Young Roy J. Young, 79, of Amarillo, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Jenkins Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. R.D. Battle, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Memory Garden Cemetery at Canyon by Golden Gate Mortuary, 1416 N. Hughes. Mr. Young was born in Smithville, Okla., and had lived in Amarillo for 54 years. He attended schools in Smithville. He retired in 1975 from Asarco and was a member of Jenkins Chapel Baptist Church. He married Cloteal Knighton in 1988. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Rosemary Carter of Oklahoma City, Okla., Bettye Sue Briggs and Carlotte Randle, both of Amarillo; a brother, Robert Young of El Paso; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Roy Chester Cassell Roy Chester Cassell, 73, of Amarillo, died Monday, March 1, 1999. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in Claude Cemetery at Claude. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, Armstrong Chapel, Claude. Mr. Cassell was born in Pike County, Ky., and moved to Amarillo in 1981. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He worked as a carpenter. Mr. Cassell was a member of the Singles Dance Club, 42 Club, Shriners and was a 32nd degree Mason. Survivors include three daughters, Glenda Gail Ivey of Athens, Janice Alene Cassell of Terrell and Cynthia Ann Griffin of Kaufman; four sisters; a brother; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. She graduated from Kimball High School at Oak Cliff and attended college in Abilene and Albuquerque, N.M. She married Kenneth Eaton in 1973 at Clovis and returned to Amarillo in 1991 from Clovis. She worked at Clovis High Plains Hospital as a cytotechnologist for more than 20 years before working in Amarillo at Amarillo Pathological Associates. Survivors include her husband; a son, Chad Moore of Austin; two daughters, Kristi Harper of Schweinfurt, Germany, and Kasi Eaton of Lubbock; a brother, Wayne Dunlap of Indiana; a sister, Jo Anne Moseley of Dallas; and a grandchild. She was a private-duty licensed vocational nurse for many years working at various hospitals and nursing homes in the Panhandle area. She married James Ayers in 1951 at Shamrock. Survivors include her husband; two sons, James Ayers Jr. of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Chapaula Ayers of Amarillo; three sisters, Mary McAllister of Dumas, Frances Treat of Pampa and Rita Moser of Longview; two brothers, Gene Chapman of Ore City and Larry Chapman of Pampa; and a granddaughter. Hilmer Lee Harrison Hilmer Lee Harrison, 65, of Amarillo, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999. No services are planned. Arrangements are by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40. Mr. Harrison was born in Tulia. He graduated from Claude High School at Claude. He served in the Air Force with tours of duty in Okinawa during the Korean War. He had worked as an air traffic controller at San Antonio and also as a supervisor in the photo processing field for many years. He did volunteer work for the Amarillo Senior Aid Programs in various nonprofit organizations. Survivors include a special friend, Harold Hawkey of Amarillo. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Poindexter was born in Wellsville, N.Y. She retired as a court reporter in the Virginia and Washington, D.C., areas. She was a member of Prairie View Chapel. Survivors include a son, Rob L. Sims of Amarillo; a daughter, Leone Marqurite Plummer of Amarillo; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Salvation Army or Baptist St. Anthony Hospice and Life Enrichment Center. Paul Webster Shaw Paul Webster Shaw, 62, of Amarillo, died Monday, March 1, 1999. The family plans private services. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mr. Shaw was born in Ashland, Ohio. He joined the Army after high school and served as a cryptologist. He was stationed in Japan where he climbed Mount Fuji. After three years in the Army, Mr. Shaw joined the Central Intelligence Agency where he was stationed in Africa. In 1971, he returned to the United States and moved to California where he owned the White Eyes Indian Shop. In 1993, he moved to Amarillo where he was employed by Venture Stores and Kmart. He is survived by a sister, Miriam Porter of Smyrna, Del. The body will not be available for viewing. Azzora Ann Lemons Azzora Ann Lemons, 73, of Amarillo, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999. Georgia St. Mrs. Lemons was born in Independence, Kan., and moved to Amarillo 10 years ago from Kroll. She was a homemaker and a Catholic. She married Woodrow "Woody" Lemons who died in 1979. She is survived by a sister, Ruth Martin of Amarillo. Oklahoma Lucile Smith GUYMON, Okla. - Lucile Smith, 87, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Panhandle Centenary United Methodist Church in Goodwell with the Rev. Greg Keith, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Goodwell Cemetery by Henson-Novak Funeral Directors of Guymon. A lifelong resident of Texas County, Mrs. Smith was born in Goodwell where she attended public schools. She was a member of Panhandle Centenary United Methodist Church. A homemaker, she moved to Guymon in 1991. She married Mike Smith in 1927 in Goodwell. He died in 1975. Survivors include a niece, Patty Beck of Carnegie; and a nephew, Jay Smith of White Deer, Texas. The family will be at the homes of Mrs. Betty Bryan, 123 N. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery in Amarillo with military rites. Mr. Sanders was born in Littlefield and moved to Lubbock in 1958. He worked for Furr's for 35 years, retiring in 1987. He was a veteran of the 4th Marine Division during World War II serving in the Saipan, Marshall Island, Tinan and Iwo Jima campaigns. He was a past member of the Hub City Wheels. He married Jackie Pieratt in 1948 at Amarillo. She died in 1996. Survivors include two sons, Larry D. Sanders of Falls Church, Va., and Sandy L. Mr. Sossaman was born in Lazarr and moved to Deaf Smith County from Paducah in 1970. He was an Army veteran and was employed in commercial trucking. He was a Baptist. He married Cordia Hankins in 1973 at Hereford. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Mike Sossaman of Dublin, Ga., and Bruce Sossaman of Hereford; a stepson, John Smith of Corsicana; two daughters, Cynthia Rochelle of Grapevine and Carol Augusto of Hammond, La.; a sister, Bonnie Barnes of Fort Worth; a brother, John L. Risner WHEELER - Dorothy J. Risner, 71, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999. Services were at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Toby Henson, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Wheeler Cemetery by Wright Funeral Home. Mrs. Risner was born in Floydada, and had been a Wheeler resident since 1948. She worked for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee Office for 33 years, retiring in 1982. She then served as secretary of First Baptist Church in Wheeler for eight years, retiring in 1990. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was a youth Sunday school teacher for 40 years and was a member of the choir. She married Adrian Risner in 1954 at Wheeler. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Darla Childress of Tuttle, Okla.; a sister, Frances Dixon of Matador; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. The family requests memorials be to First Baptist Church of Wheeler or the American Cancer Society. John Porter Fowler MEMPHIS - John Porter Fowler, 82, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999. Mr. Fowler was born in Hall County where he had lived most of his life. He was a farmer and a member of First Baptist Church. He and Ida Sue Davis Fowler had been married for 51 years. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Jane Young of South Lake; a brother, Carroll Fowler of Lakeview; a sister, Sally Stone of Amarillo; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Bozeman, 83, died Thursday, March 4, 1999. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Ulrey officiating. Burial will be in Ochiltree Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home. Mrs. Bozeman was born in Lubbock County and moved to Perryton in 1925 from Roberts County. She lived most of her adult life in Tulia and then returned to Perryton. Mrs. Bozeman taught art for 20 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Perryton. She was preceded in death by a son, Melvin. Survivors include five sons, George L. Bozeman Jr., of Deerfield, N.H., Harvey Bozeman of Tulia and Kenneth Bozeman, Clem J. Burial will be in Friona by Ellis-Blackwell Funeral Home of Friona. Mrs. Talley was born in Carlsbad, N.M. She received her bachelor's degree from New Mexico State University and her master's degree from Kansas State University. In 1963, she moved to Friona from Anchorage, Alaska. Mrs. Talley was a junior high English teacher with the Friona Independent School District. She was a member of TSTA, NEA and Sixth Street Church of Christ. She married Leon Talley in 1963 at Carlsbad. Survivors include her husband; three sons, Tracy Talley of Norman, Okla., Troy Talley of Lubbock and Terron Talley of Oklahoma City; her father, Harley Davis of Friona; a brother, Jimmy Davis of Carlsbad; a sister, Linda Blair of Anchorage; and four grandchildren. Billy Montgomery DUMAS - Billy Montgomery, 73, died Thursday, March 4, 1999. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Dumas Cemetery with the Rev. Scott Willingham, pastor of First Baptist Church of Dumas, officiating. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors. Mr. Montgomery was born in Joshua and had lived in Dumas since 1989. A longtime resident of Fort Worth, he was retired from the Air Force. He was employed as an electronics technician for the U.S. government and a member of the American Legion Post No. 224 of Dumas. He married Drussella "Dru" Foster in 1978. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Carol Jean Kyno of Houston; three sons, Dennis Montgomery of Lott, Monty Montgomery of Chilton and Ricky Montgomery of Little River; and seven grandchildren. Burial will be in West Park Cemetery by GilillandWatson Funeral Home. Mr. Torbit was born in Hidalgo, Ill. He was a carpenter and a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He married Guin Tackett in 1946 at Raton, N.M. She died in 1978. Survivors include four sons, Gerald Torbit of Pueblo, Colo., John Arthur Torbit of Camarillo, Calif., Bill Torbit of Arizona and Pat Torbit of Tulia; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Jackie Miller Smith CHILDRESS - Jackie Miller Smith, 61, died Thursday, March 4, 1999. Services will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Childress Church of Christ with Doyle Wells of Lake Charles, La., Bill Mayes of the church, Charley Johnston, coach of Childress, and Dr. W.D. Green of Childress officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home. Mr. Smith was born and raised in Childress where he graduated from high school in 1955. From 1956 until 1958, he served as a medic in the Army. After graduation from Texas Tech University in 1967, he returned to Childress as a teacher and coach. Mr. Smith's career included being defensive coordinator for Bobcat football, head track coach, golf and basketball coach, history teacher, driver education instructor and Little League coordinator. He was recognized by Texas High School Coaches Association in 1997 for accomplishments in coaching track, named Employee of the Year in 1979 and Teacher of the Year in 1998. In 1998, Mr. Smith retired from Childress Independent School District. He was a member of Childress Church of Christ where he was a deacon and Bible teacher. He married Charlene Riddell of Cee Vee in 1961. Survivors include his wife; a son, Terry Smith of Tomball; two daughters, Tammy Stegall of Lake Jackson and Amber Smith of Lubbock; three sisters, Syd Cosby of Coleman and Judy Johnson and Pat Swindell, both of Childress; and two grandsons. Bill R. Clark DIMMITT - Bill R. Clark, 72, of Lubbock, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rusty Dickerson of the church, the Rev. Vernon O'Kelley of Amarillo and the Rev. Jesse Hodge of First United Methodist Church of Levelland officiating. Burial will b in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery by Foskey-Lilley-McGill Funeral Home of Dimmitt. Mr. Clark was born in Chillicothe and attended King High School before graduating from high school in Chillicothe. In 1971, he moved to Dimmitt from Lubbock and returned to Lubbock in 1998. He graduated from Texas A&M University with a bachelor's degree in agriculture economics. During World War II, Mr. Clark served in the Navy aboard the USS Marquett as a radar operator. For 12 years, he was a manager of Hale Center Wheat Growers. He worked with West Texas Feed Mill in Roscoe in 1968. Mr. Clark was named Citizen of the Year in Hale Center in 1967. He was awarded Cooperator of the Year in 1982. In 1970, Mr. Clark worked with Houston Bank for cooperatives in Lubbock. He became manager and chief executive officer of Dimmitt Agriculture Industries from 1971 until his retirement in 1993. Until 1998, he served as consultant to DAI. Since 1971, Mr. Clark had been a member of First United Methodist Church where he was past chairman of the administrative board. He also was a member of the Lions Club and the Masonic Lodge. He served on the board of the Plains Memorial Hospital in Dimmitt where he was secretary for one year and president from 1995 until 1998. He married Deanne Haggard Harris in 1971 at Lubbock. His first marriage was to Joyce Burch at Davidson, Okla. He was preceded in death by his first wife in 1969 and by a son, Ray Clark, in 1955. Survivors include two sons, Greg Clark of Sanger and Jimmy Harris of Arlington; a daughter, Tonya Brewer of Wilmette, Ill.; three sisters, Jo Ann Zastoupil of Richardson, Doris Jones of Greenville and Lorraine Maynor of Wichita Falls; four brothers, Sidney Clark of Big Spring, Wayne Clark of Oklahoma City, Sterling Clark of Quanah and Gerald Clark of Beaumont; and six grandchildren. Mr. Luna was born and raised in Muleshoe and moved to Littlefield in 1998. He was a brick layer and member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Carl Reeve Schlenker FRIONA - Carl Reeve Schlenker, 80, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Union Congregational Church. Burial will be in Friona Cemetery by Ellis-Blackwell Funeral Home. Mr. Schlenker was born in Parmer County where he was a lifetime resident. He farmed in Rhea community and was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Friona. He served on the Parmer County Community Hospital board and Prairie Acres Nursing Home board for many years. In 1960, Mr. Schlenker was named Outstanding Farmer by the Parmer County Soil Conservation District. He was a former president of the Plains Gas Users Association and former director of the Friona Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He married Velma Schueler in 1946 at Rhea community. Survivors include his wife; two sons, James Noel Schlenker of Anaco, Venezuela and Ira Floyd Schlenker of Friona; two daughters, Connie Lynn Johnson of Friona and Carleen Kay Sims of Lubbock; two sisters, Sarah Dean of Friona and Amelia Rankin of Claremont, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens by Lemons Funeral Home of Plainview. Mrs. Barnett was born in Roby and grew up in Rotan where she graduated from high school. She attended Mary Hardin Baylor and then moved to Vernon. In 1956, she moved to Plainview. Mrs. Barnett was a member of First Baptist Church where she was Sunday school superintendent for the Beginners Department and taught the Adult 4 Sunday School Class for many years. She was a member of the Plainview Duplicate Club and the ACBL. In 1997, she moved to Lubbock. She married Hollis Barnett in 1982 at Plainview. He died in 1992. Survivors include a daughter, Pat Ellison of Lubbock; a brother, Grady Bridges of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sisters, Edith Smith of Plainview and Jewell Bridges of Seattle; a grandson; and two great-granddaughters. Lena Mae Ford SPEARMAN - Lena Mae Ford, 74, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Scott Curry officiating. Burial will be in Gruver Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman. Born in Chico, Mrs. Ford moved to Spearman 58 years ago from Newcastle. She was a homemaker and member of Eastern Star and First Baptist Church. She married George Ford in 1943 at Newcastle. He died in 1982. Survivors include two sons, Freddie Ford of Round Rock and Teddy Ford of Perryton; a daughter, Flora Mae Campbell of Perryton; three brothers, Roy Byrd of Gruver, Billy Joe Byrd of Portales, N.M., and Herman Byrd of San Antonio; a sister, Frances Cearley of Gruver; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Ninth and Columbia Street Church of Christ, Edmonson Northwest Home Demonstration Club and a life member of Parent-Teacher Association. She was a homemaker and active in 4-H. She married Elmo O. Snelling in 1940 at Hollis. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Guy Snelling of Edmonson and Wayne Snelling of Plainview; two daughters, Jean Courtney of Allen and Dela Kellner of Blanchard, Okla.; four sisters, Margurette Spradlin of Clovis, N.M., Wanda Lentz of Neosho, Mo.; Vernell Seals of Bartlesville, Okla., and Vada Jo Choate of Ada, Okla.; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. New Mexico Davies St. Clair CLOVIS, N.M. - Davies "Dave" St. Clair, 85, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999. Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in The Chapel, 1500 N. Thornton with the Rev. N. Scott King and the Rev. Bob Williams officiating. Burial will be in Mission Garden of Memories Cemetery by Muffley Funeral Home. Mr. St. Clair was born near Brownwood, Texas. He graduated from Brownwood High School and received a bachelor of arts degree in 1936 from Howard Payne University and a master of arts degree in education and administration from Northern Colorado University. He moved to Clovis in 1936 to teach in the then newly completed Clovis Junior High School. He taught seventh-grade social studies until 1942, when his teaching career was interrupted by four years of military service with the radar division of the Signal Corps assigned to the 13th Air Force in the Pacific. After his discharge in 1946, Mr. St. Clair returned to Clovis Junior High School. In the fall of the same year, he became principal of James Bickley Elementary School. From 1950 to 1956, he was principal of Clovis High School. He returned to James Bickley Elementary School in the fall of 1956 and served as principal until retiring in 1979. Mr. St. Clair served on the board of Retirement Ranch from its beginning in 1961 and became chairman of the board of Retirement Ranches of New Mexico in 1974. When the Senior Citizens Center opened in 1990, he became chairman of the board of directors. He was a member of the board of deacons and of the Session of the First Presbyterian Church and also was a member of various educational organizations. He married Ruby Witherspoon in 1942 at Clovis. He is survived by his wife, Ruby. The family requests memorials be to Senior Citizens Resident Center or a favorite charity. Eddie R. Hutto CLOVIS, N.M. - Eddie R. Hutto, 70, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. CST today in First Baptist Church at Bovina, Texas, with the Rev. Gary Morgan and Cecil Bunch officiating. Burial will be in Bovina Cemetery by Steed-Todd Funeral Home. Mr. Hutto was born in Ralls, Texas, and moved to Clovis in 1974 from Bovina. He was an Air Force veteran. While living in Bovina, he was in the fertilizer business and after moving to Clovis, he worked in car sales. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Bovina. Survivors include his wife, Alta; five daughters, Roxanne Burnett and Tammy Wilhite, both of Amarillo, Beth Waddell of Houston, Texas, Twyla Lusk of Farwell, Texas, and Nancy Ormon of Denver; a son, Buddy Hutto of Levelland, Texas; a brother, Spurgeon Hutto of Dimmitt; a sister, LaFurne Harris of Odessa, Texas; 15 grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren. J. Wesley Shipman CLOVIS, N.M. - J. Wesley Shipman, 85, died Thursday, March 4, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Steed-Todd Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Bader officiating. Burial will be in Mission Garden of Memories. Mr. Shipman was born in Tulia, Texas. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Men's Bible Class, Eastern Star - Keystone Chapter No. 27 and was past master of Clovis Masonic Lodge No. 40 AF&AM. He married Virginia McGregor in 1936 at Portales. Survivors include his wife; a son, Don Shipman of Washington D.C.; a daughter, Gale Freeman of Topeka, Kan.; two granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren.
