Matthews HEREFORD - Leona L. Matthews, 92, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Mike Sullivan, pastor of First Assembly of God, officiating. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park by Gililland-Watson Funeral Home. Mrs. Matthews was born in Jarbalo, Kan., and moved to Deaf Smith County in 1909 from Kansas. She had been a cafeteria worker for Hereford Independent School District and attended the Assembly of God Church. She married Ronald Franklin Matthews in 1928 at Hereford. He died in 1980. Survivors include a son, Mark Matthews of Hereford; a daughter, Marilyn Peters of Phoenix; a brother, Clarence Schultz of Arlington; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two greatgreat-grandchildren. Amarillo Daily News, Nov. 3, 1999 Eva Firestone DALHART - Eva Firestone, 90, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in the First Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Claude Hendricks, pastor, and the Rev. Rusty Hancock, pastor of Lincoln Street Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at Dalhart by Hass Funeral Home. Mrs. Firestone was born in Corn, Okla. She married Leland Firestone in 1929. In 1945, they built the Firestone Motel, which they sold in 1974. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1994. Survivors include a son, Leland Duane Firestone of Antonito, Colo.; three daughters, Vera Hancock, Bonnie Layman and Linda Greenstreet, all of Dalhart; a sister, Dorothy Scott of Howard, Kan.; 14 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Amarillo Daily News, Nov. 3, 1999 Jessie Marie Hall DALHART - Jessie Marie Hall, 89, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, in Bronte. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Central United Methodist Church in Dalhart with the Rev. Everett Statler and the Rev. Jimmye Cole officiating. Arrangements are by Winters Funeral Home of Winters. Mrs. Hall was born in Dalhart then moved to Sedan, N.M., in 1916. She returned to Dalhart to complete her high school education. She worked with her husband in the Federal Land Bank Association and in an insurance and real estate business. Later, Mrs. Hall worked in secretarial positions for Bishop Office Supply and Central United Methodist Church where she received the Distinguished Service Award. She was a volunteer Pink Lady at Coon Memorial Nursing Home in Dalhart. In 1931, she married Judge Lawrence D. Ashby. He died in 1964. Her second marriage was in 1978 to Frank S. Hall Jr. He died in 1994. Survivors include three children, Dr. Neil Ashby of Boulder, Colo., Jo Beth Shields of Winters and Dr. Janita Kay Byars of Pittsford, N.Y.; a brother, the Rev. D.T. Stayton of Lenexa, Kan.; a sister, Mary Nichols of Comanche; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 14 step-grandchildren; and 24 step-greatgrandchildren. Ruff, 85, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors Colonial Chapel with the Rev. W.C. Ratchford, a Church of God evangelist, and the Rev. Melvin Harris, pastor of Priest Park Church of God, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Mrs. Ruff was born in Sulphur Bluff and lived in Mobeetie from 1944 until 1956. She then moved to Pampa. From 1958 until 1980, she and her husband owned and operated Aubrey Ruff Grocery. Mrs. Ruff was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Mr. and Mrs. Garden Club. She married Aubrey Ruff in 1930 at Mobeetie. He died in 1987. Survivors include a daughter, Irvine Riphahn of Pampa; two sisters, Ruby Terry and Oleta Ruff, both of Pampa; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. Amarillo Daily News, Nov. 3, 1999 Colby Jay Goodwin DUMAS - Colby Jay Goodwin, 32, of Lovington, N.M., died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999 in Oklahoma City. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Channing School Gymnasium in Channing with the Rev. Ty Bean, pastor of Cowboy Junction in Lovington, and the Rev. Trey Johnson, pastor of Cowboy Church in Canyon, officiating. Burial will be in Channing Cemetery in Channing by Morrison Funeral Directors in Dumas. Mr. Goodwin was born in Pocatello, Idaho. In 1987, he graduated from Grand Junction, Colo., High School where he was active in basketball and rodeo activities. He attended Pratt Kansas College and West Texas State University. He received his associate's degree from Lamar Junior College. Prior to moving to Lovington a year ago, Mr. Goodwin had lived in Canyon for eight years. In 1991, he joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. He was a rodeo cowboy and was affiliated with the Cowboy Junction Church in Lovington. Going into the Steer Roping National Finals last weekend, he was ranked eighth in the Crown Royal World Standings. He married Amy Hill in 1998 at Canyon. Survivors include his wife; a son, Gunner James Goodwin of the home; and his parents, Joan Warren of Whitesboro and Myrl Goodwin of Canyon. The family will be at the home of Jim and Kathleen Hill in Channing. She moved to Terrell four years ago. She married Elra Clinton Oden Sr. in 1933 at Morton. He died in 1990. Curtis James E. Curtis, 76, of Amarillo, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999. Private services were held Tuesday. Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors, Memorial Chapel, 315 E. Fifth Ave. Mr. Curtis was a lifelong resident of Amarillo. During World War II, he served in the Army. For 20 years, he was a musician. He was self-employed as a painter. Survivors include two sons, James R. She received her licensed vocational nurse training in Groom through Clarendon College. She was a member of Southlawn Baptist Church and worked for Georgia Manor Nursing Home after her retirement. Mrs. Swink was employed at Shamrock General Hospital, Groom Memorial Hospital, Pampa Nursing Home, the Palo Pinto Hospital in Mineral Wells, Methodist Hospital in Lubbock, Shannon Hospital in San Angelo, High Plains Baptist Hospital and the Veterans Administration Hospital in Amarillo. She received many awards throughout her career, including employee of the month several times. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Mrs. Inglis was born in Hereford and moved to Amarillo as a child. In 1940, she graduated from Amarillo High School. She was a beautician for more than 50 years. She was a longtime member of the First Church of the Nazarene where she taught Sunday School for more than 40 years. She was active in the church choir and served as church librarian for more than 10 years. She married Paul M. Inglis in 1961 at Amarillo. Survivors include her husband; a son, Allen L. Wheatley of Irving; two daughters, Betty Allison of Amarillo and Patricia Sherman of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a stepdaughter, Pat Parker of Amarillo; two sisters, Lucy Beth Harland and Rachel Graham, both of Amarillo; and a brother, Clide Amerson of Amarillo. She was born in Shamrock and moved to Amarillo in 1951 from Roscoe. She married Jack Danner in 1951 at Amarillo. He died in 1993. Mr. Dooley was born in Canyon and was a veteran of the Coast Guard. He was a member of First Baptist Church. For 28 years, Mr. Dooley was a manager for Crum & Forster Insurance Co. He was transferred to Harlingen for 15 years then to Corpus Christi where he retired after six years. In 1987, he returned to Canyon. He married Barbara Boswell in Harlingen. He was preceded in death by a son, Bruce Corday, in 1998. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Gary Dooley of Plano, Christopher Corday of Pasadena and Gregory Corday of Canyon; six daughters, Joan Jupe of Canyon, Yvonna Wieck and Ann Wieck, both of Umbarger, Carole Tuma of Celeste, Wynelle Pruchniewski of Dillsburg, Pa., and Kimberley Webb of Fairland, Okla.; three sisters, Viola Robbins of Canyon, Iris Brown of Longmont, Colo., and Ava Wardell of Bellaire; a special friend, Claire Dooley of Canyon; 26 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Willis was born in Clovis and was raised in Grier. He was an Army veteran of Vietnam. He had worked as a manager at Melrose Grain. Amarillo Daily News, Nov. 3, 1999 Glenna Webb Cutler CLOVIS, N.M. - Glenna Webb Cutler, 67, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999. Memorial service will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Burial will be at Springville Cemetery at Springville, Utah. Arrangements are by Steed-Todd Funeral Home. Mrs. Cutler was born in Provo, Utah, and was raised in Springville, Utah. She graduated from Springville High School in 1950. While in high school, she was in the orchestra where she played the viola and in several string groups. She also was active in choir and numerous vocal groups. She performed in high school dramas and operas. She married Harold G. Cutler in 1950 at Salt Lake City. They moved to Clovis in 1979 from England, where her husband was stationed with the Air Force. She was active in the Wives Club and participated in charities and other activities. A lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mrs. Cutler was active as a leader in church youth activities, the Relief Society and Sunday school. She was a chorister and choir leader for many years. She spent the last 10 years as the Eastern New Mexico representative for the LDS Social Services and Adoption Agency. She was preceded in death by a son, Brent, in 1951. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Kim Randall Cutler of Heber City, Utah, and Douglas Glenn Cutler of Santa Fe; three daughters, Elaine Cutler of Bellefonte, Pa., Kristi Armstrong of Clovis and Gail White of Los Lunas; two brothers, Newell Webb of West Yellowstone, Mont., and Melvin Harold Webb of Springville; a sister, Beula Ray Wilson of Huntington Beach, Calif; and 17 grandchildren. Mrs. Walton was born in Huntsville, Ark., and moved to Clovis in 1935. She was a clothing sales clerk and a member of First Church of God. She was preceded in death by three daughters, Gina Dee Walton, Betty Lou Walton and Mary Sue Strabuck.
