk Street United Methodist Church, officiating. Entombment will be at a later date in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mrs. Rodgers was born in Alfalfa County, Okla., and moved to Amarillo 86 years ago from Lubbock. She was a self-employed bookkeeper and attended Polk Street United Methodist Church. She married James Whit Rodgers in 1932 at Clayton, N.M. He died in 1992. Survivors include a sister, Viola Cassel of Grand Junction, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews. The family requests memorials be to the American Heart Association. Lucile Lennox Lucile Lennox, 89, of Amarillo, died Thursday, July 1, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Jenkins Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Roger Battle, pastor, and the Rev. Elgie Crow, pastor of Carter Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Warford-Walker Mortuary Inc., 509 N. Hughes St. Mrs. Lennox was born in Pauls Valley, Okla. She was raised and attended public school in Wynnewood, Okla., moving to Amarillo in 1929. She was a housewife and a member of Jenkins Chapel Baptist Church and Superior Chapter 214, Order of Eastern Star. She married Nolan Lennox in 1937 at Chickasha, Okla. She was preceded in death by a son, Nolan J. Lennox Jr., in 1964 and by her husband in 1980. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. The family will be at 1633 N.W. 16th Ave. Jonella Lynn Anderson Jonella Lynn Anderson, 32, died Thursday, July 1, 1999. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Everett Stevens of Highland Christian Church officiating. Arrangements are by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40. Mrs. Anderson was born in Troy, Ohio, and moved to Amarillo in 1982. She attended Caprock High School and was employed as a clerk in a convenience store. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Kristi Lynn Anderson, in 1998. Survivors include two daughters, Jessica Anderson and Stephanie Anderson, both of Amarillo; her parents, Mary Tucker of Troy and Max and Sharmon Craun of Amarillo; three brothers, Max Craun Jr. and Forrest Craun, both of Troy, and Ben Lucas of Amarillo; four sisters, Clara Campbell of Troy and Barb McGlauthlin, Holli Malena and Heather Ortiz, all of Amarillo; and her grandmother, Margaret Morris of Dayton, Ohio. The family suggests memorials be to the American Cancer Society. New Mexico Esther N. Bombarger CLOVIS, N.M. - Esther N. Bombarger, 88, died Thursday, July 1, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Parkland Baptist Church with the Rev. Doug Brooks officiating. Entombment will be in Plains Sanctuary Mausoleum Mission Garden of Memories by Steed-Todd Funeral Home. Mrs. Bombarger was born on a homestead between Clovis and Pleasant Hill before New Mexico was a state. She worked for many years as a case worker with disabled and crippled children. She was a member of Parkland Baptist Church and was a past worthy matron of the Keystone Chapter 27 Order of Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, Christopher Louis Bombarger. Survivors include a son, Coy Bombarger of Clovis; a daughter, Darlyne Bell of Amarillo; a sister, Maurine Winkles of Clovis; two brothers, Roy Lovett of Clovis and Troy Lovett of Pleasant Hill; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to Baptist Children's Home. Frankie Ella Roark CLOVIS, N.M. - Frankie Ella Roark, 85, died Monday, June 7, 1999, at Pensacola, Fla. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens at Clovis. Arrangements are by Steed-Todd Funeral Home. Mrs. Roark was born in Elk City, Okla. She graduated from Fort Sumner High School and business college in Oklahoma. She worked at the base at Fort Sumner during World War II and at the Clovis Army Air Base after the Fort Sumner base closed. Mrs. Roark and her husband farmed west of Clovis. She later worked for the Montgomery Ward catalog department in Clovis from 1952 until 1963 when she accepted the position of administrative officer for the National Park Service at Bandelier National Monument near Los Alamos. She transferred to Lake Meredith Recreational area at Fritch, Texas, in 1971. In 1977, Mrs. Roark retired at Fritch as the recreational area's chief administrative officer. She moved to Pensacola in 1994. She married Oscar William Roark in 1936 at Santa Rosa. She was preceded in death by her husband and an infant daughter, Mickey Ferne Roark. Survivors include a son, Oscar W. "Bill" Roark of Pensacola; and a grandson, Jessie W. Roark of Pensacola. Gilbert Joe Marez CLOVIS, N.M. - Gilbert Joe Marez, 65, died Thursday, July 1, 1999. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday in Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Community. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Community with the Rev. Daniel M. Balizan officiating. Burial will be in Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe by Muffley Funeral Home of Clovis. Mr. Marez was born in Muleshoe, Texas. He was a laborer and member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Community. Survivors include three sons, Tommy Marez and Robert Marez, both of Clovis, and Simley Marez of Lubbock; four daughters, Lillie Romero, Sylvia Lopez, Monica Marez and Christine Marez, all of Clovis; two brothers, Steve Marez of San Jose, Calif., and Jimmy Marez of Portland, Ore.; three sisters, Josie Arias of Clovis, Sally Rigler of Ohio and Carmen Duran of Denver; 25 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
